Adding to the excitement of the first day was the presence of a number of special guests, including Minister of Education Liz Sandals, MPP Glen Murray, Director of Education Angela Gauthier, Associate Director Gary Poole, Superintendent of Early Learning Cristina Fernandes and Superintendent of Schools John Shanahan. St. Sylvester School’s Terry Fox Spirit “T-E-R-R-Y Let’s all keep his dream alive... Go Terry Go...Gimme a T, Gimme an E, Gimme an R, Gimme another R, Gimme a Y, Gimme an F, Gimme an O, Gimme an X. What do you got? Terry Fox...Louder…” These were just some of the chants heard on our Terry Fox 5k walk on Friday, September 26th. The Sun was shining, the students were chanting, and together with our police escort of 4 offices on bikes and two cruisers blocking the road with police sirens blaring, we had an absolutely magnificent afternoon. As we neared the 4.5 km point of our walk, we stopped for an overall group picture, did some group chants and sang O Canada in recognition of a great Canadian Hero. After all our donations were counted, we raised $775 for Cancer Research. Congratulations to Alex Tam for winning our Terry Fox t-shirt as the top fundraiser. St. Vincent de Paul's 100th Anniversary The day began with Mass at St. Vincent de Paul church (also celebrating a century this year) and festivities continued in the school with musical performances, dancing and plenty of food. Alumni, staff, students and their families celebrated the 100th anniversary of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School on September 27th. Alumni reminisced over old class photos and visited a ‘live’ classroom replica from around the 1930s. Sacred Heart Parents Have Heart Sacred Heart parents, long known for their dedication and commitment to their community, roll up their sleeves and organize nutritious snacks for students at Sacred Heart. All week long parents volunteer their time to ensure that delicious healthy eating is taking place in the school. Way to go Sacred Heart!!! Bishop Allen Academy 2nd Annual Redbird Run 2014 A one mile run for grade nine students was held on Tuesday, September 9th during period 4. Over 300 grade nine students ran a one mile race around the neighbouring streets of Bishop Allen starting at Berry Road Park. Boys and girls ran in separate races. The top three boys and top three girls each received a ribbon. The first place winners will receive a trophy. The winning homeroom class received a free breakfast, courtesy of the Administration, and a commemorative ribbon. This year Ms. Montenegro’s class is the winning homeroom class. Congratulations! CCHA Historical Studies, 70 (2004), 111-130 The Culture of Catholic Women’s Colleges at the University of Toronto 1911-19251 Elizabeth M. SMYTH From the 1847 arrival of members of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) (The Loretto Sisters), women religious have played an active and a diverse role in a variety of educational ins- titutions for Ontario’s children and youth. By the turn of the century, schools run by orders of women religious were present in both urban and rural Ontario, with many of the congregations using their Ontario mother houses to establish missions across Canada (and by early twentieth century, around the world). What is evident from a review of the historical record is the extent to which communities of women religious responded to the changing needs of the times. Their invol- vement and leadership in education (broadly defined) altered their members and their governance structures as well as the larger religious and secular domains in which they worshiped and lived. This article is part of a course of research on women religious and education. It explores this topic through the lens of the culture of IBVM’s Loretto College and the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph of Toronto’s (CSJ) St Joseph’s College, the two Catholic women’s colleges at the University of Toronto. The argument is put forth that the two women’s colleges worked effectively to create a space for themselves, their faculty, and their students within both the secular and religious communities of the University of Toronto.

  • Vision of a Loretto Student
Join the Legacy of the Loretto Sisters FROM THE EARLIEST YEARS of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM), our founder, Mary Ward, and her companions engaged in the works of education, particularly education of women—no easy feat in the 1600s! The five Loretto Sisters who first came to Toronto from Ireland in 1847 opened the first Loretto School in North America with nine initial boarders. The traditional “free school” for the children of St. Paul’s Parish followed soon after. The Loretto Sisters became “There is no such difference between known for excellence in education and went on to establish men and women that women private schools in various areas of Ontario. Schools were may not do great things… established in Toronto, Guelph, Niagara Falls, Hamilton, and women in time to come will do much.” Lindsay and in Sedley, Saskatchewan. ~ Mary Ward After the Separate School Act of 1863, the Loretto Sisters went out daily to teach in a variety of urban and rural Separate Schools throughout Ontario and Saskatchewan. TODAY, the IBVM ministry of education continues to evolve in response to the needs of the times. Loretto Sisters continue to be educators in very diverse settings; these include: Education for justice, peace and integrity of creation, Educating for personal growth and leadership through workshops and presentations in various community and parish settings, Serving the Catholic Community as Diocesan Directors of Religious Education, Teaching in University and Seminary settings, Educating for Christian formation through RCIA and scripture study, Teaching English as a second language to refugees and newcomers to Canada LORETTO COLLEGE SCHOOL is very proud to be part of this over 400 year educational legacy and are proud to be partnered in sisterhood with over 100 schools worldwide.
