Bass ___________________________ Richard Rosa ___________________________ José María Rodríguez-García An abstract of a dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Studies in the Graduate School of Duke University 2012 Copyright by Leonardo Mauricio Bacarreza 2012 Abstract In my dissertation I propose that the detailed representation of food and eating in seventeenth-century Spanish art and literature has a double purpose: to reaffirm a state of well-being in Spain, and to show a critical position, because artistic creations emphasize those subjects who, because of social status or cultural background, do not share such benefits. This double purpose explains why literature and painting stress the distance between foodstuffs and consumers, turning food into a commodity that cannot be consumed directly, but through its representation and value. Cervantes’s writing is invoked because, especially in Don Quixote, readers can see how the protagonist rejects food for the sake of achieving higher chivalric values, while his companion, Sancho Panza, faces the opposite problem: having food at hand and not being able to enjoy it, especially when he achieves his dream of ruling an island. The principle is similar in genre painting: food is consumed out of the picture in still lifes, or out of the hands of the represented characters in kitchen scenes, for they are depicted cooking for others. Because of the distance between product and consumer, foodstuffs indicate how precedence and authority are established and reproduced in society. In artistic representations, these apparently unchangeable principles are mimicked by the lower classes and used to establish parallel systems of authority such as the guild of thieves who are presented around a table in a scene of Cervantes’s exemplary novel “Rinconete and Cortadillo.” Another problem to which the representation of foodstuffs responds is the inclusion of New Christians from different origins. In a counterpoint with the scenes in which precedence is discussed, and frequently through similar aesthetic structures, Cervantes and his contemporaries create scenes where the Christian principle of sharing food and drinking wine together is the model of inclusion that dissolves distinctions between Old and New Christians. I argue that this alternative project iv of community can be related to the expulsion of the Moriscos from Spain, decreed in 1609, because this event made many subjects interrogate themselves about their own status and inclusion. An artistic model of response to these interrogations about belonging is the figure of the roadside meal, which appears as the main motif of a meal shared by Sancho and a self- proclaimed Christian Morisco in the second part of Don Quixote, and reappears in a painting by Diego de Velázquez, which presents in the foreground a dark-skinned servant working in a kitchen, and in the background another roadside meal: the Supper at Emmaus. Both in literature and painting the way of preparing meals, eating and drinking creates ties, establishes a different principle of belonging, and promotes unity. In this alternative model characters are recognized as subjects of the kingdom as long as they eat and drink the way Christians do. Improvisation, International Dimension and Influence of Art on Reality [00:00:00] Professor Roberto González Echevarría: There are three issues that I want to bring up as I begin today's lecture that will determine my general themes today: improvisation, the international dimension that the fiction of the novel acquires, and the influence of art or of literature on reality; those are the general topics. As we move to the conclusion of the Quixote, the issue of how to bring the novel to a close must have loomed large in Cervantes' mind. The plot of the novel is repetitive, more than sequential, with a vague quest of the protagonist to revive the age of chivalry, concretely, to participate in the jousts in Saragossa as goals, but there is no obvious or impending goal to the characters' wonderings. Although, one could argue, with Williamson, the critic I mentioned in the last lecture, that the disenchantment of Dulcinea is the main purpose of Don Quixote and Sancho set by Merlin's prophecy and involving the three thousand lashes that Sancho must apply to his bottom, and the interplay between the two about accomplishing that goal of disenchanting Dulcinea. Yet, even, this is no clear mission whose accomplishment would bring the novel to an end. What if Dulcinea is disenchanted? How could she be disenchanted? What would that mean? Would she and Don Quixote, then, marry? This is not mentioned by the protagonist, nor is marriage normally a desired end to courtly love.

No literary critic in the world, or cultural critic, or even philosopher fails to mention it, to analyze it to interpret it. It has been influential to thinkers from Lukács to Foucault to Bakhtin to Girard to the Frankfurt School, and to writers from Sterne to Nabokov to Borges to Flaubert. No other book in the world, except for the Bible, has been translated to more languages, or undergone more editions and reprints, or generated so many books and articles about it. It is, of course, a novel, the first modern novel according to most critics, a herald of modernity, but it is also a book that scrutinizes the human psyche, the nature of empire and domination, the reality of the real, or the way in which it is reality that imitates fiction as much as the other way around. The purpose of this course is to read and comment this one book. Or it can be argued that it is two books, because Cervantes published Part I in 1605, and Part II in 1615… or it can be argued that it is three books, because a “fake” Don Quixote was published in 1614, which Cervantes incorporates in a brilliant intertextual exercise, or it can even be argued—following Borges—that we are dealing with an unlimited number of Don Quixotes.

    TRI-KAPPA COLLECTION OF ARTWORKS at ROSE-HULMAN The Tri-Kappa Art Collecion of Indiana artists is valuable and unique. Started in 1932, the collection contains over 100 artworks by almost as many artists. The value of the collection has increased manyfold since then. After years of traveling all over the state, it was found necessary to permanently house the collection. As a result of an all-chapter poll in 1973, the chapters voted to loan nearly every painting to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The works would be reframed and restored if necessary, insured, and hung permanently in the John Logan Library, which is hailed as a fire-proof building. A few paintings have been added to the collection in the library since 1973. The Tri-Kappa chapters are encouraged to plan outings to view the collection. 1 PATRIARCH MAPLE 69th Hoosier Salon 1993 Ken Bucklew (b. 1957) No. 1 Oil 15.5 X 11.5 Ken was born in Greencastle, Indiana on March 8, 1957. He grew up on the edge of Spencer in Owen County, Indiana about 13 miles northeast of Bloomington. The Bucklew Gallery is currently located in Spencer near the entrance to Indiana’s oldest “ McCormick’s Creek” State Park. Ken’s natural talent for drawing and painting was recognized by his elementary school art teacher, Ms. Ina Hight, who gave him an awareness of his potential. Ken’s work began earning him recognition, awards and a limited income during his high school years. Ken was accepted by a technical school and planned on earning his degree in commercial art.
