First, we will tour the Old State Capital Building and the Lincoln Presidential Library where we will see a presentation of “Stealing Lincoln’s Body” plus have time to see all the exhibits, etc. Did you know on the night of the presidential election in 1876, a gang of counterfeiters out of Chicago attempted to steal the entombed embalmed body of Abraham Lincoln and hold it for ransom?!! We will learn all the interesting facts of this crazy scheme. Springfield is also famous for its original Horseshoe sandwich. Our luncheon’s highlight will be this famous open-faced sandwich consisting of a thick-sliced toasted bread, a hamburger patty, cheese sauce, and then French fries. Don’t make diet plans that day! Plans also include a tour of the Dana Thomas Frank Lloyd Wright Home and a two-hour city tour with a step-on guide which includes a tour of Lincoln’s home. Springfield is proud of its Lincoln heritage and would love to show it off to you. Springfield’s Red Coach Inn and other restaurants later served the horseshoe sandwich or variations of it. There were some reports that Leland staff who had moved on to other restaurants invented the horseshoe. They may have contributed to later variations. However, Tony Leone, Springfield's resident "horseshoe historian," says it's "indisputable" that Chef Schweska was the original 'Shoe Chef. Leone, who owns Springfield's historic Pasfield House Inn and serves on the Illinois Historic Preservation Board, says it is well documented that Schweska created the original horseshoe sandwich. The Pasfield House Inn won "Best Breakfast Horseshoe" honors for an adaptation of its popular Egg Strata, 'shoe-style, in the World Horseshoe Cookoff. The event coincided with the 100th anniversary World Horseshoe Pitching Tournament, hosted by Springfield in 2009.
