OINGO BOINGO tribute band Reptiles and Samurai plays the Oriental Theater With special guests (TBA) and a multimedia experience featuring cult classic films ‘Back To School’ & ‘Weird Science’

DENVER — Featuring a lineup of some of the most sought-after and talented musicians in Denver, Reptiles and Samurai — the Mile High’s only Oingo Boingo tribute act — is ready for prime time, and this show looks to be an instant classic. The 9-piece act debuted last spring at a private event hosted at the Owl Saloon in Denver, and was an instant fan-favorite among the wall-to-wall crowd.

“That was really fantastic,” said Bobby Figueroa, former drummer for the legendary Beach Boys (he replaced Dennis Wilson when the founding member suffered a hand injury) whose band California Surf Inc. performed earlier in the evening. “The horns were really tight, and your singer’s great! Hell, the whole band was really tight!”

…As should be expected. The collection of musicians on stage could easily be called a Colorado super group, and includes:

“It’s back-to-school season,” said Trombonist David Flomberg, who hand-selected the group of players for this tribute project, “and that gave us a great opportunity to put together a show to appeal to the New Wave fan in all of us.” Originally formed for the one-off event at the Owl, Flomberg decided the final project was too good to be shelved. “First off, Elfman’s a goddamned musical genius, and the guys put in way too much work building arrangements and learning the music for the show to just play once. Secondly, this band is so much fun to play with — it’s filled with straight-up musical assassins.

“And every Oingo Boingo fan loves the movies Back To School and Weird Science because the band appeared in those flicks, so we added a multimedia element to this show with Vee-Jay John Heenan, who’ll be ‘scratching’ video clips on the big screen at the Oriental.”

Oriental Theater co-owner and booker Andy Bercaw echoed the excitement. “If the draw is as solid as we expect it to be, I could see turning this into an annual event. I’ve played with a lot of these guys myself in other projects, and I can vouch for the talent on that stage. This’ll be a blast.”
