BILL McKIVOR CTCC #3 PO BOX 46135 SEATTLE, WA 98146 (206) 244-8345 ------E-Mail [email protected] WEB SITE------bookmark www.thecoppercorner.com THE COPPER CORNER November, December 2019 , January 2020 “Something for Everyone” 18th Century “CONDER” TOKENS------17TH Century tokens—19th Century tokens Medals, medalets, unusual historical items LIST # 98

WELCOME TO LIST #98----This will be the third from the last list that concentrates on British tokens. List #99 will be in January, and #100 will be in April of 2020. As they go, the lists will feature really good material, some from my own collection. As to why---- The Copper Corner has a new owner, he will be starting in the spring, if not before, with some tokens on a new web site, with of all things photos, ability to buy on line, ability to pay right now, and other things. Of course he will also take e-mails and phone calls. His name is Brian Herriott, he lives in Ohio, and will let him eventually give you all the details. From what I see, he is a very nice fellow, who wants to do everything right by the customer, and continue the service I give. I think you will like him a lot.. And, he will be around for years, as he is, looking at my age---really quite young. Until he gets things rolling, he will be working on his web site, and I shall keep on keeping on.

So, the auctions this last fall, there was one, at DNW, that contained the collections of four collectors, which made it an auction that had depth in nearly all of D&H. The quality was quite good, though you did need to look at what you were buying to get one with no problems, that is just my fair warning at every auction.

Though I am leaving the business, I still bid on a good number of tokens and will have some nice things from the sale as time goes on. So, am not gone, will be around at least until June of next year. As well, am keeping the web site, and will have some British items, many medals--- as well as some Western Americana, which if you did not know, I also collect.

And, if you see an ad for some of my antique cars for sale, do not be surprised. I might even attach a photo of those, but right now will tell you that I have for sale a 1956 Studebaker Sky Hawk, 2 door hardtop Hawk, with the 289 motor, auto trans,--both engine and trans refurbished, 4 wheel disk brakes, and power steering. It needs to be finished, but has a nice new red leather interior---will need some new trim pieces, rechroming of a number of parts, a look at the exhaust system, a bit of upper fender work, and if you feel you need it a power assist on the 4 wheel disk brakes, which are essentially new. The suspension needs a bit of work too---- It also has 5 new tires. $12,500 or best offer. I drove it around today!! Sort of interested? Can e-mail you a photo of the car. And, of course, if you need a new D&H, do not forget that they are available now, the price $125 plus $10 for shipping, See page TWELVE for ordering and shipping information. Available from yours truly in the USA, and from Alan Judd in the UK, [email protected] this at 88 pounds. I still love the 18th C series, and you never know what I might have. 18th CENTURY TOKENS AS CATALOGUED BY DALTON AND HAMER PAGE TWO BUCKINGHAMSHIRE CHESHAM 20 1795 Cypher. This “always” weak obverse is again, but is quite a bit better than usual. Horse perfect, barrels not bad at all. Choice AU $110. HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY Kent tokens are almost always 1794? Wm Lutwyche had a man selling tokens to merchants during 1793, and he sold many on the token idea. It seems to me that he oversold the merchants, kept part of them, and had many UNCs to sell to collectors. A possible thing-- MIDDLESEX PENNY TOKENS PAGE THREE L&W series, all RARE, others as marked. GUILDHALL 194 ND This an unusual find, it is cupro-nickel and was struck around 1870, however it is listed in Dalton and Hamer. It has to be rare, have only seen three, I think, obverse has the bust of George III, “Naval Thanksgiving”, // View of the Guildhall. An always in demand piece, net AU, super RARE, hard to find $495. A bit of commentary---I have bought these at auction for collectors, only two, it is all I have found in super condition over the years, one was 500 pounds, when the dollar was $1.60 to the pound, and the piece with all fees came to $980. This piece, a choice brown net AU, with a stain from the deer’s horn to the rim. No marks, no scratches. Light handling. Ex Noble Sale, Ex Robbie Brown, owned probably because they found no other one. They are very RARE. Come get it, $495, perfection is $500 more. I really think you will like it----- it sold on the last list but came back, if you do not mind the stain it is cheap indeed. SLAVE PENNY 235 ND Kneeling Slave///”Whatever ye would do” &c. Two privately struck medals, on white metal or lead base, that says it all----1790’s England. 1. Liberty of conscience, equal representation, and just taxation//For a nation to be free it is sufficient that it wills it/// This piece about as made, but it says what it sets out to. 1790’s. 39mm, $145. 2. The Nation is the source of all Sovereignty// Liberty, equality, and an end to impress warrants. Not on the medal, this refers to enforced conscription to the Navy. Anti press gangs!! 1790’s. $145. THE FUN STUFF, medals and more PAGE TEN THE FIRST OFFERING UNDER THE “FUN STUFF” ONLY GOES TO PROVE THAT A LITTLE COLLECTION CAN BE GATHERED OVER TIME, EVEN IF IT IS ONLY THREE PIECES----- 1. A Medal. Copper, 63mm, Woman sitting on a cannon releases a pigeon, a balloon floats in the sky. It is Paris, 1870-71, during the siege by the Prussian army that lasted a year and a half. The reverse with a pigeon returning to a coop, legend around Ministre de la Guerre. On the obverse, in the exergue, it simply states Paris, 1870-71. The medal is as new, the price is $395, right where it has been for years. But, there is more.

2. Some years ago, spotted a medal that was obviously done professionally but not struck. It was housed in a round leather case that was a bit distressed, in that case was the medal which itself was in a turned brass screw case with glass on both sides, thus the obverse and the reverse of the medal can be seen.. The medal was a presentation to the Society of English Friends, and was made from an agricultural medal. The obverse of the medal was planed off, and a silver piece was put in the center, Ceres standing for France----there is an engraved legend around, Souvenir de Reconnaissance de Gratitude et de Profonde Estime------The reverse still has the original agriculture medal wreath, with a cow, horse, pigs, etc in it. The very center is engraved, as it is again around the edge.-----Siege of Paris, ---Ravitallement – 1870-1871, La Commune de Villemomble, Department de la Seine, a la Friend English Society. The edge of the medal is also engraved, Cette Medaille al ete votee a L’Unanamite Conseil Municipal De Villemomble sous la Presidence de Mr. Germain-Fouqu. The medal is silver, 68,mm, and the short version is that the town officially agreed to engrave this medal to the English friend’s Society--- with their profound esteem for getting supplies to the town. It seems that they did, and many years later it would up in an English auction. It can be yours, the case is sound but a bit worn, the brass screw section over the medal is nice, the medal is basically not changed from when it was originally put in the case. Value----it has no value, it is unique and a wonderful slice of history. But, since I did bid a good many pounds for it, as others saw the value too---I would walk away a slight winner with $1000 US dollars. Thus, that is what I am asking. There is one more thing----

3. Just recently, in another auction I spotted something I certainly knew about but had never seen, and never seen one for sale---it is a letter, dated December 1870, and sent to Tours (the provisional capital of France during the siege of Paris), with stamp cancelled, and on the cover of the self folding letter it says Par Ballon Monte. I have not had it translated, the writing is clear as it was when new, also includes information on the Balloon mail. I have contacted others in Paris and London about this piece, none of them have actually seen one but know that others have one. So, it is not unique. But it is almost as rare as the medal above, and certainly more fragile. Others have come up with what they think is the value of it in EF condition with no tears or problems, that is “around” $2500. I regretfully have no pigeon post for sale to round it off. Should you wish the trio, make me a sensible offer. Otherwise, it stands as is. Interesting story though---

I think one more interesting piece will fit here---Back in the late 19th and early 20th century the railroads gave passes to railway workers, mail men who used them to get from town to town, political subscribers, and as you might suspect, rich folks with ties to finance that affected railroads. One of those people was Chauncey M. DePew. De Pew was an attorney for Cornelius Vanderbilt’s railroad interests, and as well was the President of the New York Central railroad system, and a former Senator from New York. This item is a pass on a British line, the London and Northwestern railroad in the UK, and it was a British railway company between 1846 and 1922---and in the late 18oo’s it was the largest joint stock company in the world. Anyway, the London and Northwestern thought it good business to give Chauncey M. DePew a free pass on their line. Railway passes are usually cards, sometimes in plastic, other times just paper, but this one is special indeed, it is in a folding Leather oval small case, made out to Mr DePew, pass #271 for the year 1912. A First class pass, to boot. And, here it is, a former president of the New York Central, good friend and go to guy for Cornelius Vanderbilt, with a rail pass in a leather case. Most passes are $50 to $200, this one more, regretfully, but he was not a regular guy. The pass, with the history, Yours for $595. Fun stuff---PAGE ELEVEN A Coin----This a 1788 brown Gilt halfpenny, by Droz, purchased as this predates ’s foray into coining with the Soho Mint. Droz came to work for Boulton, and brought some coinage with him, to show what could be done. This is graded Proof 61, and is a good example of what Droz could do----though he seldom came through with what Boulton wanted. This halfpenny as above and in a old NGC holder. Yours $595. A Coin---A Soho Mint copper halfpenny restrike, from the Boulton Family holdings. George III obverse, Britannia seated Reverse, 1805 date. Graded Proof 64 Brown, NGC. Boulton Family Holdings written in the heading. Wonderful chocolate color and strike, $1650. Crystal Palace---44.5mm Bronzed medal, obverse the bust of Prince Albert, as President of the Royal Commission for the fair in the Crystal Palace, 1851. The reverse with a wreath, the world, and the word Exhibition across, “Exhibition of the works of industry of all nations”. Choice Bzd UNC $165. BOX MEDAL---in honor of the Duke of Wellington, who fought many battles against Napoleon on the Spanish peninsula, this medal was made. It is a round box with the names of 24 battles on a dozen or more paper roundels, starting with Talavera de la Reina in 1909, concluding with the battle of Waterloo, June 1815. As far as can tell, all the roundels are present. The case, copper, 48mm across and 8mm deep, has the bust of Wellington on the lid, and a laudatory statement of his value and valor on the base. This has been in my collection for a number of years, and has gone up during this time, but still is at $440. The case and roundels handled but undamaged. A fine record of the peninsular war, the battles, and when fought. Personal Medal, a most interesting presentation ----Presented to M. W, Taylor by the Committee, 1797. The above is on the back of the piece, which is a diamond shaped piece with a deep blue stone, and words on a silver shield in the center that translates to “Solace in Age”. There is no insight as to who presented the piece, but Mr. Taylor must have been a very deserving person. A very pretty piece, heavily ornamented around the edges, and with a hanger of the same ornaments. It has made it through the years, I have had this in my collection for a long time now, a very special item. $345. Three Shilling Bank Token, 1814. Obverse EF reverse AU++ Silver no pesting, all bright $275. Medal, Bust Prince of Wales//his crest “The Hope of England” medal is from 1783, fully GILT copper, a superb rendering of a medal not seen very often. Easily AU or better, 33mm $150. AD mirrors, first for Beddoe’s, mirror one side and paper ad the other, metal band attaches the two sides. , also One for F.C. Gove, made the same way, Beddoe’s $65, Gove $85. Nice. Both are Auburn, California. Ship---the Frigate Constellation, America’s first warship---large cent size token, made from the ship’s metal The ship on the obverse, Eagle over a banner with the info on it being made from, &c. EF $30. Brabant coinage, Flanders. Silver, Shield of Arms//Crown over crossed swords, KM34, 1652, VF $225. Brabant Patagon, KM 53.1, Silver, a rather larger size than the last, usual flaws same design 1636 VF $175. Counterstamped Halfpenny, 1870-90, T Coulsell, merchant, 29 Queen St London. Ctsp VF, coin AG. $95. Medal---33mm copper, Ship, HMS Victory, //Bust Nelson. Portsmouth Navy Week, EF or better HFS, $85. Service at a wreck----a Ship lifesaving medal, ------on one side, a Crown, and “Proof of Service at a Wreck”, the other side a Ship, “Board of Trade”, and “Rocket Apparatus”. Excellent surfaces, and about as made, 35mm, net grade AU, ------$150. If a ship foundered close to shore, people went there and handled lifelines, others fired a rocket down to the failing ship from the short, which took some skill. So, this medal was handed to those who handled the “rocket apparatus”, and when they turned it in to the board of trade they were paid more than the ordinary helpers. Interesting medal. Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. 1755. This is a ticket for the second gallery, it is brass, and has the bust of George II on the face. These are quite rare, this one was from the Noble Sale in 1999, lot 639---the reverse not as good as the obverse, but readable, $85 buys it. Monneron, Paris, had planned a group of medals on the famous men of France, but the war that broke out stopped it with only two types struck. This one is the bust of Rosseau, and it is an original Soho Mint striking with the lettered edge. It is EF or better, date 1791, and a good item from just before the French Revolution. All that, and $125 buys it. William Till, Great Russell Street---a numismatist and coin dealer who made the Slough tokens around 1834, though they are in D&H. This medal of ½ c size with Till’s Arms and legends. Prooflike UNC $75. TERMS OF SALE The Conder Token Collector’s Club invites you to join.
