Villalobos Jeff Winking Head of Department, Irene Moyna May 2017 Major Subject: Hispanic Studies Copyright 2017 Joan Parmer Barrett ABSTRACT The objective of the present work evaluates an overview of original texts by and about the isolated Tarahumara of Mexico by considering key elements of their passive and active traditions, which reveal the unique values and ideologies of the group, and give understanding to the relevant past and present discourse as a form of social practice, identity, and shared knowledge and beliefs by analyzing transcripts of Tarahumara oral tradition along with modern interpretative writings, some by modern day authors from the Mexican sierra, that retain some aspects of the traditional transcripts while simultaneously suggesting a departure from some time-honored facets of the ancient tribe living in the twenty-first century. By taking a page from Vladamir Propp’s Mythology of the Folk Tale (1928), his structural analysis of one hundred Russian fairy tales, this work analyzes transcriptions of one hundred Tarahumara oral traditions that had never been categorized or morphologically analyzed collectively before to reveal ways that social and political negotiations have been reproduced in discourse and how this interdiscursivity with modern texts by current sierra authors connects to the formation and maintenance of cultural determination while simultaneously serving as resistance against external influence. This study of an intertextual nature signals not only the historical situation of the Tarahumara of Mexico in our modern world, but also secures for modern academia a neoteric plot on the map of pre-Colombian ideology by extending Alan Dunde’s “The Morphology of North America Indian Folktales” (1980) for the first time to the works of ii the Mexican Tarahumara traditional tales, demonstrating that Tarahumara folktales and myths are structured as well, not simply told in random formless tales, and can be successfully submitted to a morphological componential analysis, which will aid in the elucidation of cultural norms, values, and penchants. This study of Tarahumara texts will serve as a vehicle for understanding the perpetuation of group behavior and norms by analysis of the structural patterns, will reveal wish and wish fulfillment of the tribe, and will consequently stand as a reflector of sierra societal reality. iii DEDICATION This work is devoted to those who have gone before me to pave the way to knowledge so that I may continue to carry the torch of enlightenment a step forward. I am pleased to acknowledge the effort of two friends and colleagues from Mexico, who have contributed tremendously to my research efforts to locate native texts and have provided support in my development to learn more about the Tarahumaras of Mexico. First, Professor Gloria García Pérez, a teacher who was born in the sierra, has used her knowledge of the region to locate and make available rare copies of native works, and secondly, Dr. Hugo Eduardo Irigoyen Gutierrez, a medical doctor and professor at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Chihuahua has helped locate important native texts that are relevant to this study, including making contact so that I could meet with Don Erasmo Palma, elected Tarahumara governor of Norogachi in 2011, to discuss his works. Both are natives of Chihuahua, Mexico and have truly welcomed me and my research in a partnership of their own quest for more knowledge. I want to express my appreciation to three writers: Don Burgess, who made himself available to communicate via e-mail and sent copies and advice about his many varied writings and linguistic studies about the Tarahumaras; Humberto Quezada Prado, who shared bits of direct commentary about his Cuentos de Francisco Machiwi via Facebook messaging; and Hermelinda Palma González, who jotted down in a spiral notebook five Tarahumara tales from the Ciénega Prieta and Guérachi region that were passed down from her father, a Rarámuri who has resided in the sierra all of his life. vi I must thank my editor, Ann Westbrook, for her knowledge and expertise in guiding the final product of this work.     Go Noah Go! Education Pack littleangeltheatre.com | 020 7226 1787 John Wright, the founder of Little Angel Theatre, was born in South Africa in 1906. He travelled to England in 1935 and worked as an assistant stage manager for the Ballet Rambert while studying at the Central School of Art and Design. During this time he saw a puppet performance by Podrecca’s Piccoli and became hooked. John made his very first puppet in 1938. In 1961 John and his troupe found a derelict temperance hall in Islington and transformed it into a theatre, designed for the presentation of marionette shows. It opened on Saturday 24th November 1961. This was to be the first purpose built puppet theatre the country had seen for many years and the only one with a permanent long string marionette bridge constructed backstage. The bridge was designed for puppeteers to stand on while they manipulate long stringed puppets who perform on the stage below leaving the audience unable to see the puppeteers. The original bridge is used to this day. The theatre has a traditional ‘proscenium arch’ and seats 100 audience members. John Wright died in 1991 but the work of the theatre continued apace with family, friends and supporters working tirelessly to continue in his footsteps to make sure John’s legacy would delight generations to come.     Artistic Geography and the Northern Jesuit Missions of New Spain By Clara Bargellini Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México [email protected] (working paper, not be reproduced without the author’s permission) George Kubler´s seminal thoughts on artistic geography came out of his involvement with the art and architecture of the Hispanic New World. This paper examines a group of 17th and 18th century Jesuit missions in northern Mexico in order to expand our understanding of New World artistic geography, and also to explore the history of some geographic notions and their place in art historical discussions. Whereas Kubler was concerned with the transmission of styles, my interest here will be the movement of specific objects and individuals within a particular historical configuration. This will involve, of course, considerations about patronage and institutions, with some references to iconography, all of which ultimately has implications for the transmission of styles, as Kubler would no doubt have recognized. The missions in question were established in the first half of the 17th century by the Jesuits in the northern Tepehuan and Southeastern Tarahumara region, and were held by the Society until its 1767 expulsion from New Spain. From their arrival in 1572 the Jesuits focused on ministry among the native population of New Spain. Almost at once they began missionary activity among the indigenous populations in places near Mexico City. By 1580 they were established at Tepotzotlán learning native languages. In 1589 the Jesuits were among the legendary chichimecas at San Luis de la Paz, and two years later they were in Sinaloa, where they established an extraordinary system of missions about which we now have only documents and very sparse remains.

    The History of the Redaction of the Genesis Flood Narrative Reconsidered by Joseph Guy Normand Cholette (2001) During the last century the history of the redaction of the Genesis Flood narrative has been predominantly interpreted in the perspective of the documentary hypothesis. According to this view the present Flood narrative was formed by a final redactor (R) who has amalgamated two different flood versions. These two flood versions are interpreted as the J source (the Yahwist), which comes from the Davidic or Solomonic period around the 10th or 9th century BC, and the source P (the Priestly writer), which comes from the exilic period around 6th or 5th century BC. During the last decades the documentary hypothesis has been seriously challenged by scholarship. Today some scholars proposed to understand the history of redaction of the Flood narrative in the perspective of the supplementary hypothesis. In the light of this proposal the narrative was gradually formed throughout the centuries by the successive work of the different redactors. During the last decades, several scholars have also questioned the chronology and the dating of the two sources J and P. Some proposed to interpret the source J in the light of the exilic period and other the source P before the exile. Consequently these alterations on the J and P sources have a major impact on the history of the redaction of the Genesis Flood narrative. The current study proposes to reconsider the history of the redaction of the Genesis Flood narrative in light of these new interpretations of the sources J and P.
