CONFERENCE— 1 STUDIES After completing high school in , Gerry enrolled in pre-engineering at the University of British Columbia in 1920. The following year, Honorary President because he was short of funds, he obtained a teacher’s certificate and later taught in the small rural districts of Big Bar, northwest of Clinton, and at Kelly Lake (near ) in northeastern British Columbia. Gerry subse quently obtained a degree in forestry from the University of Toronto in 1930, and returned to work for Surveys Division of the B.C. Forest Service. He pioneered the use of aerial photography to map and inventory the province’s forested areas efficiently and accurately, and became chief of the Forest Service’s Air Survey Section in the late 1930s. During World War II he served with the Royal Engineers stationed in Great Britain. In 1944, as a major, he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his achievements in improving the optics of aerial cameras. Photogrammetry was a very important asset when mapping strategic landing areas on the Normandy coast of France in preparation for the Allied invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944. When Gerry was discharged in 1946 he had attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He returned to British Columbia and was soon appointed Surveyor-General and Director of Surveys and Mapping Branch, Department of Lands, Forests, and Water Resources. He retired from this position in 1968, then travelled to South America and southeast Asia in a professional Col. Gerald Smedley Andrews capacity.
