Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Aber dieser schwarze Musiker ist nicht wegzudenken für das, was seit den 1960er Jahren dann als Bluesrock firmierte. Musiker wie Keith Richards, John Mayall oder auch Eric Clapton sind vor dieser Gitarre ehrfürchtig niedergekniet, auch wenn die wenigen erhaltenen Aufnahmen Jahrzehnte zuvor entstanden waren – die Rede ist von Robert Johnson, dem 1911 im US-Staat Mississippi geborenen Gitarristen, Sänger und Komponisten, der nach nur 27 Jahren verstarb – Giftmord? Syphilis? Todesursache offen – die Legenden ranken. Dazu gleich mehr – hier ist Robert Johnson, der King des schwarzen Delta-Blues, mit seiner Komposition „Love In Vain“ – ein ziemlich bitteres Liebeslied, live eingespielt bei einer Aufnahmesession im Jahr 1937: 01 Robert Johnson: Love In vain 05:00 ➢ Robert Johnson – an ihm ist wohl keiner der später und bis heute dem Blues verfallenen Musiker vorbeigekommen. -

Their hard work made this endeavor successful. ii Abstract The following project attempted to design and manufacture a wooden photo album. The final product needed to fully satisfy customer demands as well as turn a profit. The development proceeded in two phases. The design phase sought to take the product from ideation to a fully viable final design for manufacturing. The manufacturing phase sought to create a production process that would both meet customer demands in an efficient and waste-free way. This would be accomplished by implementing principles of Project Management, Toyota Production System, and LEAN. The final product was successfully designed and produced to be a high-end oak photo album with leather and brass accenting. -

George Michael was Britain’s biggest pop star of the 1980s, first with the duo Wham! and then as a solo artist. The Three Crowns played a small but significant part in his story. After Wham! made their initial chart breakthrough with the single Young Guns (Go for It) in 1982, George’s songwriting gift brought them giant hits including Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Freedom, and they became leading lights of the 80s boom in British pop music, alongside Duran Duran, Culture Club and Spandau Ballet, even exporting it behind the Iron Curtain. His first solo album Faith, released in 1987, sold 25 million copies, and George sold more than 100 million albums worldwide with Wham! and under his own name. George was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in Finchley, north London. His father, Kyriacos Panayiotou, was a Greek Cypriot restaurateur, and his mother an English dancer, Lesley Angold. In the late 1960s the family moved to Edgware, where George attended Kingsbury School, before they moved to the affluent Hertfordshire town of Radlett in the mid-1970s. Lal Waterson, Carthy’s sister-in- law, bandmate, near neighbor and close friend, died of cancer.
