Aaron, Julie Guo, Linping Shen, Hua Dong (Photo/Reporter Fang Meng) U.S.-Asia Lawyer Cooperation Forum Held Reported by Fang Meng From New York As business exchanges between China and the United States becomes increasingly frequent, and following the trend of Chinese companies undertaking public listings and financing projects in the United States, the U.S.-Asia Lawyer Cooperation Forum was held at the New York County Lawyer’s Association in downtown Manhattan on the 16th, with members of the Chinese and American legal communities speaking, drawing a number of Chinese and American attorneys. New York County Lawyer’s Association President Stewart D. Aaron said, the business connections between China and the United States are growing ever closer, primarily embodied in certain Chinese companies with ongoing business activities in the United States. When the business volume reaches a certain level, [they] may choose to conduct legal proceedings in the US, and the legal affairs involved in cooperation between Chinese and U.S. corporations. He believes that differences in the legal systems, in translation, and in culture may sometimes lead to lengthened timeframes, which also requires greater understanding from both parties. New York State Supreme Court Judge Doris Ling-Cohan pointed out in her speech that, the most remarkable things about the US legal system are that the law guarantees the legal rights and interests of both parties regardless of their levels of wealth, that judges adjudicate cases independently, and that the trial format is primarily by independent juries.

  • Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion Injury Is Alleviated by Curcumin
Liao et al. Stem Cell Research & Therapy (2021) 12:89 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13287-020-02101-y RESEARCH Open Access Myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury is alleviated by curcumin-peptide hydrogel via upregulating autophagy and protecting mitochondrial function Chi-Lin Liao1†, Yang Liu2†, Meng-Zhao Huang1, Hua-Yong Liu1, Zi-Liang Ye3 and Qiang Su3* Abstract Background: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is an important factor limiting the success of cardiac reperfusion therapy. Curcumin has a significant cardioprotective effect against IRI, can inhibit ventricular remodeling induced by pressure load or MI, and improve cardiac function. However, the poor water solubility and low bioavailability of curcumin restrict its clinical application. Methods: In this study, we prepared and evaluated a curcumin-hydrogel (cur-hydrogel) to reduce cardiomyocyte apoptosis and reactive oxygen species formation induced by hypoxia-reoxygenation injury, promote autophagy, and reduce mitochondrial damage by maintaining the phosphorylation of Cx43. Results: Meanwhile, cur-hydrogel can restore cardiac function, inhibit myocardial collagen deposition and apoptosis, and activate JAK2/STAT3 pathway to alleviate myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats. Conclusions: The purpose of this study is to elucidate the protective effects of cur-hydrogel on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury by regulating apoptosis, autophagy, and mitochondrial injury in vitro and in vivo, which lays a new theoretical and experimental foundation for the prevention and reduction

Journal of Marine Science and Engineering Article A Survey of Marine Coastal Litters around Zhoushan Island, China and Their Impacts Xuehua Ma 1, Yi Zhou 1, Luyi Yang 1 and Jianfeng Tong 1,2,3,* 1 College of Marine Science, Shanghai Ocean University, Shanghai 201306, China; [email protected] (X.M.); [email protected] (Y.Z.); [email protected] (L.Y.) 2 National Engineering Research Center for Oceanic Fisheries, Shanghai 201306, China 3 Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Marine Science and Technology, Shanghai Ocean University, Shanghai 201306, China * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Rapid development of the economy increased marine litter around Zhoushan Island. Social- ecological scenario studies can help to develop strategies to adapt to such change. To investigate the present situation of marine litter pollution, a stratified random sampling (StRS) method was applied to survey the distribution of marine coastal litters around Zhoushan Island. A univariate analysis of variance was conducted to access the amount of litter in different landforms that include mudflats, artificial and rocky beaches. In addition, two questionnaires were designed for local fishermen and tourists to provide social scenarios. The results showed that the distribution of litter in different landforms was significantly different, while the distribution of litter in different sampling points had no significant difference. The StRS survey showed to be a valuable method for giving a relative overview of beach litter around Zhoushan Island with less effort in a future survey. The questionnaire feedbacks helped to understand the source of marine litter and showed the impact on the local environment and economy.

Swiss-Chinese Dispute Resolution Forum What the China-Switzerland Free Trade Agreement and Switzerland’s Arbitration Hub can offer to Chinese Companies 12 – 13 May 2015 Sofitel Shanghai Hyland Hotel 505 Nanjing Road East 200001 Shanghai Schedule at a glance Day One: Public Seminar: 12 May 2015 Day Two: Workshops for Practitioners: 13 May 2015 Conference topic Commerce between China and Switzerland is at an all-time high and is only set to continue its increase, especially in light of the Free Trade Agreement that came into force last year. Switzerland represents a unique opportunity for outbound Chinese investment, not only as its own market but as a gateway to Europe. Its centrally located, stable and reliable economy is linked to the neighbouring European Union through a network of bilateral agreements. Moreover, the Swiss legal system and its long- standing traditions of neutrality and dispute resolution make it the ideal choice as a seat of arbitration for agreements between Chinese and European (or other) parties. The Swiss judicial environment is arbitration-friendly and efficient. Like China, Switzerland has a civil law tradition, making Swiss law particularly well-suited to contracts involving Chinese parties. Switzerland is also home to a number of established and internationally renown arbitration institutions, including the Swiss Chambers’ International Arbitration Institution, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Arbitration and Mediation Center, the World Trade Organization’s Dispute Resolution Panel, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Workshop Objective and methodology On the occasion of the Swiss-Chinese Dispute Resolution Forum, Swiss arbitration experts will be available for a day to share practical know-how on key aspects of international arbitration proceedings.

  • Anisotropic Patterns of Liver Cancer Prevalence in Guangxi in Southwest China: Is Local Climate a Contributing Factor?
DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.7314/APJCP.2015.16.8.3579 Anisotropic Patterns of Liver Cancer Prevalence in Guangxi in Southwest China: Is Local Climate a Contributing Factor? RESEARCH ARTICLE Anisotropic Patterns of Liver Cancer Prevalence in Guangxi in Southwest China: Is Local Climate a Contributing Factor? Wei Deng1&, Long Long2&*, Xian-Yan Tang3, Tian-Ren Huang1, Ji-Lin Li1, Min- Hua Rong1, Ke-Zhi Li1, Hai-Zhou Liu1 Abstract Geographic information system (GIS) technology has useful applications for epidemiology, enabling the detection of spatial patterns of disease dispersion and locating geographic areas at increased risk. In this study, we applied GIS technology to characterize the spatial pattern of mortality due to liver cancer in the autonomous region of Guangxi Zhuang in southwest China. A database with liver cancer mortality data for 1971-1973, 1990-1992, and 2004-2005, including geographic locations and climate conditions, was constructed, and the appropriate associations were investigated. It was found that the regions with the highest mortality rates were central Guangxi with Guigang City at the center, and southwest Guangxi centered in Fusui County. Regions with the lowest mortality rates were eastern Guangxi with Pingnan County at the center, and northern Guangxi centered in Sanjiang and Rongshui counties. Regarding climate conditions, in the 1990s the mortality rate of liver cancer positively correlated with average temperature and average minimum temperature, and negatively correlated with average precipitation. In 2004 through 2005, mortality due to liver cancer positively correlated with the average minimum temperature. Regions of high mortality had lower average humidity and higher average barometric pressure than did regions of low mortality.
