With each passing day, we rely ever more on tech- nology for communication, healthcare, transportation, and a plethora of other tasks vital to everyday life. But, despite the magnificent accomplishments made by science, there is still a gap between what science can theoretically accomplish and what society at large is able to understand. This barrier between scien- tific knowledge and popular understanding is primarily a result of inadequate communication and is the inspiration behind Reuleaux. Reuleaux, the Mines undergraduate research journal, aims to bridge this gap between society and science through championing the importance of effective, understandable scientific communication backed up by sound scientific methodology and experimentation. With this in mind, Reuleaux has been developed as a platform for undergraduate researchers at the Colorado School of Mines to engage with the full process of peer review and publication as carried out by the likes of Science, Nature, and many other professional scientific journals. Unlike other scientific journals, however, Reuleaux works alongside its authors to help develop scientific manuscripts that exhibit professionalism, clarity, and impactfulness in language. Additionally, Reuleaux helps guide its authors through a fully-fledged peer review process so as to foster a learning envi- ronment that dispels common fears and misconceptions surrounding the scientific publication process. It is the mission of Reuleaux to help any aspirational author realize their goal of publication in a legitimate research journal with the confidence of knowing that they have produced a novel and professional contri- bution to the scientific community. The format of Reuleaux also aims to break down conventional barriers surrounding scientific com- munication. Reuleaux encourages engagement between its readers and authors by using especially quali- fied manuscripts as a platform for learning. By providing brief analyses of articles, outlining why they are particularly exemplary, Reuleaux hopes to encourage a greater understanding of what the process of sci- entific publication demands. It is the ultimate goal to make everyone on the Mines campus feel as though they could themselves be an active and informed connoisseur of knowledge. With this in mind, please take time to enjoy the inaugural publication of Reuleaux: a true showcase of the increible undergraduate research occurring at the Colorado School of Mines. The Demons of Los Alamos Sydney Marchando is a sophomore pursuing a chemical engi- neering degree with minors in biomedical engineering and public affairs. She has participated in past research with a dermatology lab studying skin cancer. She has always been passionate about histo- ry, however, and has wanted to investigate research questions in this discipline. She chose to research more about the history of science, important scientists, and the implications of their work in order to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying moral issues present in scientific improvement. As an engineering student with the hopes of later pursuing research in her career, Sydney has found it important to understand the dilemmas that scientists face on a day to day basis. She intends to use this insight to better conduct research in a way that is beneficial to both society and the scientist. The Demons of Los Alamos Sydney Marchando Most people are aware of the Manhattan Project: the massive, top-secret rush to develop nu- clear weapons at the close of World War II. Some may even be familiar with lead physicists such as Enrico Fermi and Robert Oppenheimer. Howev- er, little is known about the 120,000 others who worked on the project [1]. The story of Louis Slotin and the Demon Core, for example, is one narrative from the Manhattan Project that has only just re- emerged. Recently, enough information from a va- riety of sources has allowed a more detailed picture of Louis Slotin to develop, highlighting not only his contributions to the Manhattan Project but also his character and the human faults that led to his fatal accident. Understanding Slotin provides a window into a fascinating period of scientific discovery that has largely remained shrouded in mystery. The term is generally used to refer to acute problems caused by a large dosage of radiation in a short period, though this also has occurred with long term exposure. The clinical name for radiation sickness is acute radiation syndrome ( ARS ) as described by the CDC .[1][2][3] A chronic radiation syndrome does exist but is very uncommon; this has been observed among workers in early radium source production sites and in the early days of the Soviet nuclear program. A short exposure can result in acute radiation syndrome; chronic radiation syndrome requires a prolonged high level of exposure. Radiation exposure can also increase the probability of contracting some other diseases, mainly cancer , tumours , and genetic damage . These are referred to as the stochastic effects of radiation, and are not included in the term radiation sickness. The use of radionuclides in science and industry is strictly regulated in most countries (in the U.S. by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission ). In the event of an accidental or deliberate release of radioactive material, either evacuation or sheltering in place are the recommended measures. Radiation sickness is generally associated with acute (a single large) exposure. [4][5] Nausea and vomiting are usually the main symptoms. [5] The amount of time between exposure to radiation and the onset of the initial symptoms may be an indicator of how much radiation was absorbed. [5] Symptoms appear sooner with higher doses of exposure.

Operated as the Atomic Energy Detection System by a covert Air Force unit known as AFOAT-1, the AEDS detected emissions and analyzed fallout from Soviet nuclear tests, as well as provided quantitative intelligence on the size of the Russian nuclear stockpile. Virtually unknown because the only greater Cold War secret than nuclear weapons was intelligence gathered about them, data on the Soviet threat produced by AFOAT-1 was an extraordinary influence on early National Intelligence Estimates, the rapid growth of the Strategic Air Command, and strategic war plans. Official guidance beginning with the first nuclear test in 1945 otherwise suggested fallout was an insignificant effect of nuclear weapons. Following AFOAT-1’s detection of Soviet testing in fall 1949 and against the cautions raised about the problematic nature of higher yield weapons by the General Advisory Committee, the Atomic Energy Commission’s top scientific advisers, President Harry Truman ordered the AEC to quickly build these extraordinarily powerful weapons, testing the first in secrecy in November 1952.

All Rights Reserved. “Tickling the sleeping dragon’s tail” is a metaphor for risking severe consequences by taking an unnecessary provocative action. Its origin can be traced to the last year of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in 1946. When investigating the critical mass of plutonium, LANL scientists usually brought two halves of a beryllium reflecting shell surrounding a fissile core closer together, observing the increase in reaction rate via a scintillation counter. They manually forced the two half-shells closer together by gripping them through a thumbhole at the top, while as a safety precaution, keeping the shells from completely closing by inserting shims. However, the habit of Louis Slotin was to remove the shims and keep the shells separated by manually inserting a screwdriver. Enrico Fermi is reported to have warned Slotin and others that they would be “dead within a year” if they continued this procedure. One day the screwdriver slipped, allowing the two half-shells to completely close, and the increased reflectivity drove the core toward criticality. Slotin immediately flipped the top half-shell loose with a flick of the screwdriver, but by then he had endured
