2017 Ada County Big Year 252 Species in 2017

You know it’s going to be a good year when you start out finding a Great Gray (first Ada County eBird record)

I haphazardly did an Ada County big year this year. A big year is when you try to find as many species as possible in a given area. I say haphazardly because it started out like any other year of birding. I spent a lot of time traveling out of state during the first of the year. My main focus at that time was trying to see how many states I could in which ended up being 20 states and the District of Columbia. I visited 23 states but 3 of them were on a train in the dark. I ended up with 380 bird species in the United States in 2017 – a personal record.

I also set a personal record in Idaho with 282 species. I traveled far less than in other years in Idaho but Ada County had a lot of prime species that were discovered this year. The shorebirds and other species at Blacks Creek Bird Reserve were phenomenal. It was also a good year for several montane species in Ada County.

It wasn’t until things settled down from my travels, that I decided I’d try to keep pace with Jordan Ragsdale who had the most species in Ada County at the time. He was trying to break my Ada County record of 243 species. We helped each other out and we received lots of additional help from sightings by several other birders in the valley using eBird. Even then, I wasn’t trying to do a big year but trying to keep pace with Jordan was probably better. I decided in August, after several great species at Blacks Creek Bird Reserve that I’d try to finish the year off strong and try to break my record. Not going after a Willet was my only regret. I had several species during the early part of the year that I missed that would soon migrate back. It was during that time of fall migration that I passed Jordan and knew that I’d probably break my old record. Jordan ended the year with 238 species. We now text all the time.

After several trips hiking from Aldape Summit to Intermountain Bird Observatory at Lucky Peak, continued sightings at Blacks Creek and great finds from others like Brown Thrasher, I not only passed my record but obliterated it. I encountered all the I missed at the beginning of the year and had a long streak of good luck with rare species that I found or that were reported by others.

At times, it felt like nothing could go wrong to the point that I wondered if people would believe me. I tried really hard to document everything with photos or help other people find the same birds. I really enjoy and get a lot of satisfaction from helping others find rare species. That in itself paid off big because several birders contacted me about their rare sightings before the eBird alerts.

The friendships I’ve made is a valuable part of my birding experience. I’ve never met a birder I didn’t like! Even though it wasn’t a full attempt to do an Ada County big year, I don’t think I could break the record of 252 species in any given county in Idaho. Many things seemed to play in my favor.

I won’t be putting in the same kind of effort that I have the last couple of years to chase rarities. Even though I love it, it takes time and resources away from my family. I actually find it interesting to see how many birds I’ll see in Ada County this next year without all of the additional chasing. However, I’ll have to chase a few birds so I can see all the other birders. I enjoy the associations and things I learn from friends on the birding trail. Happy birding and I hope to see you on the trail!

A rare first-winter Harris’s Sparrow found by RL Rowland at Hulls Gulch Most Memorable Sighting in 2017 Great Gray Owl – Hulls Gulch http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S34278560

I remember when I first saw it, I felt like rubbing my eyes and slapping myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. I was in disbelief. I phoned a few birders but I didn’t send out a mass e-mail since it was a sensitive species. The word soon got out and many people came to see the owl. There ended up being a pair that hung out in the area for a couple weeks.

I had a birder from back east contact me earlier via e-mail. He gave me a short list of species to see if I could help him find in the area. I gave him a list of locations for a few birds but I told him that he wouldn’t find a Great Gray Owl in Ada County. I e-mailed him back the day before he arrived and told him that I found one and he was able to see it. A lifer for him!

Hiking through the woods alone at midnight was a hoot!

Favorite Chases in 2017 Snow Bunting – Blacks Creek Bird Reserve (closest looks ever). American Golden Plover & Stilt Sandpiper – Blacks Creek Bird Reserve. RL Rowland and I drove to Canyon County that morning to get my lifer STSA reported by Cheryl Huizinga the day before. While there looking at the STSA in Canyon County, Cheryl reported another STSA in Ada. I convinced RL to go see it and I got my first Ada County STSA the same day. Black-backed Woodpecker – Intermountain Bird Observatory at Lucky Peak. I saw BBWO and WISA in the same area along with several HAWO. Broad-tailed Hawk - Intermountain Bird Observatory at Lucky Peak (closest looks ever).

My Ada County Firsts for 2017 Great Gray Owl, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Stilt Sandpiper, Palm Warbler, American Golden Plover, Sabine’s Gull, Brown Thrasher, Black-backed Woodpecker, Black-throated Gray Warbler White-winged Scoter, Common Redpoll

Most Productive Hot Spots 1. Blacks Creek Bird Reserve - American Golden Plover, Stilt Sandpiper, Short-billed Dowitcher, Sabines Gull, Palm Warbler, Bobolink, Eurasian Wigeon, Black , , Surf Scoter, , Snow Bunting and all the shorebirds you’d expect to find in Ada County.

2. Hike from Aldape to IBO at Lucky Peak – Black-backed Woodpecker, Williamson’s Sapsucker, Pileated Woodpecker, Flammulated Owl, Northern Pygmy-Owl, Broad-winged Hawk, Varied Thrush, Rufous Hummingbird, White-breasted Nuthatch, Mountain Chickadee, Red Crossbill, Vireos, Tanagers, Warblers and all the other expected montane species for this area.

3. Dry Creek Cemetery - California Scrub Jay, Golden-crowned Sparrow, White-winged Crossbill, Red-naped Sapsucker, White-throated Sparrow, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Evening Grosbeak, Fox Sparrow, Cordilleran Flycatcher and Harlan’s Red-tailed Hawk. This year, since its close, I’ve enjoyed several Sunday morning walks due to my later church schedule. My Sunday walk on Mother’s Day brought one of my favorite sightings of the year – California Scrub Jay!!!

California Scrub Jay I found on Mother’s Day at Dry Creek Cemetery (Mary Rumple photo) Favorite Birding Spots The hike from Aldape Summit to Intermountain Bird Observatory at Lucky Peak can’t be beat in Ada County! I ran into a Bear and Elk on several occasions this past year. I’ve never ran into another hiker and the birding is spectacular!

Blacks Creek Bird Reserve was HOT this year after the biggest winter since I’ve lived here in sixteen years. Any day can bring a surprise and a one-day wonder!

The Boise River Garden City West Bridge was a favorite of mine but it was closed all spring and into summer due to flooding from our big winter. The dredge pond with the mud flats was filled with water causing this hotspot to fall from grace. It hasn’t been the same.

Avimor boomed this year! Too many people on the trails now to continue to be a favorite but it will always be good for spring migration. Bewick’s Wren, Gray Catbird, Grasshopper Sparrow and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher will still continue to be highlights. Avimor is preserving the riparian corridors.

Peggy’s Trail is a lesser known trail in the Boise Foothills and is becoming a new favorite mostly because of the riparian corridor, solitude, scenery and proximity to my house. I did a spring hike and found Northern Goshawk and Gray Flycatcher. On my most recent hike just before Christmas I found Bushtit, Meadowlark and Loggerhead Shrike (all species missed on the Boise Christmas Bird Count a few days prior where over 100 species were found).

Favorite New Yard Birds in 2017 Blue Jay Anna’s Hummingbird Stellar’s Jay Red Crossbill Calliope Hummingbird Bald Eagle – Christmas Day

Idaho Sightings (282 in 2017) I started out my Idaho year with the only Mega-rarity I’ve ever seen. I traveled with a fun bunch of folks up to Hells Gate State Park on January 6th to see the Red-flanked Bluetail found by John Hanna. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S33521736

Another Idaho sighting of special interest this year was the Cassia Crossbill - Idaho’s new endemic species listed in 2017! https://idahobirds.net/birding-idaho/cassia-crossbill There are only a couple of states with endemic bird species that I can think of: California – Island Scrub-Jay, Yellow-billed Magpie and Florida – Florida Scrub-Jay.

My father, RL Rowland and I spent the day in the south hills of Cassia County. We had a great day finding Cassia Crossbill at a few locations. They’re bills are a little bigger but the distinguishing indicator from the other Red Crossbill types are their contact call. It was great to get this species in the year it was listed.

My most unexpected sighting was the Ruddy Turnstone being reported at Camas National Wildlife Refuge. I happened to be in the area dropping my daughter off in Rexburg and had time to make a quick trip. I didn’t realize that these coastal birds have been seen inland during migration until recently. There was a White-eyed Vireo being seen at the refuge as well but I never could find it. There were several exciting new birds that I added to my Idaho list this year:

2017 Idaho Additions Red-flanked Bluetail Tufted Indigo Bunting Blue Grosbeak Stilt Sandpiper Ruddy Turnstone Palm Warbler American Golden-Plover Cassia Crossbill (Idaho’s endemic species added in 2017) Brown Thrasher Pomarine Jaeger Northern Mockingbird LeConte’s Sparrow A rare Northern Mockingbird reported by Carl Lundblad at Hells Gate State Park in northern Idaho National Bird Sightings (380 in 2017) Birded in 20 states and the District of Columbia for a combined 380 species. Favorites: 1. Florida trip with Steve Hofhine from Orland to the Everglades, Miami and the Florida Keys 2. Washington DC-Philadelphia-New York-Boston Trip 3. Washington and the San Juan Islands 4. California family vacation to Disneyland. The hike to the Hollywood Sign generated new lifers. 5. Oregon Coast family vacation

Black Oystercatcher and Harlequin along the Oregon Coast

A lifer Purple Gallinule at Orlando Wetlands Park in Florida

A lifer American Black Duck at Central Park in New York City

I started 2018 out with a bang! I walked out of the house on New Year’s and the first bird I heard was a Varied Thrush! First ever yard bird. I then got a good look at it as it continued singing. On January 4th I found a Winter Wren!!! A first for Ada County and the third sighting for Idaho. https://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S41618272
