The series began on January 7, as Definitive Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim: v. 1 American newspaper comic strip chronicling the adventures of Asia-based hunter Jim Bradley, who was nicknamed Jungle Jim. The character also trekked through radio, film, comic book and television adaptations. The strip concluded on August 8, Illustrator Alex Raymond and pulp magazine author Don Moore created the original strip as a topper to run above Raymond's Flash Gordon. Jungle Jim and Flash Gordon were launched simultaneously on January 7, Don Moore Definitive Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim: v. 1 to script through the succession of artists. The strip, which never ran as a dailycame to an end in From tothere were 11 original Jungle Jim comic books produced by Standard Comics. King Features Syndicate published a single issue of Jungle Jim in This was designated 5 and was a reprint of Dell's issue 5 with a new cover by Wally Wood. Charlton Comics then picked up Dell's numbering for another seven issues 22—28 in —70 with stories scripted by Wood, Pat BoyetteBhob StewartJoe Gill and others. Unlike the protagonists of TarzanKa-ZarKaanga and other comics with jungle themes, Jim Bradley was based in Southeastern Asia rather than Africaand he was a hunter rather than a wild man in a loincloth. Other characters included the large, strong native Kolu who served his white comrade Jim in a manner somewhat similar to the character of Lothar in Mandrake the Magician. The femme fatale Lille DeVrille was added to the cast two years after the strip's debut. The comic's early years generally featured stories revolving around piratesslave traders and other common jungle antagonists. As World War II approached, Jungle Jimlike many American comicsdeveloped a wartime theme, with Jim fighting the Japaneseand it moved from its position as a topper strip to Definitive Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim: v. 1 own independent Sunday page. Each episode ran 15 minutes. Several episodes were based directly on the comic strip, such as The Ghost of the Java Sea. Gene Stafford scripted for producer Jay Clark. The Flash Gordon material is without a doubt classic, this also features the original Alex Raymond Jungle Jim toppers. The huge size, however does not mean the strips are large, in fact they still look quite small in order to fit both FG and JJ strips on a single page. The reproduction of the strips is generally sharp. For those not wanting to read it in its original format or without the Jungle Jim topper strips might prefer to get the Titan Flash Gordon reprints as they are a better format for reading and are slightly more enlarged than seen here.     POP CULTURE clusively with daytime. The show features no gunfights or car chases; there are moments of leisurely, uneventful conversation between the younger and older generations. It is a curious inversion: Where once daytime TV fled prime time, prime time now copies daytime. The evidence is every- where, from the success of The Forsyte Saga and Upstairs Down- stairs (soap operas with extra starch) to major television serials like Rich Man Poor Man, Roots, and Captains and Kings. Spec- taculars aside, even a regular offering such as Family reflects a soap-opera sense of continuity. The major characters suffer. They have affairs, consider marriage, drop out of school, worry about mortality It goes too far to say that daytime dramas are genuinely realistic. The necessities of the form require too many brushes with the kinds of crises that most families would suffer only a few times in a generation. But both soaps and game shows have certainly tried to move television closer to what Paddy Chayefsky called "the marvelous world of the ordinary." What daytime TV has given prime time is the possibility of exploring characters not through the prism of fantasy, but through a focus closer to the way most of us spend our lives. Rip Kirby, created in 1946, signaled a grand departure, both thematically and artistically, from the science fiction classic. He promulgated a new art style--one of cinematic photo-realism--that influenced such artists as Stan Drake, Leonard Starr, Al Williamson, and Neal Adams. Great art, good printing IDW produced another great book, beautifully crafted, with an interesting essay on Alex Raymond and Rip Kirby. Every effort was made to find the best sources for the dailies: it's a pity that they are not - apparently - syndicated proofs; very few are from original art (the first week and some others); the bulk is made of pretty good reproductions, some from second generation sources; some are not so good... I wonder: where are the KFS proofs?Forgive my English Five Stars Presenting the first volume of Alex Raymond's modernist classic Rip Kirby from its start in 1946.
