Abstract: This study describes the results and collection practices for obtaining arthropod samples to be stud- ied as potential sources of new medicines in a bioprospecting effort. From 1994 to 1998, 1800 arthropod sam- ples of 6-10 g were collected in 21 sites of the Área de Conservación Guancaste (A.C.G) in Northwestern Costa Rica. The samples corresponded to 642 species distributed in 21 orders and 95 families. Most of the collections were obtained in the rainy season and in the tropical rainforest and dry forest of the ACG. Samples were obtained from a diversity of arthropod orders: 49.72% of the samples collected corresponded to Lepidoptera, 15.75% to Coleoptera, 13.33% to Hymenoptera, 11.43% to Orthoptera, 6.75% to Hemiptera, 3.20% to Homoptera and 7.89% to other groups. -

Chapter 15. Central and Eastern Africa: Overview
Chapter 15 Chapter 15 CENTRAL AND EASTERN AFRICA: OVERVIEW The region as treated here is comprised mainly of Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Kinshasa) (formerly Zaire), Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. The wide variety of insects eaten includes at least 163 species, 121 genera, 34 families and 10 orders. Of this group the specific identity is known for 128 species, only the generic identity for another 21, only the family identity of another 12 and only the order identity of one. Gomez et al (1961) estimated that insects furnished 10% of the animal proteins produced annually in Congo (Kinshasa). Yet, in this region, as in others, insect use has been greatly under-reported and under-studied. Until recently, for example, the specific identity was known for fewer than twenty species of insects used in Congo (Kinshasa), but, in a careful study confined only to caterpillars and only to the southern part of the country, Malaisse and Parent (1980) distinguished 35 species of caterpillars used as food. The extent of insect use throughout the region is probably similar to that in Congo (Kinshasa) and Zambia, the best-studied countries. Research is needed. Caterpillars and termites are the most widely marketed insects in the region, but many others are also important from the food standpoint, nutritionally, economically or ecologically. As stated by this author (DeFoliart 1989): "One can't help but wonder what the ecological and nutritional maps of Africa might look like today if more effort had been directed toward developing some of these caterpillar, termite, and other food insect resources." The inclusion of food insects in the Africa-wide Exhibition on Indigenous Food Technologies held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1995 is indicative of the resurgence of interest in this resource by the scientific community of the continent. -

Winter, Jr. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRE SID ENT r AL PROFILE IAN FRANCIS BELL COMMON was born in Alford, Lincolnshire, England on June 23, 1917, and soon afterwards his Australian parents returned with their family to Queensland. After attending the Toowoomba Grammar School, he graduated in Arts and in Agricultural Science (both with first class honours) from the University of Queensland. He received the degrees of MA in 1946, MAgrSc in 1953 and DAgrSc in 1969. In 1945 he was appointed as an entomologist in the Department of Agriculture in central Queensland and in 1948 joined the Division of Entomology, €SIRO, in Canberra. He is currently a Chief Research Scientist of that Division and Chief Curator of the Australian National Insect Collection. For as long as he can remember Dr. Common has been fascinated by things that crawl. While at school, and under the stimulating guidance of the late E.J.Dumigan and W.B.Barnard, two well known Queensland collectors, he began a collection of but terflies and moths, much of which is now part of the ANIC. Although University studies greatly broaden ed his view of entomology, he retained and expanded his early interest in the taxonomy of Lepidoptera. Dr. Ian Francis Bell Common His training in taxonomic and economic entomology impressed upon him the basic need for accurate identification in all entomological investigations. -

Russo Abstract This study summarises the known records of the Macrolepidoptera species of the “Bosco Palazzi” area near the municipality of Putignano (Apulia region) in the Murgia mountains in southern Italy. The list of species is based on historical bibliographic data along with new material collected by other entomologists in the last few decades. A total of 207 species belonging to the families Cossidae (3 species), Drepanidae (4 species), Lasiocampidae (7 species), Limacodidae (1 species), Saturniidae (2 species), Sphingidae (5 species), Brahmaeidae (1 species), Geometridae (55 species), Notodontidae (5 species), Nolidae (3 species), Euteliidae (1 species), Noctuidae (96 species), and Erebidae (24 species) were identified. -

The differential features from the next similar species are presented. This is the first record of this genus from Laos. Introduction Drepanidae (hook tip moths) are a relatively small, and well known family. Most of the species occur in South-East Asia with about 400 species in the Oriental region (BUCHSBAUM 2000, 2003, BUCHSBAUM & MILLER 2002, HEPPNER 1991). The Siamese Subregion, also called Indo-Burmese or Indo-Chinese region is one of the biodiversity hotspots in the world (BROOKS et. al. 2002, MITTERMEIER et al. 1998, MYERS et al. 2000, SEDLAG 1984, 1995). -

About 7 miles from the city is Pushkar Lake created by the touch of Lord Brahma. The Dargah of khawaja Moinuddin chisti is holiest shrine next to Mecca in the world. Ajmer is abode of certain flora and fauna that are particularly endemic to semi-arid and are specially adapted to survive in the dry waterless region of the state. Lepidoptera integument covered with scales forming colored patterns. Availability of moths were more during the nights and population seemed to be Confined to the light areas. Moths are insects with 2 pair of broad wings covered with microscopic scales drably coloured and held flat when at rest. They do not have clubbed antennae. They are nocturnal.
