Great view of a well respected Hollywood character actorBy Scott GFor many people watching movies the character actor is someone they might remember after a while, never bothering to remember their name.Richard Jaeckel definitely fit into that category. Mr. Freese has given light to one of the definitive character actors in Hollywood history.I knew a lot of Jaeckel's work, like many thinking first of his part in but this biography reminds of so much more thatRichard Jaeckel did. He worked with a who's who of top Hollywood talent. He went from A-list movies to B-list and enormous amount of tvcredits as well. While some thought of him as a standard heavy he showed so much more, receiving an Oscar nomination along the way. This book gives great details from those who knew him best, fellow character actors. I highly recommend reading this; you will find yourselfusing the internet movie data base to read further about some of his roles along with checking out You Tube as well for some clips of this fine actor of character at work.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very Highly RecommendedBy CustomerI can't conceive of a better biography of one of my favorite actors. Gene Freese has certainly done his homework and I daresay Mr. Jaeckel would have been very pleased with the way his life was documented by him. Richard Jaeckel always came across as a kind, thoughtful, fun-loving man, and this book just proves that was true. I really liked Richard Jaeckel's bad guys best, but it's good to know that in real life he was anything but a bad guy. He's one of those actors we would all wish we could have known personally. Like so many actors, his final years are a very sad thing to read about...... broke and dying in terrible pain. He never did get the kind of respect he deserved...... as an actor or as a man, but at least he had many fans, friends and family who loved and respected him. By Mr. Freese's own account, Richard Jaeckel had nothing to be ashamed of. This book is very highly recommended.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. 10 to Yuma' to "The Dirty Dozen" to "Starman"By John BlytheAlways been a fan of Richard Jaeckel's acting career. This book provided in detail his incredible journey from a mailboy at Fox Studios to his service in the US Navy, to all of the major roles he played in films from '' to '3:10 to Yuma' to "The Dirty Dozen" to "Starman"; along with his Oscar nominated role in 'Sometimes a Great Notion' and his role on TV's 'Baywatch'. Highly recommended for fans of veteran Hollywood character actors.

Character actor Richard Jaeckel worked five decades in Hollywood alongside the industry's biggest names. Noted for tough-guy portrayals, he appeared in such classic westerns and war films as Sands of Iwo Jima (1949), (1950), 3:10 to Yuma (1957), and The Dirty Dozen (1967). Bringing strength and integrity to his roles, he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Sometimes a Great Notion (1970). A World War II veteran and Merchant Marine, he was respected in the surfing and fitness communities for his ageless athleticism. His performance as Turk in Come Back, Little Sheba (1952) was groundbreaking for iron-pumping actors wanting to be taken seriously for their dramatic abilities. This revealing portrait of the life of a working character actor covers Jaeckel's noteworthy career through each of his film and television appearances, from Guadalcanal Diary (1943) to Baywatch (1994). Recollections and behind the scenes stories from those he knew and worked with offer an in-depth look at the dedication and professionalism it takes to make it in Hollywood.

"Freese relates the making of each and every Jaeckel film or TV show with dozens of comments from fellow actors and stuntmen, offering depth into open of the nicest men in the business"-- Clippings.About the AuthorGene Freese is a screenwriter living in Phoenix, Arizona.
