You’re not alone! ☺☺ PAGE 02 Monthly Newsletter Hello! May 2020 PAGE 03 Monthly Newsletter A note from the Editor May 2020 The merry month of May with her glorious Spring weather has passed and we are already blowing into June quite steadily. I think we’ve all been making the most of the UK’s sunniest month on record, as the GRR social media pages are stocked with photos of tanned, smiling club members. Just beautiful! As soon as we were getting almost used to living with the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, some of these measures have recently been relaxed and we are able to meet up in small groups for a social distance run or chat. Happy days are nearly here again! Our club committee members have kept us motivated during May with several Challenges. I’ve included coverage of a lockdown challenges in this newsletter, so let’s jump in straight away. Personally, I have always found an intelligent challenge is a winner. We therefore kick off with Dave Kitching’s Acrostic Challenge which offered a time for reflection and brain training. His challenge was straight forward: create an Acrostic on what running means to you. There are excellent examples on running, the club and even life thoughts. See for yourself. Thank you Dave, for this quick-witted contribution. I particularly enjoyed following the COVID-19 challenge which was set by our charismatic chairman. Most of you were very innovative and dedicated with this challenge. I thought Tom Reader’s attempt was the easiest to convert to an article and you can read the“ diary style” article– doodles included – which I put together, a bit further in. You will also be able to follow a snapshot of a couple of the other attempts at this challenge. There were too many to include them all, and obviously the video attempts cannot be included – some of those were excellent! Do however revisit the Facebook page – Ben’s “big 19” energetic effort is well worth a watch. A few you went Disc Hunting. This colourful, competitive challenge was set by our chairman and it was all about the Hunt! If you missed the challenge, here’s a quick outline of it: 26 yellow and blue discs (club approved shades) were hidden throughout the local area, during challenge week. Not-so-straightforward clues were provided in order for you to locate the discs. More straightforward was that discs were lettered A to X along with two “special” GRR Discs. This challenge fired off on 25/05/2020 and the final hunt took place on 31/05/2020. The feedback on the Facebook page was overwhelmingly positive and it gave most of the participants an opportunity to introduce more cycling and walking to their days. May was Motivation month. Karen Harding enjoyed a phenomenally motivational May and she shares her journey with us. Well done on smashing all the goals you set for yourself Karen! We are again very fortunate to be introduced to an elite athlete. I don’t think many other people have the opportunity to learn about the “everyday life” side of this athlete in the way we have, through Ben’s exclusive interview. Thank you, Ben! Can you remember what the club newsletter looked like in May 1999? Dave Croft kindly sent me a copy , and you can view it a little further on . Knowing how much we all miss the results section, I have also included the time trial results from May 2010, just for fun (or as a comparison to see how 10 years may have affected your athleticism, if your name features in those results). PAGE 04 Monthly Newsletter A note from the Editor May 2020 May for Miranda was a “close but no banana” month. I didn’t achieve all the running goals I set for myself and this was a huge disappointment. With the benefit of hindsight, being unrealistic about the time I would have available for running when setting my target, whilst work was at a peak, was really not a clever move! Moving on. The most important thing I’m taking from May is that running remains to be a privilege which is accessible to all. As such, here is my attempt at an acrostic poem, which is also the mantra which kept me going when I felt I can’t : Invigorating as I’d like it to be, Coincidentally, as a cloak in Averting feelings of Negativity. Running regularly becomes an Utilitarian Necessity. I really miss Mr Kirby’s regular column, don’t you? A very speedy and successful recovery, Dave! May the new month be exceptionally good to all of you.
