Caste-Based Oppression and the Class Struggle TU Senan CWI-India
Caste-based Oppression and the Class Struggle TU Senan CWI -India 24 December 2014 Leave a comment In 2013, the British government agreed to include caste- based discrimination as an amendment to the Equality Act (2010). An alliance of Tory MPs and caste-based ‘community leaders’, however, successfully stalled its implementation to after the general election. What is behind this opposition? What role does caste play, both in South Asia and Britain? Why is it an important issue for socialists today? The caste system in South Asia is one of the cruellest forms of oppression that exists today. Cold-blooded murder, sexual violence, untouchability, bonded slavery and other feudal forms of horrific discrimination are used against people from the most oppressed caste. People challenging this oppression face brutal violence, including being driven from traditional lands or the burning down of whole villages. More than half-a-billion people in India are subjected to discrimination based on their caste, which is determined by hereditary membership and marriage within the caste. Higher castes dominate certain professions, businesses, etc. Beneath this hierarchical system are more than 200 million (Dalits and others) who face the most severe forms of discrimination. Traditional castes cut across class and class loyalties, although the leaders of the higher castes are a significant component of the ruling class. Caste oppression is also present in other parts of the world where South Asians live, travelling with the migrations of populations over time. From Malaysia to Europe, caste divisions have been maintained. At least half-a- million people of South Asian descent face caste-based discrimination in Britain. -

A. in Indian Studies, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran ([email protected]) (Received: Jan. 2, 2019 Revised: Feb. 28, 2019 Accepted: Ma r. 28, 2019) Abstract This study investigates the representations of Hindu-Muslim relationship in Bollywood movies from 2008 to 2018. It is assumed that after 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which are known as 26/11, conflicts between Hindus and Muslims have escalated. Since Indian people are extreme fans of movies, especially Bollywood movies, in this regard, it is expected that media could play a significant role in increasing or alleviating the conflicts by influencing people’s attitudes and opinions. This research seeks to examine the extent and modality of the representation of Hindu-Muslim relationships in Bollywood after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The study was conducted through a content analysis of 11 Bollywood movies, which were selected from 70 Muslim-characters-based movies. Favorable, unfavorable, neutral and unclear were the four factors through which the movies’ contents were analyzed. The overall analysis of these factors indicate that 66.17% of the scenes were favorable, 14.70% were unfavorable, 2.94% were neutral, and 16.17% presented unclear images of Hindu-Muslim relationship in Bollywood movies. -

Silence and Memory: Violence Against Women During the Partition of 1947
SILENCE AND MEMORY: VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN DURING THE PARTITION OF 1947 Pronoma Debnath TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin December 2016 __________________________________________ Syed Akbar Hyder Department of South Asian Studies Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Michael Anderson Department of International Relations Second Reader 1 2 ABSTRACT Author: Pronoma Debnath Title: Silence and Memory: Violence Against Women During the Partition of 1947 Supervising Professors: Syed Akbar Hyder, Michael Anderson For my thesis, I am focusing on the abduction, dissimulation, and recovery of women during the Partition of India in 1947. Women were used as political tools between various religious groups during the tumultuous violence of Partition, and one of the ways this manipulation manifested itself was through the abduction of women from one religious community by men from another community. Women often assimilated into the new community, dissimulating from their previous identity and adopting a new culture. Later, the governments of both India and Pakistan attempted to reclaim the women as a way of creating a national identity. Women were also violated by men from their own communities, a violence that has traditionally been overlooked. The threads of sexuality and identity make talking about this period and these particular events very difficult, and many women who lived through these experiences have remained quiet, a silence that is important to discuss. This silence also affects the collective and individual memory of Partition. Narratives are created to emphasize or erase violence in the midst of this silence, and this affects our perceptions of Partition. This thesis will present the abduction of women during Partition in the context of a legacy of British colonialism, as well as the ramifications of the event for South Asia today. -
