    RICHARD F. HASKAYNE, OC, AOE, FCA Richard F. Haskayne, OC, AOE, FCA, is University of Calgary Board Chair Emeritus. He was Chairman of TransCanada Corporation (1998-2005), Fording Inc. (2001-2003), NOVA Corporation (1992 -1998), TransAlta Corporation (1996-1998) and MacMillan Bloedel (1996-1999). Prior to 1992, Mr. Haskayne was Chairman, President and CEO of Interhome Energy Inc., (IPL and Home Oil). Before joining Home Oil as President and CEO in 1982, he had spent more than 20 years with Hudson’s Bay Oil and Gas where he had been President since 1980. Raised in Gleichen, Alberta, Mr. Haskayne received a B. Comm. from the University of Alberta in 1956 and CA designation in 1959. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and Lifetime Achievement award recipient. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors, and Board member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the Alberta Bone and Joint Institute Mr. Haskayne is an Officer of the Order of Canada. He has received the Canadian Business Leader Award and Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the U of A and U of C. The Haskayne Chair in Accounting at U of C was announced in 2001 and in 2002, the Faculty of Management was renamed the Haskayne School of Business. In 2004, Richard Haskayne was inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame and received the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship. Dear Supporters, I am honoured to have recently joined Inn from the Cold as the organization’s Executive Director. Abe Brown Although I am new to this organization, I have a long history of serving Calgary’s most vulnerable populations and I am passionate about supporting them with research-based and innovative best MBA, M.R.Ed/C, practices which lead to empowerment and sustainability. This is Inn from the Cold’s look back at 2016, and I personally wish to extend my thanks to Executive Director, each and every one of you for your support in helping us offer shelter, sanctuary and healing to homeless children and their families to help them achieve independence. 2016 was a Inn from the Cold challenging year for many in our city, and I am proud to be part of an organization that met those challenges head on. We served many families through our programs and services, and offered a continuum of care through our Emergency Family Shelter, Early Childhood Development program, Housing with Intensive Supports and Journey House, our long-term housing program for female headed families. From overwhelming research, we also know that mental health, physical health, and addictions are primary barriers that trap vulnerable populations in homelessness, and so we are excited about our medical clinics and programs, which provide sustainable care and support to the families we serve. We also had the honour of being named one of Canada’s Top 10 Impact Charities by Charity Intelligence and being awarded the Western Legacy Sustained Contribution Group Award.

    506 Awards and AwardsFinancial and Assistance Financial Assistance 506 UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS General Information and Policies Application forms for bursaries and scholarships are available from the Student Awards and Financial Aid office by April each year. Application forms may also be printed off the Student Awards and Financial Aid office web site upon availability: www.ucalgary.ca/awards/ Application for awards must be made on the current application form. By completing one Undergraduate Awards application form, students will be considered for all awards listed in this section with the exception of those stating “No application required.” Unless otherwise stated, completed applications for Undergraduate Awards must be post-marked or received by the Student Awards and Financial Aid office on or before June 15. Where no application is required, the award is made automatically without need for application. Unless otherwise stated, the following policies are in effect with regard to University administered awards: In order to qualify: • Students must have completed their most recent consecutive Fall and Winter Sessions at the University of Calgary. An exception is made for students enrolled in Co-operative Education/Internship programs or Exchange programs involving only one semester of study. To qualify, courses in an exchange program must be eligible for transfer credit to be considered. • Students entering or continuing in the Bachelor of Education (Master of Teaching Program) are eligible to apply for Undergraduate Awards. • Students entering 5th year of a joint degree program are eligible to apply for Undergraduate Awards and will be considered for awards indicating students entering “Any” year or year 2, 3, or 4 • Students continuing in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program in the Faculty of Medicine are eligible to apply for Undergraduate Awards.

After the Nicaraguan Government announced that it had asked two key human rights institutions to leave the country, the head of the United Nation Human Rights Ms Michelle Bachelet, said on Friday that she was extremely alarmed by a decision that means, in effect, there will be no functioning independent human rights bodies left in Nicaragua. According to High Commissioner Bachelet, the two non-profit human rights organisations were set up by the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights:IACHR, in full co-operation with the Government after the violence and unrest earlier this year. One of them is MESENI, a follow-up mechanism from IACHR, set up specifically for Nicaragua and the other is known as, the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts:GIEI. “After the earlier cancellation of the registration and confiscation of properties of national NGOs working on human rights, the de facto expulsion of the two IACHR organisations means there are now virtually no functioning independent human rights bodies left in Nicaragua.” said Ms Bachelet. She added further that the Government has said it will no longer accept visits by the IACHR itself. 1 Since April, when student-led protests began in response to a decree, which raised taxes and ordered changes to social security, hundreds of people have been arrested.
