  • Sporting Legends: Seve Ballesteros
SPORTING LEGENDS: SEVE BALLESTEROS SPORT: GOLF COMPETITIVE ERA: 1974 - 2008 Severiano "Seve" Ballesteros (born 9 April 1957 in Pedreña, Spain) is a Spanish golfer who was one of the sport's leading figures in the 1980s and 1990s. Ballesteros turned professional in March 1974 at the age of 16. In 1976, he burst onto the international scene with a second-place finish in The Open Championship; he went on to win the European Tour Order of Merit (money title) that year, and repeated his Order of Merit win the following two years. He would go on to win the Order of Merit six times, a record at that time (since surpassed by Colin Montgomerie). Ballesteros went on to win five major championships: The Masters: 1980, 1983 His 1980 win was the first at Augusta by a European player. The Open Championship: 1979, 1984, 1988. He was also a great at match play; he won the World Match Play Championship five times, and was a mainstay of the European Ryder Cup team for much of the 1980s and 1990s. He scored 20 points out of 37 matches against the United States; his partnership with José María Olazábal was one of the most successful in the history of the competition, with 11 wins and two halved matches out of 15 pairs matches. While Ballesteros was a member of European sides that won the Ryder Cup in 1985, retained the Cup in 1987 and 1989, and regained the Cup in 1995, the pinnacle of his career in the competition came in 1997, when he captained the winning European side at Valderrama Golf Club in Sotogrande, Spain.

  • Final Report: Published Version Developing the Impact of Sports Tourism in the East Midlands November 2005
Final Report: Published Version Developing the Impact of Sports Tourism in the East Midlands November 2005 Developing the Impact of Sports Tourism in the East Midlands 2 Foreword by Jeff Moore, Chief Executive, East Midlands Development Agency Sport inspires us all and raises the aspirations of our nation to succeed. The national euphoria which greeted our successful bid for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games shows just how deeply sport touches so many of us. But sport is more than a leisure pursuit – it is an industry. A very big and very successful industry. A big part of that industry is sports tourism. Here in the East Midlands we have world class sport stars, world class facilities and events that are the envy of many nations in the world let alone other regions in the UK. The question is “do we truly appreciate what we have, and do we know what goals we must work towards to maximise the benefits for the East Midlands?” Do we truly understand the way sport enriches our lives, not only through participation and support for our favourite teams and players, but the economic benefits it brings through trade and tourism and the contribution it can make to the skills of our people and to the regeneration of our communities? This report shows just how much we already owe to sport tourism and how much more we can benefit – economically and socially – if we dedicate effort and resources to making the most of what we have, and to strengthening our region further in sport and its associated benefits.

  • The Lta Wild Card Policy
THE LTA WILD CARD POLICY 1. INTRODUCTION A ‘wild card’ is a player included in the draw of a tennis event at the discretion of the tournament’s organising committee or organisation. Both main draw and qualifying wild cards may be made available at events. Because the LTA runs and organises some tournaments (LTA Staged Tournaments), the LTA is able to allocate wild cards in the draws of the events within those tournaments. This policy is a general policy that explains how the LTA chooses the players which receive those wild cards and how the LTA nominates individuals to receive wild cards for The Junior Championships, Wimbledon from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club Limited (the AELTC). The number of wild cards that are available to the LTA at ITF World Tennis Tour (Men’s & Women’s), ATP and WTA tour level events held in Great Britain is outlined in appendix 1. Specific Tournaments and Events If you would like to learn about a particular tournament or event, you should read the relevant tournament information. For LTA tournaments, you can find tournament-specific information packs in the competition resources area of the LTA website. 2. WHAT THIS POLICY EXPLAINS This policy (the Policy) explains how the LTA will allocate wild cards for LTA Staged Tournaments and how the LTA chooses the individuals who they will nominate to the AELTC to receive wildcards for The Junior Championships, Wimbledon. Where references are made to allocating wildcards in this Policy, in relation to The Junior Championships, Wimbledon, such references shall mean nominating individuals for wildcards.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE IDENTIFYING OPTIMAL TENNIS BETTING PORTFOLIOS BASED ON VARYING RISK TOLERANCES OF BETTORS NIMAY GODBOLE SPRING 2020 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Finance with honors in Finance Reviewed and approved* by the following: Dr. Robert Novack Associate Professor of Business Logistics Thesis Supervisor Dr. Brian Davis Clinical Assistant Professor of Finance Honors Adviser * Electronic approvals are on file. i ABSTRACT This thesis assesses the risk versus return relationship in tennis betting among the different tournaments that exist within the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour, the main men’s tennis governing body. To do so, betting data is gathered from a website well-known for this data collection, http://www.tennis-data.co.uk/. The purpose of this thesis is to identify optimal betting portfolios for bettors with varying levels of risk aversion. Expected returns and standard deviations of Grand Slam, Masters 1000, ATP 500, and ATP 250 tournaments were analyzed to create an optimal risky portfolio using Markowtiz’s Portfolio Theory. Once that was created, optimal betting portfolios were created by betting a portion of the money in the tennis betting market and investing the rest in Vanguard’s Prime Money Market Fund, VMMXX. The key finding is significant; at a risk aversion level of A = 4, the portfolio yields a return of 11.02 percent and a standard deviation of 15.02 percent, which is a higher return and lower standard deviation than the historical average of the S&P 500.
