Abstract In the first half of the 20th century, there was an extensive biocoenosis of the unattached red algae Phyllophora crispa on the mussel muds of the central section of the Black Sea’s northwestern shelf, which is known as Zernov’s Phyllophora Field (ZPF). At that time, the area of ZPF was approximately 11000 km2. More than a century after the description of ZPF, long-term changes in its phyto- and zoobenthos have been noted. A period of ecological crisis of the Black Sea ecosystem during the second half of the 20th century was destructive for the phytobenthos of ZPF, with the complete degradation of unattached Phyllophora biocoenosis. In contrast, after a sharp decline in the quantitative development of macrozoobenthos of the soft bottoms in the 1970s, its recovery to pre-crisis levels in the 2010s was noted. Despite the difference in the aforementioned phyto- and zoobenthos dynamics, habitat in the 4025 km² area of the botanical sanctuary of national importance “Zernov’s Phyllophora Field” was recognised as Critically Endangered (CR) within the European Red List of Habitats. -

Marine Biodiversity Records (2016) 9:62 DOI 10.1186/s41200-016-0068-8 MARINE RECORD Open Access First record of Rhodymenia holmesii (Rhodymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) for the Mediterranean Sea from Morocco Ghizlane Salhi1*, Mustapha Hassoun1, Hanaa Moussa1, Hanaa Zbakh1,2 and Hassane Riadi1 Abstract Background: The rhodymenialean red algal species Rhodymenia holmesii was collected in the lower intertidal zones from Dalya and Al-Hoceima (Northern Morocco, Mediterranean Sea). This represents the first record and description in the Mediterranean Sea. Results: Moroccan materiel was studied in detail and compared with other closely related species. Descriptions of the morphological features reveal thalli with flaccid blades, 8 cm long, regularly dichotomously branched and attached with stoloniferous holdfast. Anatomically, cortical region composed of 2–3 cell layers and medulla composed of 3–5 cell layers. Conclusions: This finding indicates that the biodiversity of the related sites is probably richer than generally thought, and other phycological studies will increase the known algal biodiversity of the region. (Rhodophyta, Gigartinales) has been reported as a non-indigenous species in central Chile. In this area the geographic range described for the species encompasses approximately 200 km, from Cobquecura (36°08’S, 72°48’W) up to Punta Lavapié (37°08’S, 73°35’W). Observations carried out at 22 localities along the central-southern Chilean coast allow us to extend the known range of this species approximately 300 km to the north and 600 km to the south. Additional analysis indicated high percentage cover on areas described as the introduction point of the species.
