  • Listening to Movies: Film Music and the American Composer Charles Elliston Long Middle School INTRODUCTION I Entered College
Listening to Movies: Film Music and the American Composer Charles Elliston Long Middle School INTRODUCTION I entered college a naïve 18-year-old musician. I had played guitar for roughly four years and was determined to be the next great Texas blues guitarist. However, I was now in college and taking the standard freshman music literature class. Up to this point the most I knew about music other than rock or blues was that Beethoven was deaf, Mozart composed as a child, and Chopin wrote a really cool piano sonata in B-flat minor. So, we’re sitting in class learning about Berlioz, and all of the sudden it occurred to me: are there any composers still working today? So I risked looking silly and raised my hand to ask my professor if there were composers that were still working today. His response was, “Of course!” In discussing modern composers, the one medium that continuously came up in my literature class was that of film music. It occurred to me then that I knew a lot of modern orchestral music, even though I didn’t really know it. From the time when I was a little kid, I knew the name of John Williams. Some of my earliest memories involved seeing such movies as E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Empire Strikes Back. My father was a musician, so I always noted the music credit in the opening credits. All of those films had the same composer, John Williams. Of course, I was only eight years old at the time, so in my mind I thought that John Williams wrote all the music for the movies.

MC5's Wayne Kramer, Motorhead and The Sex Pistols Modernize Iconic Sound With Re- Recorded Tracks for Guitar Hero(R) World Tour 40 Years Later, Wayne Kramer, Joined By Jerry Cantrell of Alice and Chains and Gilby Clark Formerly of Guns 'N' Roses, Brings Back 'Kick Out the Jams' for Guitar Hero World Tour SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept 03, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Guitar Hero(R) fans will have a unique opportunity to unleash their inner rockstar as they come together and kick out some jams with exclusive re-records by MC5's Wayne Kramer, Motorhead and The Sex Pistols in Activision Publishing, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: ATVI) Guitar Hero(R) World Tour. Just shy of the 40th anniversary of the seminal performance in October 1968 when "Kick Out the Jams" was originally recorded, founder and lead guitarist Wayne Kramer went back into the recording studio with original producer Bruce Botnick to re-record the track exclusively for Guitar Hero World Tour. Featuring the vocals recorded by Rob Tyner in 1968, Wayne Kramer was joined by friends Jerry Cantrell of Alice and Chains and Gilby Clark formerly of Guns 'N' Roses -- at The Woodshed Recorder, studio of composer and ex-Oingo Boingo keyboardist Richard Gibbs -- to update and modernize the sound without taking away from the original visceral garage sound that made MC5 famous and helped start the Punk Rock revolution. Last year when they re-recorded "Anarchy in the U.K." as a Guitar Hero exclusive, fellow Punk Rock band The Sex Pistols - with original members John Lydon on vocals, guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and producer Chris Thomas - also re- recorded "Pretty Vacant" utilizing the original analog sound board (circa 1969) that was built for George Martin at Air Studios, London, England in order to maintain the classic sound.

  • Danny Elfman: Batman Returns Birth of a Penguin Part 1, Birth of a Penguin Part 2, Batman Vs the Circus, the Rise and Fall from Grace (For Component 3: Appraising)
Danny Elfman: Batman Returns Birth of a Penguin Part 1, Birth of a Penguin Part 2, Batman vs the Circus, The Rise and Fall from Grace (For component 3: Appraising) Background information and performance circumstances The composer Danny Elfman (b. 1953) is a self-taught composer and is unusual because of his parallel career as a rock musician with the band Oingo Boingo. He grew up in Los Angeles and is the youngest son of two teachers. While at school, Elfman wanted to be a filmmaker. ‘I always thought that some way or other I’d end up in film, but somehow I ended up in music.’ Tim Burton and Elfman had a close working relationship and collaborated on a number of films including Beetlejuice (1988), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and Planet of the Apes (2001). Of all the films they have made together, Batman remained Elfman’s biggest grossing film until Spider-man (2002). More importantly, Batman brought Elfman to public attention and established him as a creditable film composer. Elfman often scores much of his music around leitmotifs then develops them through the use of variations. The use of thematic development illustrates Elfman’s influences from composers such as Bernard Herrman (Psycho, 1960) from the Golden Age of films. Having established the main materials of the score, Elfman works through the film chronologically, using the materials he has developed in a manner which is extremely unmethodical. Batman Returns (1992) is the sequel to Batman (1989), directed by Tim Burton with Michael Keaton reprising the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

  • Public Comment
From: To: FN-OMB-IntellectualProperty Subject: Save us please!! Date: Wednesday, March 24, 2010 2:56:23 PM To Ms. Victoria Espinel - and anybody else who will listen, Bona fides: I am a successful composer for film (over fifty movies with worldwide grosses of well over a billion dollars) and television (many hit shows). I was also a member of the band Oingo Boingo and worked as a session player on hundreds of albums. I own a state of the art recording studio and continue to work as a composer and occasionally as a record producer. Filesharing has allowed the entire world to enjoy – without paying - the fruits of the labors of countless creators of intellectual property. Yet there are hundreds of huge corporations around the globe that profit from charging the public for the means to steal (fileshare) music. Those companies are not held responsible for their actions (or inactions, as the case may be). The recording industry has been absolutely decimated as a result. Singers, engineers, songwriters, producers, trombonists, you name it – they have all had their livelihoods snatched from them by the seeming largesse of the telecom/internet industry and the disinterest and tacit approval of governments around the world. It is quite possible to share the massive profits of those industries with the creators of music – even easy to do – but for some reason those companies just don’t want to share. The number one and number two most profitable exports of the United States are arms (guns, tanks, fighters jets, bombs) and entertainment (movies, TV, music, sports).
