  • A Brief Overview on Karabakh History from Past to Today
Volume: 8 Issue: 2 Year: 2011 A Brief Overview on Karabakh History from Past to Today Ercan Karakoç Abstract After initiation of the glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring) policies in the USSR by Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet Union started to crumble, and old, forgotten, suppressed problems especially regarding territorial claims between Azerbaijanis and Armenians reemerged. Although Mountainous (Nagorno) Karabakh is officially part of Azerbaijan Republic, after fierce and bloody clashes between Armenians and Azerbaijanis, the entire Nagorno Karabakh region and seven additional surrounding districts of Lachin, Kelbajar, Agdam, Jabrail, Fizuli, Khubadly and Zengilan, it means over 20 per cent of Azerbaijan, were occupied by Armenians, and because of serious war situations, many Azerbaijanis living in these areas had to migrate from their homeland to Azerbaijan and they have been living under miserable conditions since the early 1990s. Keywords: Karabakh, Caucasia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Ottoman Empire, Safavid Empire, Russia and Soviet Union Assistant Professor of Modern Turkish History, Yıldız Technical University, [email protected] 1003 Karakoç, E. Bu bağlamda, hukuken Azerbaycan devletinin bir parçası olan Dağlık Karabağ bölgesi ve çevresindeki Laçin, Kelbecer, Cebrail, Agdam, Fizuli, Zengilan ve Kubatlı gibi yedi semt, yani yaklaşık olarak Azerbaycan‟ın yüzde yirmiye yakın toprağı, her iki toplum arasındaki şiddetli ve kanlı çarpışmalardan sonra Ermeniler tarafından işgal edildi.

Crossing the Caspian PERSIA AND EUROPE 1500–1700 Crossing the Caspian PERSIA AND EUROPE, 1500–1700 Fig. 1 Johann Baptist Homann (Germany, 1663–1724), Map of the Persian Provinces of Gilan, Shirvan, and Dagestan (Provinciarum persicarum Kilaniae nempe Chirvaniae Dagestaniae), 1728. 1 1 Map, 18 ⁄2 × 22 ⁄16 in. Courtesy of Stanford University, David Rumsey Map Center Crossing the Caspian PERSIA AND EUROPE, 1500–1700 ALEXANDRIA HEJAZI TSAGARIS In 1728, the Nuremberg print shop of Johann Baptist Homann issued a revolutionary map of the Caspian Sea and its coastal Persian provinces (fig.1 ). Homann’s map was one of the first to accurately represent the shape of the Caspian, the world’s largest inland body of water, in the area surrounded by what we now know as Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Iran. Up until that point, cartographers had depicted it as a wide, vague oval, as in a 1634 example by Willem Janszoon Blaeu (fig. 2).1 The cartographic misperception carried on so long due to the simple fact that, until the 17th century, the Caspian remained an untraveled and mysterious waterway. Mapmakers like Blaeu—then the most sought-after cartographer in the Netherlands—still referenced Ptolemy’s ancient geographic atlases for templates of Caspian lands. But in 1600, this changed. In contrast to the empty sea in Blaeu’s map, the constellation of ships in the version by Homann demonstrate the emergence of the Caspian as a major water route between Persia and Europe. Ambassadors and merchants crossing it gathered direct knowledge of the sea as they navigated to and from the coasts of Persia.

  • Time in Early Modern Islam
Time in Early Modern Islam The prophet Muhammad and the early Islamic community radically redefined the concept of time that they had inherited from earlier religions’ beliefs and practices. This new temporal system, based on a lunar calendar and era, was complex and required sophistication and accuracy. From the ninth to the sixteenth centuries, it was the Muslim astronomers of the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires, and not those of Europe, who were responsible for the major advances in mathematics, astronomy, and astrology. Stephen P. Blake’s fascinating study compares the Islamic concept of time, and its historical and cultural significance, across these three great empires. Each empire, while mindful of earlier models, created a new temporal system, fashioning a new solar calendar and era and a new round of rituals and ceremonies from the cultural resources at hand. The hysteria that accompanied the end of the first Islamic millennium in 1591 also created a unique collection of apocalyptic prophets and movements in each empire. This book contributes not only to our understanding of the Muslim temporal system, but also to our appreciation of the influence of Islamic science on the Western world. Dr. Stephen P. Blake is Professor Emeritus at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, and Senior Research Fellow, Center for Early Modern History, University of Minnesota. 1029 57 BOGAZiÇi UNIVERSITES! DERGISi Be§eri Bilimler — Humanities Vols. 4-5 — 1976-1977 WHO WAS UMMI KEMAL?1 William C. Hickman * ABSTRACT Historians of Turkish literature have properly recognized Ummi Kemal as a tekke poet of the 15th century. This recognition falls short, however, of an ade quate understanding both of his historical identity and of the interest and impor tance of his poem. Ummi Kemal's divan survives today as virtually unique literary evidence for the character of (at least) one Anatolian branch of the Safavid tarikat centered in Ardabil. The sources available for a study of the poet-sheikh are compared and evaluated, including the previously ignored Menakib of Dervis, Ahmed. An attempt is made to judge Ummi Kemal's literary historical place from the point of view of the development of the Safavid political movement and its relations with the Ottomans. It is curious that a man whom M. Fuad KôpruliJ recognized, nearly half a century ago, as "one of the most remarkable mystical poets" of 15th century Anatolian Turkish literature remains even today obscure and misunderstood. Yet this is precisely the case with a man called Ismail who took the penname (manias) Ummi Kemal (or Kemal Ummi).2 It is all the more curious when one considers that the number of tekke poets from that century whose divans survive today can be counted on one hand. Elsewhere in his writings Kôprulu displayed little interest in the poet. His example has been followed by most subsequent literary historians and anthologizers who, if they men tion Ummi

  • The Divan by Goethe and the Poet Nesīmī
Ressort: Kunst, Kultur und Musik The Divan by Goethe and the poet Nesîmî Rome, 12.06.2019 [ENA] In West-East Divan (1819), Germany’s greatest poet J. W. von Goethe presented a work of eternal fascination. Inspired by the Divan (“Collection”) by medieval poet Khwaja Shams-ud-Din Muhammad Hafez-e Shirazi known by his pen name Hafez, Goethe combined his own identity with that of the Persian Sufi master who sang the delights of wine and tavern romance in a context of Qur’anic allusion. Hafez was the only one to whom Goethe dedicated an entire book. In his Zwillingsbruder he had discovered a poet whose inspiration stimulated in him a feeling of regeneration. In many poems he employed a “signature verse” (takallosá) typical of the gazal, in which he identifies with the Persian poet (see, e.g., 1998b,: “Und mit diesem Lied und Wendung/Sind wir wieder bei Hafisen”). In the Buch des Sängers and the Buch Hafis, where Hafez’s name is most often mentioned, motifs and characters from the latter’s poetry form the Persian mask of the Divan. In his Noten und Abhandlungen Goethe paid tribute to some other Persian poets: Ferdowsi, Anwari, Rumi, Sa?di, and Jami and Nezami (Goethe, 1998a, pp. 153-60) who was known also by the name "Imadaddin Nasimi". Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote about Nezami and his work: “A gentle, highly gifted spirit, who, when Ferdowsi had completed the collected heroic traditions, chose for the material of his poems the sweetest encounters of the deepest love. Majnun and Layli, Khosrow and Shirin, lovers he presented; meant for one another by premonition, destiny, nature, habit, inclination, passion staunchly devoted to each other; but divided by mad ideas, stubbornness, chance, necessity, and force, then miraculously reunited, yet in the end again in one way or another torn apart and separated from each other”.
