Micrelaps muelleri was rediscovered in Syria after 115 years. M. muelleri is one of the rarest snakes in the Near East being restricted to Mediterranean zones. The new Jocality in Syria falls within the Mediterranean zone at the southern foothills of the Ansari-Mountains (10 km W of Qal'at al Hosn - Crac des Chevaliers; 300 m a.s.l.). With respect to the new specimen, systematics, morphology, and distribution of the species are discussed. Key words: Atractaspididae: Micrelaps muelleri; Syria; morphology, habitat; distribution. Zusammenfassung Micrelaps muelleri, eine der seltensten Schlangen des Nahen Ostens, wurde nach über 100 Jahren in Syrien wiedergefunden. Der neue küstennahe Fundort liegt in der mediterranen Zone, in den südlichen Ausläufern des Ansari-Gebirges, unweit der Grenze zum Libanon (10 km W Qal'at al Hosn - Crac des Chevaliers; 300 m Meereshöhe). Entdeckungsge schichte und Wandel der systematischen Auffassungen bei dieser kleinen opisthoglyphen Natter werden geschildert. Die Morphologie des neuen Exemplares wird beschrieben. Die Verbreitung der Art von Israel im Süden bis Syrien im Norden sowie die versteckte Lebensweise werden diskutiert. Schlagwörter: Atractaspididae: Micrelaps muelleri; Syrien; Morphologie; Habitat; Verbreitung. 1 Einleitung Micrelaps muelleri, ein Endemit der levantinischen Küste und ihres mediterranen Hinterlandes, gehört zu den am wenigsten bekannten Schlangenarten des Nahen Ostens. Die Art und auch die Gattung wurden durch BöTTGER (1880) aus der Umgebung Jerusalems nach zwei Exemplaren beschrieben, die sich in den Sammlun gen des Senckenberg-Museums in Frankfurt/Main und des Naturkundemuseums Basel befinden. -

Fossil Amphibians and Reptiles from the Neogene Locality of Maramena (Greece), the Most Diverse European Herpetofauna at the Miocene/Pliocene Transition Boundary

Georgalis, Andrea Villa, Martin Ivanov, Davit Vasilyan, and Massimo Delfino ABSTRACT We herein describe the fossil amphibians and reptiles from the Neogene (latest Miocene or earliest Pliocene; MN 13/14) locality of Maramena, in northern Greece. The herpetofauna is shown to be extremely diverse, comprising at least 30 different taxa. Amphibians include at least six urodelan (Cryptobranchidae indet., Salamandrina sp., Lissotriton sp. [Lissotriton vulgaris group], Lissotriton sp., Ommatotriton sp., and Sala- mandra sp.), and three anuran taxa (Latonia sp., Hyla sp., and Pelophylax sp.). Rep- tiles are much more speciose, being represented by two turtle (the geoemydid Mauremys aristotelica and a probable indeterminate testudinid), at least nine lizard (Agaminae indet., Lacertidae indet., ?Lacertidae indet., aff. Palaeocordylus sp., ?Scin- cidae indet., Anguis sp., five morphotypes of Ophisaurus, Pseudopus sp., and at least one species of Varanus), and 10 snake taxa (Scolecophidia indet., Periergophis micros gen. et sp. nov., Paraxenophis spanios gen. et sp. nov., Hierophis cf. hungaricus, another distinct “colubrine” morphotype, Natrix aff. rudabanyaensis, and another dis- tinct species of Natrix, Naja sp., cf. Micrurus sp., and a member of the “Oriental Vipers” complex). The autapomorphic features and bizarre vertebral morphology of Perier- gophis micros gen. et sp. nov. and Paraxenophis spanios gen. et sp. nov. render them readily distinguishable among fossil and extant snakes. Cryptobranchids, several of the amphibian genera, scincids, Anguis, Pseudopus, and Micrurus represent totally new fossil occurrences, not only for the Greek area, but for the whole southeastern Europe. -

(Rhabdiasidae) and Hedruris miyakoensis sp. n. (Hedruridae) are described from skinks of the Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. Neoentomelas asatoi from the lung of Ateuchosaurus pellopleurus on Okinawa and Amami-oshima islands is distinguished from all other rhabdiasids in having well- developed dorsoventral lips with posteriorly directed lobulate formations. Hedruris miyakoensis from the stom- ach of Scincella boettgeri on Miyako Island differs from other species of the genus by the simple lateral cuticular structures of the interlabia, eggs without peripheral swellings, absence of preanal unpaired papilla, stout spicules with prominent accessory structure, simple hook of the holdfast, and/or difference in the measurements. Life history can help dictate resilience in the face of decline, and therefore understanding attributes such as sexual size dimorphism, site fidelity, and survival rates are essential. Australia is well-known for its diversity of scincid lizards, but we have little detailed knowledge of the life histories of individual scincid species. To examine the life history of the Coppertail Skink (Ctenotus taeniolatus), which uses scattered surface rocks as shelter, we estimated survival rates, growth rates, and age at maturity during a three-year capture-mark- recapture study. We captured mostly females (> 84%), and of individuals captured more than once, we captured 54.3% at least twice beneath the same rock, and of those, 64% were always beneath the same rock (up to five captures). -

This study was conducted in Bega Watershed, Mabuhay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur to document species diversity, richness, and endemism of reptiles using a combination of cruising and pitfall trapping methods. Sixteen reptile species comprising 13 (81.25%) endemic species with one Mindanao endemic were recorded in Bega Watershed. A moderate species diversity (H’=2.514) with a more or less even distribution was also documented. Sampling Site 1 (Bega Falls) had the highest species richness. Bray-Curtis cluster analysis showed that site 1 (Bega Falls) and site 4 (Malipaga area) had the highest similarity index (40%) while Detrended Correspondence Analysis showed that site 1 is the most diverse among the four sampling sites. Results indicate the need for conservation action since despite low elevation, small land area, and relatively high disturbance, Bega Watershed still supports diverse assemblage of reptiles. Amphibians and reptiles are recognized as sensitive indicators of ecosystem “health,” related to beneficial services (provisional, regulating, cultural, structural, functional) human societies receive from terrestrial watersheds. The Taguibo Watershed supplies fresh drinking water to Butuan City in the Caraga Region of northeast Mindanao Island. However, very little is known about the herpetofauna of the area. Here, we synthesize biodiversity data from historical (1971, 1979) and recent (2013, 2017) herpetological surveys from the region. We utilize specimen-associated occurrence records and natural history information to produce a species inventory, analyze their habitat utilization, and characterize diversity metrics to describe herpetological communities of the watershed – resulting in 44 species (27 new records). A number of historically-documented species persist, having partitioned riparian and terrestrial habitat types in dipterocarp and secondary-growth forests of Taguibo. -

We present a comprehensive inventory checklist of the herpetofauna of the Bai Tu Long National Park, Quang Ninh Province, northeastern Vietnam. As a result of our herpetological surveys in 2008, 2009, and 2011, a total of 29 spe- cies were recorded from the national park, comprising eight species of frogs, eleven species of lizards, and ten species of snakes. Thirteen species (or 44.8% of the total number of recorded species) were recorded for the first time from Bai Tu Long National Park, including six frog, four lizard, and three snake species. A Revision of the Chameleon Species Chamaeleo Pfeili Schleich
A revision of the chameleon species Chamaeleo pfeili Schleich (Squamata; Chamaeleonidae) with description of a new material of chamaeleonids from the Miocene deposits of southern Germany ANDREJ ÈERÒANSKÝ A revision of Chamaeleo pfeili Schleich is presented. The comparisons of the holotypic incomplete right maxilla with those of new specimens described here from the locality Langenau (MN 4b) and of the Recent species of Chamaeleo, Furcifer and Calumma is carried out. It is shown that the type material of C. pfeili and the material described here lack autapomorphic features. Schleich based his new species on the weak radial striations on the apical parts of bigger teeth. However, this character is seen in many species of extant chameleons, e.g. Calumma globifer, Furcifer pardalis and C. chamaeleon. For this reason, the name C. pfeili is considered a nomen dubium. This paper provides detailed descrip- tions and taxonomy of unpublished material from Petersbuch 2 (MN 4a) and Wannenwaldtobel (MN 5/6) in Germany. The material is only fragmentary and includes jaw bits. E. Madagascar two new species of Calumma chameleons belonging to the C. furcife r group were foundand are described here. The first species, Calumma vencesi n. sp., was found at three rainforest sites: Ambolokopatrika (corridor between the Anjanaharibe-Sud and Marojejy massifs), Besariaka (classifiedforest southof the Anjanaharibe Sud Massif), and Tsararano (forest between Besariaka and Masoala). This species is related to C. gastrotaenia, C. gui//aumeti and C: marojezensis. C. vencesi n. sp. differs in having a larger size, a dorsal crest, and - in fe males - a typical green coloration with a network of alternating dark and light semicircular stripes. Furthermore, it is characterized by a unique combination of hemipenis characters: a pair of sulcal rotulae anteriorly bearing a papillary fi eld; a pair of asulcal rotulae showing a double denticulated edge; and a pair of long pointed cylindrical papillae bearing a micropapillary field on top.
