this ancient tradition has been all but comple- tely destroyed. Today, where can you actually go to discover authentic Chinese culture?

Surprising at is may seem, the answer is not China. In order to restore and revive Chinese tradi- tional culture, a group of overseas Chinese ar- tists established Shen Yun in New York in 2006. By 2009, Shen Yun had already grown to three full performance troupes and orchestras that tour simultaneously. Today, Shen Yun counts many winners of international dance and vo- cal competitions among its artists, and the or- chestras include many musicians from world- renowned symphonies and conservatories. After more than 60 years of Communist rule in China, and especially after the Cultu- ral Revolution of the 1960s and 70s, Chinese traditional culture has been all but completely demolished. However, the deeper spiritual core of the ancient culture, with its values of bene- volence, honor, propriety, wisdom, and piety, cannot be destroyed. Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese traditional culture, and by all ac- counts, they’re succeeding.

Timeless art At the core of Shen Yun performances is classical Chinese dance, an age-old art form complete with its own system of training and movements. Dynasty after dynasty, it was pas- sed down among the people, in imperial pala- ces, and ancient plays.
