2 // UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME The Greater China Scholars program is a key part of the University of Notre Dame’s expanding commitment to internationalization, which includes developing international partnerships, supporting faculty research, and providing students with unparalleled learning experiences, both on the Notre Dame campus and internationally.

Like other peer universities with an international reputation, the University of Notre Dame attracts potential undergraduate students from around the world who have already demonstrated the highest caliber of academic excellence. But while success in the classroom is critical, it is not the only criterion for admission to the University. Notre Dame looks for students who also will contribute to the University community with their strength of character, capacity for leadership, and commitment to the common good.

Through the Greater China Scholars program, the University is able to identify and provide support to high-achieving and hard-working students who, building on these core attributes and competencies, can most benefit from the unique Notre Dame experience.

As students, these young scholars are immersed in the University’s academic and residential life. In countless ways, they enrich the campus community by sharing their experiences, perspectives, and ideas. After graduation, they continue to engage with the Notre Dame family as members of our international alumni network. They also go on to distinguish themselves in the community more broadly as civic and business leaders.

I am genuinely proud to witness the many ways in which this program helps the Greater China Scholars and the entire University, my own alma mater, to flourish.

I am also grateful to the alumni, parents, and foundations for recognizing the importance of this scholarship program and contributing so generously to its success.

In gratitude,

Thomas G. Burish Charles and Jill Fischer Provost

The summer before coming to Notre Dame, she joined the Outward Bound Program and went canoeing in Boundary Waters at U.S. northern border. Together with other merit scholars at Notre Dame, she immersed herself in backcountry, learned and mastered canoeing, portaged 70-pound boat on her own, camped, and dealt with emergency situations like boats tipping over. Through nature, she further understood the meaning of life during solo time and group sharing time, and built a strong relationship with fellow teammates.

"The most memorable moment was when we woke up at 2am to paddle. In the silent darkness we journeyed on towards the sky gradually staining with the iridescent color. At that precise moment the sun rose, our hearts were filled with living passion. We gave thanks silently to our beloved people and realized that we were stronger than we had thought." – YIXIAN “ASHLEE” FU, CLASS OF 2021

GREATER CHINA SCHOLARS PROGRAM // 27 First-Year Ethical Leadership Course

All first-year scholars are required to take the one-credit Ethical Leadership Course, which is a lecture and discussion series on the meaning of ethical leadership and the intellectual relationship between interdisciplinary scholarship and effective public service. The lecture and discussion series featuring distinguished guest speakers from the university, senior merit scholars, the broader academy, and the local community encourages scholars to become interdisciplinary thinkers and collaborative leaders across their diverse fields of study.

28 // UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME “The Ethical Leadership Course was memorable, fruitful, and touched my heart. The lecture I found most interesting was a session on global inequality. The speaker illustrated how unfair the world could be, comparing African countries to more developed countries like the States and countries in Europe. The discussion illustrated how important the role of education is in shaping a world of equality. Another memorable session was the meeting with Father Jenkins, President of the University. It is a very precious opportunity to be able to meet Father Jenkins in person. He offered a lot of insights on the Notre Dame education. The class reminded me the most important reason of why I came to Notre Dame—the sense of a community and family. “

– NATALIE YING, CLASS OF 2021

30 // UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME “I was looking forward to experiencing community service before I came to Notre Dame. After I learned about the Robinson Center through the first-year Ethical Leadership Course, I jumped at the opportunity of tutoring children from local primary school every Monday and Tuesday afternoon. It ended up being one of the most enjoyable times for me. One semester of the experience with the kids makes me realize that community service is not only doing something for the community but also being one of them. Now I am a member of the community. Community service is a process of mutual learning and growing more than just a unilateral dedication.”

– RUNZHI “TOM” SONG, CLASS OF 2021

34 // UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME "As one of the judges for selecting the inaugural Greater China Scholarship class, I immensely enjoyed my interactions with these extremely accomplished young women and men. I still remember meeting Huili Chen, a member of this class, the day before her first semester at Notre Dame. Like many new students, she was overwhelmed by all the choices that she had to make. We spoke for quite some time about her intended major, her personal interests, academic strengths and aspirations. Eventually, she became a student in my department and was a superstar all the way to her graduation and joining MIT as a graduate student. I am sure such stories can be told for many of the GCS recipients."

– XIAOBO SHARON HU PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

48 // UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME 2011-2018 GREATER CHINA SCHOLARS REPRESENTATIVES Huili Chen

My name is Huili Chen. I graduated from Notre Dame in 2016 with bachelor’s degrees in computer science and psychology, and a minor in peace studies. I grew up in Guizhou, China, where I attended Guiyang No. 6 High School.

At Notre Dame, I volunteered in multiple economically underprivileged areas in the world. In 2012, I, along with four other ND students, co-founded Notre Dame's first social service program in Guizhou and explored how to promote ethnic and cultural diversity in Guizhou. This service learning program has now been administered by Notre Dame International and the Center for Social Concerns for five consecutive years.

In the 2014 Spring Semester, I studied abroad at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. In addition, I volunteered in a wildlife sanctuary in Costa Rica for one month. Upon graduation, I went to rural Zambia and interned for Impact Network, a US-based organization dedicated to improving rural education in Africa.

I am now a fully-funded graduate student at the MIT Media Lab, working on interdisciplinary research that integrates technology, artificial intelligence, psychology and education with the ultimate goal of addressing global literacy issues. I also became a fellow of SEED Social Innovation at Harvard in 2017 to explore how to use technologies and big data to accelerate social innovation in China.

50 // UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME 2011-2018 GREATER CHINA SCHOLARS REPRESENTATIVES Nicole Cheng

I am beginning my journey as a science-business major here at Notre Dame. I also intend on double-majoring in sociology.

In high school, I was captain of the varsity soccer and touch rugby teams, as well as a member of the softball and track teams all four years. I was also president of the Operation Smile and Interact clubs, which fostered collaborative learning between younger and older students at my school. Since growing in my Christian faith is very important to me, I volunteered at my church’s weekly children’s bible program and lead a high-school youth group. Additionally, I was a member of the French Honour Society and Tri-M Music Honour Society.

In the few months that I’ve been here as a freshman at Notre Dame, I have been keeping myself busy with club boxing and rugby, and co-recreational soccer. I am a NDIgnite student ambassador for prospective students, a commissioner-in-training for the Spirit Committee in Ryan Hall (Go Wildcats!), as well as an active member at ISI, a Christian fellowship group, where I help lead worship. As I settle in to this busy new environment, I am still looking out for more opportunities to get involved with more charitable and student- led organizations! In the upcoming years, I look forward to utilizing all these resources that I’ve been offered here—I hope to study abroad and get involved with research and service projects. I can’t wait to continue on my journey here. I am so grateful that God has lead me here, where I believe that I not only belong, but will also learn and grow in all aspects of my life!

My name is Xinhui Hong from Dongguan, . I am a sophomore majoring in International Economics with Spanish and minoring in Education, Schooling and Society.

At Notre Dame, through the resources offered by the Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars Program and Greater China Scholars Program, I intend to explore my passion in education through traveling to different countries. In the first semester at Notre Dame, I joined Take Ten, a volunteer teaching program educating school children on conflict resolution and violence prevention. During Thanksgiving break, I traveled to Beijing as a delegate for the Yenching Social Innovation Forum hosted by the Yenching Academy of Peking University and participated in a 3-day forum on the theme of “Bridging China’s Education Gap.” In my first year, as a member of FUEL, the branch of the Student Government for first year students, and the Center for Social Concerns, I had the chance to be involved in hosting events at Notre Dame.

This summer, I had the opportunity to spend eight weeks in Quito, Ecuador, working with UBECI, an Ecuadorian non-profit organization committed to serving low-income children and their families in Quito and surrounding rural areas. As a volunteer in the Street Children Program, each day I would travel to ferias (open-air day markets), help set up an open space with tents and toys, and assist in recreational and educational activities for children of street vendors and market workers.

I have been extremely blessed to join the Notre Dame family. I hope, through my education here at Notre Dame, that I will be a blessing to others as well.

54 // UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME 2011-2018 GREATER CHINA SCHOLARS REPRESENTATIVES Nicole Lee

I am beginning my journey at Notre Dame this fall as a recipient of the Greater China Scholars Program. I’ve always been attracted to the University’s excellent academic reputation; and as I come from a competitive high school, I wanted to attend a university that would continue to push me to be better. I was elected to the role of head prefect by the faculty at my high school and also served as an ambassador for the school in several other roles, including the captain of the underwater robotics team and the alto section leader of my school’s chamber choir. I consider myself a compassionate, encouraging and inspiring leader, and would love to further develop my leadership abilities at Notre Dame.

While I was undoubtedly attracted to the academic opportunities, I really fell in love with Notre Dame’s sense of community. I grew up an only child, and thus have always longed for the opportunity to find a sense of belonging and to form lifelong relationships with my peers. Although it’s no secret that Notre Dame attracts only the best professors in the field, Notre Dame also attracts the best students from around the world; it is an honor to know that I will be learning right alongside them for the next four years.

I intend to use my Notre Dame education as a platform for personal growth and education, as well as to give back to the community. I know the University strives not just to educate you academically, but to develop you to become a better person. As part of that, my plan is to use my education to fully explore all my personal and academic interests. I am inquisitive by nature, and have never shied away from asking the hard questions; I intend to become a journalist or a documentarian. I would like to use my platform as a journalist to raise awareness on key issues around the globe, as well as to effect change in the world around us. I believe that a Notre Dame education is the first vital step in helping me achieve this goal.

I am from Shenyang. I graduated from the University of Notre Dame in May 2016 with a degree in computer science. I am currently an MD candidate at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

At Notre Dame, I discovered my interest in medicine. I developed a passion for medical research through working with professors from the Departments of Computer Science and Biology. I spent all my summers in college working in research labs both on and off campus. I also gained valuable experiences through volunteering in both medical and non-medical settings. I worked in the First Aid Service Team during home football games starting my freshman year. I volunteered in hospitals as well as hospice house. I also worked as a mentor for the robotics team at Washington High School in South Bend. I found these experiences extremely rewarding. I believe that my desire to pursue a career in medicine has grown stronger through my academic and volunteering experiences.

After graduating college in 2016, I spent a year conducting research on pediatric brain tumors at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. In July 2017, I started school at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. I am very excited about applying the knowledge I learned at Notre Dame and beyond to patient care as well as medical research.

My name is Yutong Liu. I am originally from Beijing, China, and I am currently a junior at the University of Notre Dame studying biological science, philosophy, and philosophy political science and economics (PPE).

The last two years I have spent here at Notre Dame have been inspiring and exciting. During my freshman year, I was able to conduct research on zebra fish renal-regeneration and facilitate the construction of a smart phone based palliative care data collection system in Uganda. Over my sophomore year, I studied childhood lead poisoning in the communities of South Bend, Indiana. Working with different stakeholders including the St. Joseph County Health Department and local community organizations, a small team made up of faculty and students from different disciplines including myself tackled problems surrounding lead source testing, reporting, and abatement. Partnering with the local community of South Bend taught me the importance of community involvement in public health research/intervention and allowed me to recognize the vitality of South Bend as a developing city.

Today, I serve as a student manager and team leader for the Take Ten program, which endeavors to empower children and adults with resolution skills. I am also a member of the Senior Leadership Committee of the biology department, serving to improve the biology major.

At Notre Dame, I was not only inspired intellectually in the classroom, I was challenged to engage with communities and real life problems. I am very grateful for the opportunities Notre Dame has offered me.

I’m Ruilin “Lynn” Sang from Shanghai. I plan to major in English, but I’m also interested in political science, economics and education.

In high school, I was a student leader in the Student Union and a board member. Also, out of my passion for poetry, I established the first poetry club in my school. As a volunteer of Special Olympics, I tutored in local special education schools and taught students about simple poetry and writing; surrounded by poetic voices, we together learn to embrace the world in an uplifting way.

Here at Notre Dame, I can always find people sharing my passions in art, literature and service; and I can continue what I used to do. During the first semester, I worked in the selection committee of “The Juggler”—a literature and art magazine on campus. I especially enjoy reading the poems submitted, and I feel a kind of genuine excitement when I try to understand the messages of the authors. I also joined the Notre Dame Chorale and performed in its concerts. In terms of service, I became a member of Circle K, and have visited several organizations to play with special needs children. Besides, as a member of the Special Friends organization, I have been paired up with a special needs girl of my age; I’m so glad to have established a close bond with her since her cheerfulness has also made me feel enthusiastic about life. Also I’m currently a member of the Student Union Board and CSSA committee. I look forward to planning more student activities next semester as I enjoy serving people around me.

I am from Hong Kong and am currently a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame. I am pursuing a degree in Computer Science with a concentration in Distributed Computing.

When I was in Island School, I was part of two organizations which fundraised for New Sight Congo. I led a student-based charity organization I2Eye and organized a variety of fundraising events. Additionally, I was the head of finance in the Rainbow Trek Committee which organizes a 25/50km hike every year for the juniors in high school to raise funds.

Currently, I am a Teaching Assistant for the Discrete Mathematics course in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. I am also working as a Research Assistant in the Social Sensing Lab, developing a distributed system with a graduate student to analyze YouTube Live Streams to detect copyright infringement. In this coming summer, I will be interning at Microsoft as a Software Development Engineer.

Notre Dame has given me a tremendous college experience through which I will thrive in and cherish every moment of it. I hope that by the end of my four years, I will not only be equipped with engineering skills but also have developed as a well-rounded person.

66 // UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME 2011-2018 GREATER CHINA SCHOLARS REPRESENTATIVES Qingling Wang

My name is Qingling Wang, and I was born and raised in Beijing, China. Notre Dame, with its rich international opportunities, strong academic support, and wide extra-curricular selection, has empowered me to pursue my dream of becoming a liaison between the East and the West.

On campus, I served as an International Ambassador, working with foreign students. In addition, my interest in business and commerce led me to examine accounting and consulting case studies. Beyond campus, I seized cross-cultural opportunities, including business case competitions in Canada and China, summer school in Israel, and an exchange program in England.

While I was studying abroad at the University of Oxford, I worked for the Student Consultancy and completed a consulting challenge with students from different countries. Interested in international business and financial markets as well, I conducted research on American cross-border trade legislation as well as banking regulatory systems in the United States and the United Kingdom.

In conversations between the East and the West, I see three major impediments: language, culture and law. Notre Dame has helped me work through the first two. Currently a student at Harvard Law School, I am exploring career opportunities that would allow me to contribute to conversations between China and the United States. The skills and values I acquired from Notre Dame continue to support me in this journey.

68 // UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME 2011-2018 GREATER CHINA SCHOLARS REPRESENTATIVES Zihao Xiong

I am currently a junior studying Finance, Applied Math, and Japanese at the Mendoza School of Business.

Notre Dame offers a wide range of exciting academic choices and has been guiding me in exploring my passion since my freshman year. I can always feel mentally and intellectually motivated in- and outside the classroom. During school years, through the Student International Business Council I was able to apply the skills we learned in simulated business cases. With ND International’s assistance, I studied abroad in Italy during my freshman summer, volunteered at Italy Missionary of Charity and researched on the Ancient Rome inflation.

Thanks to my Japanese major as well as sponsorship from the Liu Institute for Asia & Asian Studies, I had the opportunity to work with Oracle Japan in Tokyo for six weeks during my sophomore summer, to explore the multinational tech giant’s Japanese business branch and the fantastic cultural and modern life of Tokyo. In summer 2018, I interned at J.P. Morgan in New York for 9 weeks with the asset-backed securities investment banking.

I believe Notre Dame will lead me to explore more in the coming years and leave an everlasting positive influence on my life.

70 // UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME 2011-2018 GREATER CHINA SCHOLARS REPRESENTATIVES Zhian Yin 印智安

My name is Zhian Yin. My intended major is Architecture. As Notre Dame offers one of the best classical architecture programs in the country, I am looking forward to my five-year journey ahead.

In high school, I spent a year in Germany as an exchange student. There I attended Gymnasium Hankensbuettel in Lower Saxony, where I gained extensive knowledge about German language and its culture. Coincidentally enough, the year of 2015 was also the year when the refugee crisis hit Europe the hardest. As large numbers of refugees were storming into mainland Europe, Germany became the ultimate destination for many. Cities all over Germany started to accommodate refugees to avoid overcrowding. The town of my school, Hankensbuettel was no exception. I so joined a group of volunteers organized by school. We helped the refugee children in the nearby area to adjust to their new lives in Germany, as we also taught them basic German and played soccer with them.

Now at the University, I continue to search for the opportunities to serve. Starting from the first semester of my freshmen year, I work as a volunteer tutor at the Robinson Community Center, an institution established to help children from South Bend with their academic progress. I am also excited about the incoming opportunity for me to volunteer in Guizhou, as I am accepted to the ISSLP programs that are provided by the University. Hopefully in the future, I can utilize more resources provided by the University and engage in more domestic and international service.

My name is Zhixing Zhang. I am from Beijing.

I graduated magna cum laude in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and History. As a mathematics major, I enjoyed and benefited tremendously from exploring fundamental and analytical mathematical principles. I also completed an honors thesis on Medieval/Early Modern East Asian History under the supervision of Professor Julia Adeney Thomas. In my junior year summer, I received generous research funding from the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, and the Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement to travel to Japan and Korea to conduct archival and field research towards my thesis, which won the department’s 2017 Best Senior Honors Thesis Award.

In terms of extracurricular activities, I served as Vice President of the Notre Dame History Club for two years, an international ambassador at the International Student and Scholars Affairs, an officer in the Notre Dame Chinese Student and Scholar Association, and a tutor at the Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures from my sophomore year through senior year.

I am currently studying at Stanford Law School, where I hope to continue researching the divergence and balance between the East and the West.

In addition to business, I did a volunteering internship at the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office last year, where I assisted in the non-profit legal aid process for child abuse and domestic violence victims. For the three past summers, the Greater China Scholarship and Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars Program (HYSP) have inspired and supported me to explore the world, reflect on my passion, and give back to local communities. In the summer of my freshman year, I traveled to Ecuador and interned for an economic empowerment non-profit called Social Entrepreneur Corps. The summer after my sophomore year, I traveled to Panama and did a case study on the local mining industry. I spent the past summer in New York City, working in the investment banking division at J.P. Morgan as a Summer Analyst. I will work as a full-time investment banking analyst at J.P. Morgan in New York after graduation.

By making a Notre Dame education experience possible for exceptionally qualified Chinese students, donors to the Greater China Scholars Program bring a level of prestige and recognition to the recipient’s college career. For these students, the opportunity to attend a Top 20 university might not otherwise be possible. For Notre Dame, the ability to attract these young leaders increases in direct proportion to the funding available for the Program.

Donors may make one-time contributions or they may endow at various funding levels the scholarships, cultural and academic enrichment experiences, and intentionally designed leadership programming. Endowments will be named at the donor’s behest, and additional appropriate recognition will be offered with the donor’s consent. Donors will experience University-level stewardship as well as bespoke experiences, which may include the listing of a benefactor’s name on campus, invitations to special recognition events, annual reports, and regular correspondence with recipients.
