Gestural Abstraction in Australian Art 1947 – 1963: Repositioning the Work of Albert Tucker
Gestural Abstraction in Australian Art 1947 – 1963: Repositioning the Work of Albert Tucker Volume One Carol Ann Gilchrist A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art History School of Humanities Faculty of Arts University of Adelaide South Australia October 2015 Thesis Declaration I certify that this work contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in my name, in any university or other tertiary institution and, to the best of my knowledge and belief, contains no material previously published or written by another person, except where due reference has been made in the text. In addition, I certify that no part of this work will, in the future, be used for any other degree or diploma in any university or other tertiary institution without the prior approval of the University of Adelaide and where applicable, any partner institution responsible for the joint-award of this degree. INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -

Emilio Pettoruti
Emilio Pettoruti A Painter before the Mirror m - STOCKCERO - n iii Emilio Pettoruti A Painter before the Mirror iv Emilio Pettoruti The memoirs of Emilio Pettoruti ( La Plata 1892-Paris 1971) “A painter before the Mirror” was published a few years before the painter´s death. Not only do we witness the vicissi- tudes of his struggle in order to impose his works, but we also find key aspects of his aesthetic convictions. His ties with Fu- turism and Cubism, his appreciation of color and light, in short a conception of art that led him to evolve towards an original abstraction, as his last paintings so well demonstrate. His essential concepts about art and life are highlighted by an existence defined by his beliefs and passions”. The Forming of the Metal Arts Guild, San Francisco (1929-1964)
Metal Rising: The Forming of the Metal Arts Guild, San Francisco (1929-1964) Jennifer Shaifer Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master’s of Arts in the History of Decorative Arts. The Smithsonian Associates and Corcoran College of Art + Design 2011 © 2011 Jennifer Shaifer All Rights Reserved ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This thesis is a project I hold dear to my heart. A milestone in my life in which I will never forget. My research started as a journey across the United States to tell a story about the formation of the Metal Arts Guild, but has ended with a discovery about the strength of the human spirit. I was not fortunate to meet many of the founding members of the Metal Arts Guild, but my research into the lives and careers of Margaret De Patta, Irena Brynner, and Peter Macchiarini has provided me with invaluable inspiration. Despite the adversity these artists faced, their strength still reverberates through the trails of history they left behind for an emerging scholar like me. Throughout this project, I have received so much support. I would like to thank Heidi Nasstrom Evans, my thesis advisor, for her encouragement and patience during the thesis writing process. It was during her Spring 2007 class on modernism, that I was introduced to a whole new world of art history. I also want to thank Cynthia Williams and Peggy Newman for their constant source of support. A huge thank you to Alison Antleman and Rebecca Deans for giving me access to MAG’s archives and allowing me to tell their organization’s story. -
ABSTRACT Title of Document: VISUALIZING AMERICAN
ABSTRACT Title of Document: VISUALIZING AMERICAN HISTORY AND IDENTITY IN THE ELLEN PHILLIPS SAMUEL MEMORIAL Abby Rebecca Eron, Master of Arts, 2014 Directed By: Professor Renée Ater, Department of Art History and Archaeology In her will, Philadelphia philanthropist Ellen Phillips Samuel designated $500,000 to the Fairmount Park Art Association “for the erection of statuary on the banks of the Schuylkill River … emblematic of the history of America from the time of the earliest settlers to the present.” The initial phase of the resulting sculpture project – the Central Terrace of the Samuel Memorial – should be considered one of the fullest realizations of New Deal sculpture. It in many ways corresponds (conceptually, thematically, and stylistically) with the simultaneously developing art programs of the federal government. Analyzing the Memorial project highlights some of the tensions underlying New Deal public art, such as the difficulties of visualizing American identity and history, as well as the complexities involved in the process of commissioning artwork intended to fulfill certain programmatic purposes while also allowing for a level of individual artists’ creative expression.
