May 2020 PAGE 03 Monthly Newsletter A note from the Editor May 2020 The merry month of May with her glorious Spring weather has passed and we are already blowing into June quite steadily. I think we’ve all been making the most of the UK’s sunniest month on record, as the GRR social media pages are stocked with photos of tanned, smiling club members. Just beautiful! As soon as we were getting almost used to living with the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, some of these measures have recently been relaxed and we are able to meet up in small groups for a social distance run or chat. Happy days are nearly here again! Our club committee members have kept us motivated during May with several Challenges. I’ve included coverage of a lockdown challenges in this newsletter, so let’s jump in straight away. Personally, I have always found an intelligent challenge is a winner. We therefore kick off with Dave Kitching’s Acrostic Challenge which offered a time for reflection and brain training.

  • Great South Run History
Great South Run History The Great South Run is Europe’s most popular 10 mile race and started life in Southampton back in 1990 before moving just a few miles along the M27 motorway to the neighbouring city of Portsmouth 12 months later. The fast and flat 10 mile route takes in the iconic sites of the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard including Portsmouth Cathedral, Spinnaker Tower and the HMS Victory- which plays host to the HM Band of Royal Marines, who perform for passing runners. The final flat stretch along the sea front has given thousands of people the opportunity to get a personal best time for more than twenty years. Every year the event attracts a plethora of athletes, celebrities and runners raising money for good causes, with over £30 million having been raised for charity over the years. The Great South Run has grown into a great weekend of running in the popular seaside location, along with the Junior & Mini Great South Run and the introduction of the Great South Run 5k in 2011. Dutchman Marti ten Kate was the winner of the inaugural 10-mile event in 47 minutes 52 seconds while Alison Gooderham, who surprised herself with a fast clocking of 56min 09sec, was the women’s winner. The Diet Coke Great South Run (as it was then known), relocated to the present course in 1991. Prison officer Thomas Naali from Tanzania escaped from the field to take first place while Olga Bondarenko, the reigning Olympic 10000m champion from Russia, clinched a star-studded women's race.

  • THE HISTORY of the GREAT NORTH RUN the Morrisons Great North Run Is
THE HISTORY OF THE GREAT NORTH RUN The Morrisons Great North Run is the premier event in the Great Run series and is firmly established as the world’s most popular half marathon. 1981 Less than 5000 runners were expected to take part in the inaugural race – held on Sunday June 28 – therefore organisers were astounded when over 12500 applied and over 10000 of them completed the first Great North Run. Winner of the half marathon, from Newcastle to South Shields, was local international Mike McLeod. Three years before he won the Olympic 10 000m silver medal, the Elswick Harrier crossed the line in 63 minutes 23 seconds. The local police estimated over 200000 spectators lined the route as he beat Norway’s Oyvind Dahl by the huge margin of 1 minute 11 seconds. Former South Shields Harrier, Karen Goldhawk of the Royal Air Force, made it a great day for North East athletics by winning the Women’s race in 77 minutes 36 seconds. 1982 After the brilliant success of the previous year, more than 50000 fun runners applied for 20000 available places. Producing another great run, Mike McLeod won in 62 minutes 44 seconds, the fastest time ever achieved for a half marathon in Great Britain. The first woman across the line was London Olympiad’s Margaret Lockley, who clocked 77 minutes 43 seconds. 1983 A year before winning the Olympic marathon title, Carlos Lopez became the first overseas winner of the Great North Run. The Portugese athlete ran in 62 minutes 46 seconds, beating British schoolteacher Ray Smedley, who finished in 64 minutes 34 seconds.
