AMBASSADOR CAN DIZDAR Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to the United Arab Emirates TBC / MD ss AMBASSADOR’S MESSAGE I would like to begin by expressing my gratitude to the Turkish Business Council in Dubai and Northern Emirates and the Turkish Business Council in Abu Dhabi for their valuable contributions to the trade relations between Turkey and the UAE. Turkish Business Councils play a significant role in bolstering the economic and commercial ties between Turkey and the UAE through raising awareness, providing guidance for doing business and offering mutually beneficial investment opportunities. Turkish Business Councils also support the Turkish businesspersons who do business in the UAE and bond with the Turkish community through their activities. Turkey-UAE relations is that of two brotherly peoples, taking its strength from close cultural, social, religious and historical ties, which all together provide for a strong basis that allows for improving the relations between the two countries for the benefit and best interest of both peoples. Turkey’s strong ties with the region, in general, and with the UAE following her emergence as an independent State, in particular, have laid the sound foundation which is a valuable incentive for both Turkish and UAE entrepreneurs to develop business in various fields to the best interest of our respective economies. The fact that around 15 thousand Turkish citizens are living and more than 600 Turkish companies are operating in the UAE reflects the interest the Turkish community and the businesspersons shows towards the UAE economy, on the one hand, and manifests their contribution to the country, on the other. The presence of Turkish companies and businesspeople in the fairs and exhibitions held in the UAE in all fields are always at the top layer as Turkey has always been among the top ten trade partners of the UAE. Turkish investments in the UAE has also been growing steadily and considerably just as the number of Turkish tourists visiting the country, adding to the Turkish contributions to the UAE economy. It is my firm belief that the Turkish Business Councils in the UAE will be surpassing themselves every year in connecting the Turkish business community to the local market and beyond as well as in increasing their contribution to the trade and economic relations between Turkey and the UAE. To achieve this, the unwavering affection of the UAE people towards Turkey and vice versa will continue to be our biggest asset. Can Dizdar Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to the United Arab Emirates ss TBC / MD H.E. HAMAD BUAMIM President and CEO Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry TBC / MD ss PRESIDENT & CEO’S MESSAGE It is my honour to introduce the Turkish Business Council Member Directory 2019, which is an extremely useful and reliable resource for Dubai’s business community. The publication of this directory comes at an exciting time for UAE-Turkey economic relations as new bridges are built between the countries’ business communities. Recent trade trends are a positive sign that the best is yet to come as Dubai’s non-oil trade with Turkey exceeded $7 billion in 2018, while the scope of bilateral trade has broadened to new product categories. Meanwhile, the number of Turkish companies registered with Dubai Chamber has grown to reach over 500 today, reflecting the deepening ties that our countries share. The Turkish Business Council has played a crucial role in facilitating cooperation between Turkish businesses and their Dubai-based counterparts. Dubai Chamber is working closely with the Council to expand economic cooperation within key sectors of mutual interest such as tourism, logistics, manufacturing and agriculture. We remain committed to providing all necessary support and resources to Turkish companies that are keen to set up in Dubai, or leverage the Emirate as a strategic gateway to access emerging markets around the world. As Dubai prepares for Expo 2020, there are plenty of exciting business opportunities which Turkish businesses can capitalise on, especially within the areas of smart city solutions, innovation, infrastructure, renewable energy and sustainability. The mega event offers an ideal platform that Turkish businesses can use to boost their global profile and showcase their capabilities to the 25 million visitors who will be in attendance. Through our fruitful cooperation and combined efforts, I am confident that bilateral relations will continue to develop and flourish in the future. On behalf of Dubai Chamber, I wish the Turkish Business Council and its esteemed members a very prosperous 2019. President and CEO Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry ss TBC / MD MUSTAFA ILKER KILIC Consul General of the Republic of Turkey in Dubai Dubai - United Arab Emirates TBC / MD ss CONSUL GENERAL’S MESSAGE One of the primary areas of activity of the Consulate General of Turkey in Dubai is to promote Turkish interests in trade, investment and tourism. In this regard, I believe that the Turkish Business Council in Dubai and Northern Emirates (TBC) plays a complementary role, and appreciate its presence. The vast majority of Turkish citizens in the UAE reside and work in Dubai. The Turkish population in Dubai has continued to increase at a steady pace. Similarly, we also see a constant rise in the number and range of Turkish companies that seek to enter the market or increase their local footprint. TBC has an important mission to light the way for these Turkish businesses, and to promote the interaction of its members so as to create a synergy and share experiences. I am confident that TBC’s new leadership will continue to fulfill this mission and to further increase membership in a proactive manner. I also would like to seize this opportunity to express my appreciation for the relentless efforts of the past TBC administrations. On the other hand, I believe that this Members Directory is a useful guide in providing information on the TBC’s structure and mission, and on the UAE, and in taking a snapshot of the landscape of Turkish businesses in Dubai. The Consulate General will continue to support the Turkish Business Council in Dubai and Northern Emirates in its endeavors. Mustafa Ilker Kilic Consul General of the Republic of Turkey in Dubai Dubai - United Arab Emirates ss TBC / MD FATMA NILGUN EMREM President - Turkish Business Council in Dubai and Northern Emirates TBC / MD ss PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE It has been 15 years since the Turkish Business Council in Dubai and Northern Emirates (TBC) was founded under the roof of Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry by a handful of Turkish businessmen with the aim of increasing the economic activities, cooperation and enhancing trade relations between the business communities of Dubai. Besides this founding mission, TBC plays a vital role in connecting the Turkish business society within the UAE. We witness a continuous increase in the number of Turkish entrepreneurs, investors, successful Turkish professionals among all industries and background, leading brands and companies of Turkey finding their well-deserved place in the multinational and highly competitive business environment of Dubai. Turkish Business Council is the only official business organization that represents the Turkish business community residing in the UAE, as well as the Turkish companies and commercial entities who have chosen Dubai as an ideal location in the Middle East to grow their business. It is with great honor that I got the opportunity to serve as the newly elected President of the Board of Directors of TBC starting from 20th of March 2019. Since then, myself, our board members and newly appointed business council coordinators have been working relentlessly to improve the much needed structure and policies of our business council in order to ensure a more efficient, compliant and dynamic environment for our valuable members as well as the Turkish business community in the UAE. It is my main goal to fulfill all responsibilities embedded in this challenging role and elevate the Turkish Business Councils to higher levels with the valuable contributions of all our board members, council members and the Turkish community living in Dubai and the Northern Emirates. We have set ambitious targets to achieve during our new term and carry the flag for future managements as it has always been. We will strengthen the ties within the Turkish business community to reflect our combined power in each and every sector we are representing in the UAE such as tourism, hospitality, banking and finance, trade, logistics, construction, services and Information Technologies as the rising industries not only in Turkey but also globally.

  • Implementing Sustainable Construction Practices in Dubai – a Policy Instrument Assessment
Master Thesis in Built Environment (15 credits) Implementing Sustainable Construction Practices in Dubai – a policy instrument assessment Marco Maguina Academic Supervisor: Catarina Thormark Spring Semester 2011 Master Thesis in Built Environment Implementing Sustainable Construction Practices in Dubai – a policy instrument assessment Author: Marco Maguina Faculty: Culture and Society School: Malmö University Master Thesis: 15 credits Academic Supervisor: Catarina Thormark Examiner: Johnny Kronvall Maguina, Marco 2 Master Thesis in Built Environment SUMMARY Recognized as one of the main obstacles to sustainable development, climate change is caused and accelerated by the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated from all energy end-user sectors. The building sector alone consumes around 40% of all produced energy worldwide. Reducing this sector’s energy consumption has therefore come into focus as one of the key issues to address in order to meet the climate change challenge. Implementing sustainable construction practices, such as LEED, can significantly reduce the building’s energy and water consumption. Prescribing these practices may however encounter several barriers that can produce other than intended results. Since the beginning of 2008 Dubai mandates a LEED certification for the better part of all new constructions developed within the emirate, nevertheless the success of this regulation is debatable. This thesis identifies the barriers the introduction of the sustainable construction practices in Dubai faced and analyses the reasons why the regulatory and voluntary policy instruments were not effective in dealing with these barriers. Understanding these barriers as well as the merits and weaknesses of the policy instruments will help future attempts to introduce sustainable construction practices. To put the research into context a literature review of relevant printed and internet sources has been performed.

The U.A.E. Healthcare Sector An Update: January 2018 The U.S.-U.A.E. Business Council is the premier business organization dedicated to advancing bilateral commercial relations. By leveraging its extensive networks in the U.S. and in the region, the U.S.-U.A.E. Business Council provides unparalleled access to senior decision makers in business and government with the aim of deepening bilateral trade and investment. U.S.-U.A.E. Business Council 505 Ninth Street, NW Suite 6010 Washington D.C. +202.863.7285 [email protected] usuaebusiness.org 1 INTRODUCTION The U.A.E.’s healthcare sector has dramatically expanded over the past four decades. At the time of the U.A.E.’s founding in 1971, the country had just seven hospitals and 12 health centers. As of 2015, according to the latest figures from the U.A.E. statistics authority, the U.A.E. had 126 public and private hospitals with a combined capacity of over 12,000 beds.1 U.S. companies and citizens have played an important role in this growth story, as best symbolized by the Oasis Hospital in Al Ain. In 1960, U.S. missionaries Drs. Pat and Marian Kennedy built this hospital – the U.A.E.’s first – in a mud-block guesthouse donated by the late U.A.E. President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.2 Over the next 50 years, this hospital birthed more than 90,000 babies, including members of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family.3 Moreover, it retained strong connections with that family, which funded the hospital’s expansion earlier this decade.4 As the U.A.E.

Dubai 2020: Dreamscapes, Mega Malls and Spaces of Post-Modernity Dubai’s hosting of the 2020 Expo further authenticates its status as an example of an emerging Arab city that displays modernity through sequences of fragmented urban- scapes, and introvert spaces.
