Defending champion UCSB retained its crown last weekend in the annual ECCSCC women’s swimming championships. Santa Barbara girls took third in the “ A ” division competition and garnered first in the “ B” division. UCLA won the “ A ” division, with Cal State Long Beach second, while San Fernando Valley State took second behind the Gauchos in the “ B” class. UCSB nearly doubled Valley State’s score in “ B” competition. Jeannette Mulholland captured firsts in both the “ A ” breaststroke events for Santa Barbara. In the 50 yard race, Miss Mulholland broke her own record with a 34.4 timing. Marilyn Chandler placed second in the 100 yard butterfly with a 1:05.4 clocking, and Tina Drucker swam an excellent freestyle leg to help the 200 yard medley relay team to a third place finish. Suzanne Tharp, Betsy Hillman, Sally Humphreys, and Fran Weems also helped the “ A ” team to its third place ranking. Outstanding performances in the “ B” division were turned in by Laurie Ackerman in the 100 yard individual medley and the 50 yard fly, and by both Jan Clark and Paula Wiest in the breaststroke.
