Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed. -

The information is based on a survey tour conducted during October 11-13, 2015. Around 0 the Palkot three sites were selected for the collection. Two sites were selected on Gobarsilli (22 53.058N, 0 0 0 Jalil Ahmad 084 39.229E), and one site was selected on Kura Pahar (22 51.621 N, 084 38.123 E).The collection Zoological Survey of India, survey and identification yielded a total of 89 species of Lepidoptera including 30 species of Butterflies Gangetic Plains Regional Centre, under 26 genera and 59 species of Moths under 42 genera. As far as Butterflies are concerned, Sector-8, Bahadurpur Housing Nymphalidae with 64% of total reported Butterflies dominated the group whereas, in moths, Erebidae Colony, Patna-800 026, Bihar, dominated with 73% of the collected moth species. Lödl Abstract A comparative morphological study of the wing base sclerites in the family Noctuidae resulted in recognizing remarkable differences in the posterior notal wing process. The morphology of the wing base and its sclerites was investigated with representatives of the Noctuidae subfamilies Calpinae, Catocalinae, Cocytiinae, Hypeninae, Herminiinae and Plusiinae using light microscopic methods. The composition of the complex system of notal processes, axillary sclerites and median plates was investigated briefly. Particular attention was paid to the morphological differences in the posterior notal wing process which tumed out to be of taxonomic importance on specific as well as on higher taxonomic level. Taxonomic important features are found particularly in the lateral branch of the posterior notal wing process, its proportion within the central membrane and the proportion of the basal plate with its bending cuticle on the base of the posterior notal wing process. The variability of the posterior notal wing process is illustrated. A first step is made into the morphometric analysis of taxonmoic valuable and morphologically stable characters on the posterior notal wing process. Zusammenfassung Die vergleichende Morphologie der Flügcibascn und ihrer Sklcritc innerhalb der Familie Noctuidae ergibt merkbare Unterschiede besonders in der Ausgestaltung des "posterior notal wing process" Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Flügelbasen mit ihren Skleriten innerhalb der Familie Noctuidae anhand von Arten der Unterfamilien Calpinae, Catocalinae, Cocytiinae, Hypeninae, Herminiinae und Plusiinae. -

THE EMPEROR MOTHS OF EASTERN AFRICA By E. C. G. Pinhey. (The National Museum, Bulawayo.) The purpose of this article on Emperor Moths is to introduce people, in East and Central Africa, to this spectacular family and to give them some means of identifying the species. It is unfortunate that we cannot afford colour plates. Mr. Bally has aided in the production of half-tone photo• graphs, which should help considerably in the recognition of species, if not with the same facility as with colour plates. There is, of course, available, at a price, volume XIV of Seitz' Macrole• pidoptera, which includes coloured illustrations of most of the African Emperors. In tropical countries Emperor Moths and Hawk Moths are the most popular families of the moths among amateurs, the former largely for their size and colourfulness, the latter more perhaps for their streamlined elegance and rapidity of flight. Furthermore, compared to some other families, both these groups are reasonably small in number of species and, despite their bulk, they can be incorporated in a moderately limited space if not too many examples of each species are retained. Admittedly some of the larger Emperors take up a disproportionate amount of room and it is advisable to make them overlap in the collection. If we consider, however, that the amateur is concentrating on this family to the exclusion of other moth groups, the position is not too alarming. There are somewhat over a hundred species of Emperors in East Africa. What are Emperor Moths? Some people call them Silk moths, because the caterpillars of some species spin silk cocoons. -

Die Veranlassung zur vorliegenden Arbeit gab mir die Acquisition einer von dem Königl. niederländischen Hauptmann a. D. Herrn H. Holz auf Amboina in den Monaten October 1882 bis April 1883 zusammen- gebrachten und nach Europa übergeführten, nicht unbeträchtlichen Sammlung von Lepidopteren. Im Verein mit einer kleineren Anzahl von Schmetter- lingen aus Amboina, welche mir bereits früher durch die gütige Vermitte- luug des Herrn Dr. A. von Plason in Wien zugekommen waren, bot sich mir hierdurch eine willkommene Anregung zum näheren Studium sowohl der allgemeinen Verhältnisse jener von der Natur so reich begünstigten Insel des malayischen Archipels, als zu einer Zusammenstellung dessen, was sich in der mir zugängig gewordenen Literatur über die Lepidopteren- Fauna Amboina's vorfindet. In ganz besonders dankenswerther Weise wurde ich von Seiten des Herrn P. C. T. Sn eilen in Rotterdam und weiter von den Herren G. Semper in Altona, C. Plötz in Greifswald, Oberstlieutenant a. D. Saalmüller in Frankfurt a. M. und Appellationsgerichtsrath Dr. Rössler in Wiesbaden*) durch gütige Bestimmung mir unbekannter Thiere und durch Nachweis von Literatur, wie auch von den Herren Dr. Staudinger in Blasewitz-Dresden und H. Ribbe daselbst durch käufliche Ueberlassung von Lepidopteren, namentlich von Batjan und den Aru-Inseln, welche in vergleichender Beziehung vielfaches Interesse boten, unterstützt. Seizmair Abstract Alytana bifurcalis Seizmair, sp. n. is described as new for Science. The adult male and female, and the genitalia are described and figured. The differential features as to the only hitherto known, Alytana aldabralis (Viette, 1958) are given. The occurrence of the genus Alytana Shaffer & Munroe, 2007 is new to the entomofauna of the Arabian Peninsula. KEY WORDS: Lepidoptera, Pyraloidea, Crambidae, Spilomelinae, Alytana, new species, Oman. Spilomelinae and Pyraustinae form a species-rich monophylum of Crambidae (snout moths). Morphological distinction of the two groups has been diffcult in the past, and the morphologically heterogenous Spilomelinae has not been broadly accepted as a natural group due to the lack of convincing apomorphies. -

DUKE Abstract: A historical review is given of the taxonomic placements of the genus Spiramiopsis and of the previous records of the immature stages and larval foodplants of its sole species, S. comma H am pson . The only confirmed larval foodplants of the species are twining asclepiads of the genus Secamone. The entire life history and all immature stages of S. comma are described and illustrated, including the chaetotaxy of the first-instar larva. The larva and pupa of S. comma are compared with those of other bombycoid families having larvae with dorsal processes, viz. Brahmaeidae, Lemoniidae, Bombycidae, Saturniidae, Sphingidae and Mirinidae, to assess whether S. comma agrees with any of these in preimaginal characters and whether any such agreements are structurally identical. Spiramiopsis is placed in the latest phylogenetic classification system of the Bombycoidea (M inet 1994) according to its preimaginal characters, where it comes near the Lemoniidae and Brahmaeidae but is not traceable to any specific family.
