Official Chinese Sources on Recent Tibetan History: Local Gazetteers, Wenshi Ziliao, and CCP Histories Benno R. Weiner Columbia University [email protected] The following bibliography is the result of a desire to track down extant and available officially produced sources on the recent history of Tibetan regions of China. The purpose is not only to identify such volumes but also to locate them in accessible libraries outside of the PRC. The emphasis is on local gazetteers (difang zhi, sometimes referred to in English as “annals”), wenshi ziliao (“Literary and Historical Materials”), and Chinese Communist Party Organizational Histories (gongchandang zuzhi shi ziliao) that have been compiled and published since the early 1980s. These include provincial (sheng)-, prefectural (zhou)-, and county (xian)-level materials, and parallel-level “autonomous” and urban administrative districts. Local gazetteers are part of a distinctive “Chinese” tradition of historical writing, while wenshi ziliao represent a more recent way of recording the past favored early on by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for its perceived ablity to record the history of the subaltern and revolutionary classes. For more on either, please see Endymion Wilkinson, Chinese History: A Manual.1 Party histories, which generally cover 1949-1987, began appearing only in the 1990s. Due to both my personal research interests and the scarcity of this sort of material for the TAR, this bibliography is heavily weighted toward Eastern Tibet. All of Qinghai Province is included in this survey, as are the Tibetan autonomous administrative units of Gansu, Sichuan, and Yunnan Provinces. There are many related categories of material not included here. These include other forms of gazetteer (zhi), such as fengwu zhi (translated in one source as "annals of customs and scenery"), zhiwu zhi (gazetteer of flora) and gazetteers for individual work units and government agencies. The last have been included when they seem to hold potential importance in Tibetan regions. Thus, any monastic/temple gazetteer (sizhi) I could locate is listed below. Other categories of historical material that have been excluded include social investigations/reports (shehui diaocha/baogao), records of place names (diminglu; these are particularly numerous for Sichuan Province), chronologies of major events (dashiji; these often appear as part 1 of difang zhi), nianji (yearbooks) and census materials (renkou pucha ziliao). Likewise, materials predating the reform period (with the exception of a few wenshi ziliao series that began publication prior to the Cultural Revolution and were then continued in the reform period) and materials produced in Taiwan (often reprints of Republican or Qing material) are not included.2 1 Endymion Porter Wilkinson, Chinese History: A Manual, rev. and enl. ed, Harvard-Yenching Institute Monograph Series (Cambridge: Harvard University Asia Center for the Harvard-Yenching Institute; distributed by Harvard University Press, 2000). 2 For a bibliography that includes a more varied selection of material but is less comprehensive when it comes to recent difang zhi, wenshi ziliao and Party histories, see Kristina DyLiacco[sic], “Publishing Space Provided volume locations should not be taken as inclusive. Special attention has been placed on the holdings of Columbia University and then libraries in the Northeast United States, especially those that have reciprocal relationships with Columbia. Berkeley and University of Hong Kong have been included because each has exceptionally extensive holdings of difang zhi and wenshi ziliao. U of HK also possesses the only known available copies of many Party histories. Other libraries generally not included here but with significant holdings include UCLA, U of Michigan, Library of Congress, U of Toronto, ANU, and Waseda University. For a full list of libraries possessing each title, each volume should be searched individually. Although not cataloged on WorldCat or other external search engines, the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s University Service Centre (CUHK) has an unparalleled collection of difangzhi, including most Tibetan administrative areas for which they have been produced. As difangzhi for the TAR have apparently only recently begun to be published, the coverage for Central Tibet is still quite minimal. Note that this bibliography has been organized along the current administrative boundaries. This is because it accords with the way the materials themselves have been organized and the administrative hierarchies in which they were produced. Likewise, place names are given in the pinyin transliteration of their renderings in Chinese. Tibetan transliterations are only provided when the catalogs or databases do so, often indicating that a Tibetan title was included on the title page and/or colophon. While acknowledging the Sinocentric bias this may project, in this I follow the materials themselves―unless indicated titles are believed to be available solely in Chinese. Lastly, inconsistencies in citation format and the transliteration of Tibetan titles and names are due to inconsistencies between on-line catalogs and in input into the catalogs. Corrections, suggestions, and additional findings should be directed to Benno Weiner: [email protected] in the Tibetan Autonomous Region and Beyond: A Tentative Bibliography of Gazetteers and other Statistical, Administrative and Historical Literature on Tibetan Regions,” International Association of Orientalist Librarians 44 (2000–2001); http://wason.library.cornell.edu/iaol/Vol.44/tibetan_gazetters.pdf 2 Local Gazetteers (difang zhi)3 Qinghai Province Qinghai Sheng Qinghai Sheng Zhi. 81 vols.
