    Saving Sarah Fricker: Accurately Representing the Realities of the Coleridges’ Marriage Saving Sarah Fricker: Accurately Representing the Realities of the Coleridges’ Marriage Cori Mathis Abstract The Lake Poets circle was prolific; they wrote letters to each other constantly, leaving a clear picture of the beginning and eventual decline of the marriage between Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Sarah Fricker Coleridge. Coleridge also was fond of chronicling his personal life in his work. Coleridge’s poetry and prose clearly show that, though he may have come to regret it, he originally married Sarah Fricker for love and was very happy in the beginning of their relationship. The problem with their marriage was that they were just fundamentally incompatible, something that was not Sarah Fricker’s fault—she was a product of her society and simply unprepared to be a wife to someone like Coleridge. Unfortunately, scholars have taken Coleridge’s letters as pure truth and seem to have forgotten that every marriage has two partners, both with their own perspectives. This reflects a deliberate ignorance of Coleridge’s tendency to see situations quite differently from how they actually were. Because of this tradition, Sarah Fricker Coleridge is often portrayed as difficult at best and a harridan at worst. It does not help that she attempted to help her husband’s reputation by the majority of their letters that she possessed—one cannot see her side as clearly. In this essay, I hope to prove that she was simply an unhappy wife, married to a poetic genius who had decided she was the impediment to his happiness while she only wanted to keep their family together and safe.

E che gli ha anche dato la libertà di sbizzarrirsi con alcune singolari pseudobiografie come L’altra faccia dell’amore (1971), Messia selvaggio (1972), La perdizione (1974), Lisztomania (1975) e Valentino (1977), e di mostrare una strana sorta di versatilità nel 1971, passando dallo ‘scandaloso’I Diavoli a Il boy friend un omaggio ai musical degli anni ‘30. Nel 1975 si è dedicato all’opera rock degli Who Tommy dando al progetto il suo tocco personale: bisogna vedere una scena con Ann-Margaret per crederci. Ha avuto un forte successo commerciale in America con Stati di Allucinazione nel 1980, dopo il quale è tornato ai budget ridotti e ai suoi progetti personali con certi titoli brillanti come China Blue (1984), Gothic (1986), L’ultima Salomè e la commedia horror cult La tana del serpente bianco (entrambi del 1988).

Gwen Harwood is regarded as one of Australia's finest poets, publishing over 420 works, including 386 poems and 13 librettos. She won numerous poetry awards and prizes. Her work is commonly studied in schools and university courses. Gwen Harwood is the mother of the author John Harwood. Life She was born in Taringa, Queensland and brought up in Brisbane. She attended Brisbane Girls Grammar School and was an organist at All Saints Church when she was young. She completed a music teacher's diploma, and also worked as a typist at the War Damage Commission from 1942. Early in her life, she developed an interest in literature, philosophy and music. She moved to Tasmania after her marriage to linguist William Harwood in September 1945. Here she developed her lifelong interest in the work of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein "which informs her entire opus". Her father played piano, violin, guitar and the flute. Both Gwen and her brother were given piano lessons, and originally Gwen wanted to be a musician. Gwen's grandmother introduced her to poetry; this inspired her and became her life long calling and passion. Literary Career Gwen Harwood had written poetry for many years, and her first poem was published in Meanjin in 1944, but her work did not start appearing regularly in journals and books until the 1960s.
