  • Towards a Muslim Poetics of Nature*
    * preprint version; forthcoming in a volume on religion and ecology edited by Munjed Murad Towards a Muslim Poetics of Nature Mohammed Rustom I would like to begin with an autobiographical account which takes us back to the fall of 2000, when I was a secondyear undergraduate student at the University of Toronto. Like many of my classmates in philosophy, I had a fairly naïve understanding of what I was doing studying this discipline. I would eventually come to learn that there were different kinds of traditions of philosophy, and where one would end up focusing really had to do with a number of factors, not least one’s interests, predilections, and ultimate concerns. But, in the fall of 2000, as I sat in a very popular course on Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, such things were not entirely clear to me. I signed up for the course, to be honest, because the two authors who were its focus had names that sounded “cool.” The course description promised to give students a sense of the important and enduring themes in Kierkegaard and Nietzsche’s writings—themes which, in one way or another, helped define a number of pressing problems in several contemporary forms of philosophy. Little did I know that the course would be a catalyst for something else, and that in a profound way. One day, through the lens of Nietzsche, the professor was passiveaggressively emphasizing how there is no such thing as truth, how everything is an interpretation largely governed by contexts and received canons of understanding, etc.

SP Publications International Journal Of English and Studies (IJOES) An International Peer-Reviewed English Journal www.ijoes.in Vol-1, Issue-4, 2019 ISSN: 2581-8333 Indexed in ________________________________________________________________ GHAZAL: JOURNEY FROM PERSIAN TO ENGLISH ______________________________________________________________________________ Dr. R.P. Singh Professor of English University of Lucknow-226007 ______________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: It is an informative paper on the construct, form, and expansion of Ghazal as a poetic form. The origin of the word ‘Ghazal' goes back to the Arabic word ‘Ghazal' meaning ‘deer' in English. The reference finds roots to the act of hunting a deer. When a hunter shoots a deer in a moonlit night in the Arabian desert, the deer getting pierced with the arrow, runs around helplessly in search of water. In this state, the throat makes the sound like "gaz - gaz". A lover, in the same way, pines for his beloved, and feels emotional bleeding; this leads to the making of Ghazal. The paper discusses various aspects of Ghazal. Key Words: Ghazal, Sher, Matla, Takhallus. The Ghazal is a Persian word referring to a form of Persian poetry. It became popular in Urdu literature later. It is, generally speaking, a form of poetic expression describing platonic love. The locale, tone, and content –almost everything around Ghazal find a lover and his unattained love as the central concern. The narrator almost knows it too well that the meeting of the lovers is unattainable, yet they keep striving till the last. This pang and desire emanate into the verses of Ghazal. The complete Ghazal comprise of Shers (couplets); most of the Ghazal has less than fifteen shers, A good Ghazal has approximately five Shers.

In a thorough analysis of these works, readers find that not only were these prominent authors drawing from Sufi ideals to venerate the Prophet, but also outputting significant propositions and arguments that helped maintain the preservation of Islamic values, and rebuild Muslim culture in a South Asian subcontinent that had been in a state of colonization for centuries.

  • Language, Religion and Politics: Urdu in Pakistan and North India / 93
Language, Religion and Politics: Urdu in Pakistan and North India / 93 Tariq Rahman* Language, Religion and Politics: Urdu in Pakistan and North India Résumé.

Specifically, the work explores “fatwas” and “other” similar documents as well as “guidance” documents (referred to as FOGs) that were disseminated in March–April 2020 on the internet and social media platforms for British Muslim consumption. We confine our materials to FOGs produced only in English. Our study takes its cue from the notion that the existence of a variety of documents created a sense of foggy ambiguity for British Muslims in matters of religious practice. From a linguistic angle, the study seeks to identify (a) the underlying reasons behind the titling of the documents; and (b) the construction of discourses in the documents. Our corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis (CA-CDA) found noticeable patterns that hold symbolic capital in the fatwa register. We also found that producers of “other” documents imitate the fatwa register in an attempt to strengthen the symbolic capital of their documents.
