Material Required for Walky Park Container

As you probably know we have purchased a 40 ft container in which to store our equipment. The container currently sits on the ground at Walky Park, which will eventually cause it to rust through. We are going to put it up on concrete blocks (to allow airflow underneath). We want to put some rubber matting in between the concrete and the container. These materials, if purchased new, are very expensive.

Does anyone have contacts where we could get cheap rubber matting (one thought was old conveyer belts)?

If you can help the club, please contact Paul Kinnear on 0438 275 766 or Dave Rudham on 0417 849 712.

Matt and Claire in Tas

Well Claire and I managed to get to the finish of the first Classic Tasmania unlike many others.

Dave McDonough's awesome RS200 was sighted (not by me unfortunately) on the Friday afternoon but disappeared thereafter which left only one other Thoroughbred car - nothing less than the genuine IYK Greg Carr Mk2 Escort.

Jeremy and Diana were stopped on the side of the road at the end of the first timed stage with an engine failure in Jeremy's beautiful works Lancia.

Naomi and Tony Quinn had to retire on the Sunday with gearbox problems.

Other South Aussies faired much better with Roger Patterson taking out the event in what I now appreciate (having driven a similar car) was a brilliant drive and Mark Laucke and Greg Keene (Porsche), Craig Hayman and Neil Gibson (TR8) and Simon from Simax Engineering in Andrew Cavalli's old MK1 RS Escort did very well to win their classes.

For those who haven't been to the Apple Isle, the roads are very challenging with frequent blind crests with no advisory warnings, difficult to predict corner lengths, invariable bumps in braking zones and the local road builders don't seem to have discovered the concept of camber. The scenery is spectacular, the weather impossible to predict.

Add to all this that we were in a rear wheel drive, rear engine car with no ECU, no power steering, no trick diffs, never been driven on any public road before and only driven by me once in the past 18 months for 2 laps of Mallala before the harmonic balancer decided to fall off, we had our work cut out for us.

Thanks to the efforts of Mark Buik, Lance Walker and our faithfull team from NAS we got the Porsche (or PBC as we now fondly call it - don't ask) over the line though.

Can't say we were altogether happy with 10th outright but considering we were plagued with a misfiring engine until Sunday, a gear shift like a stick in a bucket of ...., diabolically stiff suspension producing bump steer that it will take weeks for my arms to recover from and camshafts which make the car useless (other than pure noise) under 6000rpm, the result wasn't too shabby.

Somehow we managed to get the outright stage win on the first run through the Burnie super special on the Sunday arvo so that was a nice way to finish.

I have put some incar up from the famous Hellyer Gorge stage here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwKHf3tXYNw

The footage doesn't really do justice to how steep the descent and climb are, nor how crap my driving was compared to the faster cars nor how LOUD it is in there.

Claire did an amazing job as usual and as proven by the footage. BTW the notes are Steve Glenney and Bernie Webb's handiwork and are brilliant. You may also notice that it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks - I have switched to the 1-10 system.

Now back to the Suby rebuild

B Grade Cars

A bit of History

I have always been attracted to the era and the cars that competed in it. Being an engineer, the freedom to develop a car to its limit was always an appealing thought.

I started rallying in 1980 while still studying mechanical Engineering. It added a year to my 4 year course with the distraction and mucking around of building a car on a miniscule budget and trying to compete ...but it was worth it. The practical skills acquired and the necessity to make something out of nothing, just to go faster certainly helped in the years to come in business.

The fantastic thing about the 80's era was that we were allowed to run Group G cars . This meant that an average guy, with a brain and big balls , could compete against the works cars for a fraction of the cost. It was also very easy for the novice to have a go at a reasonable speed at a cheap price. I shoe horned a 2.6 sigma motor into an early model Galant, which was purchased from the wreckers for $30. The total build cost on the car was $1500 which gave me a grunter engine, a welded diff, home made seats, shocks out of a in the rear and aftermarket strut inserts which were bent straight after every event.

Denise Collins was going to navigate for me in my first ever event but I guess wisely feigned illness at the last moment after a short test run. Jeremy Lake then stepped in as a Novice co driver which wasn’t really a good idea. Those who know Jeremy would be aware he was very quick in the early days as a driver. As a novice driver , having someone telling you to “ Go Faster “ then yawning at my attempts on your first event probably wasn’t clever. The car however was a great learning vehicle. A welded diff and grunt certainly educates the driver very quickly. Couple this with second hand tyres and we were away and able to run in the top ten at SARC level.....which of course was still about 15 minutes away an event from the likes of Ordynski, Burns and Lowe. There were however some fantastic cars built and for pure spectacle made todays ARC cars look asthmatic. It is no wonder the classic cars are making such a resurgence.

Some of my favourites were Trevor March's Datsun 1600 with the 2.3 litre Datrally engine moved back 18 inches ( 450 mm for the youngsters) . The rear weber carby used to practically circumcise the co driver at full noise. There was of course Barry Lowes Dazda, a ground breaking car, George Furys fire breathing Datsun 120Y built by Jamie Drummond, and of course Murray Cootes equally awesome Datsun 1200 coupe.. with the mid mount Datrally engine. These cars could take it right up to the factory BDA escorts .. and win.

It was an era of engineering freedom which of course conflicted with the CAMS “idealogy”. It was difficult to get manufacturers into the sport and the associated perks for those involved when a hybrid vehicle could beat the works teams , so CAMS in their wisdom banned group G and the cost of rallying went through the roof. The manufactures eventually left when they finished exploiting the sport and the average competitor was left dreaming of how good things used to be.... and they were very good. Fields went from full capacity and a waiting list to a dismal dribble for sterile events full of political correctness .

On the world stage, the engineering freedoms were also apparent in the form of Group B which was introduced by the FIA in 1982. Group B had few restrictions on technology and design. The number of cars required for homologation to compete was 200. Weight was kept as low as possible, high-tech materials were permitted, and there were no restrictions on turbo or supercharger boost which turned out to mean great power. The category was aimed at car manufacturers by promising outright competition victories and the subsequent publicity opportunities without the need for an existing production model. It gave birth to such classic cars like the Lancia 037, Quattro, Peugot 205 T16, Opel Manta , Metro 6R4 and of course the Ford RS200.

By 1986, the Quattro had evolved to the Quattro S2 sport and the Lancia had the Delta S4 with both a turbo and supercharger fitted., both capable of 0 to 100km/hr times of sub 3.0 seconds and putting out around 550 hp. Ford was a relative latecomer to Group B . The RS200 showed good potential . It had great handling and with dual shocks and springs on every wheel made it an ideal car for events like the Acropolis rally. It was however rated as underpowered with 450 hp from its 1.8 litre turbo BDT engine. It suffered from taking too long to develop . By the time it competed, the other vehicles had evolved further. Ford recognised this and proceeded to build an EVOLUTION version of the RS200. This was a much different prospect. With a new 2.1 litre engine developed by legendary F1 engine builder and a number of other mechanical changes, the RS200 EVO was set to lead the way.

Then...... they banned Group B after only 4 years since its inception. Group B gave rallying the most iconic and exciting years seen in the sport, much like Group G in Australia.

Ford were supposed to have built 200 RS200's. This was not the case. It was reported that the number was nearer 150. When the FIA came to inspect the vehicles in the aircraft hangers at Boreham, they showed them one hanger load of cars, took them to lunch, moved the cars to another hanger and let them recount the same ones. Upon the demise of Group B a lot of the original RS200's were sold off either to private rally teams, as you could still use them in National championships , or sold as detuned road cars having around 250 HP. Some were broken up for spare parts , They sold to the public for £50,000 which at the time was more expensive than a Ferrari.

However, just before the ban , Ford had also contracted to make up 20 Evolution cars and Ford made a further 4 themselves., so a total of 24 total were made with only 4 of these being RHD. A number of these went to and a very small number went into private collections. Today around 15 of them are accounted for globally in varying condition..

In 2008, I was getting fairly keen to get a group B vehicle. The favourites were the Lancia 037 and the RS200.. but it had to be an EVO. ( RS200E) I looked at a couple of Lancia 037's in Europe but the history was very chequered. Some of them were pacenote cars repainted in Martini colours and the price on them was soaring. Today you can expect to pay 350,000 Euro for a good 037. The RS200's were a cheaper option ...because they didn’t have the same driver history or results except maybe the odd one driven by Stig Blomquist. The RS200 Evo's of course never got a chance to race in the WRC .

So I set about looking for an RS200E. First stop was contacting the owners club in UK who we have a great alliance with now. It became apparent that the RS200 was the way to go. All the body panels were still available and most parts could be sourced. I travel a lot to UK for work and on one trip the club gave us a call and told me that one was about to go up for sale. It was an Evo, it had the factory paint job, it hadn’t been mucked around with and was original .. and it was RHD . I quickly travelled north to have a look at the car. It looked great. It was sitting under a cover with only 5000 miles on it . It hadn’t been run for a year or so . The bonus was, the owner was the registered agent by Ford for the RS200 servicing for Northern UK, so I did a deal. As I was returning to UK in another 3 weeks, I paid a deposit to get the car fully serviced and ready to go . Pending a good test drive , we would take the car.

I returned as planned and went straight up north to the car. It was in the workshop and we started it up. It sounded great ... not as good as our Perana , but hey,, for a 4 cylinder it was awesome. I was a passenger for the test drive as I couldn’t secure insurance , not being a UK resident. We travelled slowly up an English lane and the car bucked and clattered with a lot of noise. This was a car with a dog box, triple plate clutch and virtually no torque below 3000 rpm. I was thinking, it had better get better than this ... and it did. In second gear we went to overtake a slow moving vehicle and the car came to life. The car at the time had 17 x 10 inch rims on the front and 17 x11 on the rear with 335 tyres . It lit up all four wheels and absolutely rocketed down the road, into third and it chucked a flame out the back and launched forward at a prodigious rate.....I was sold.. and so was the car.

I organised a transfer of funds and then returned and took the ECU out of the car. This car was not to be driven again until it was in Oz. The engines on these really have to be warmed up . A replacement engine is around $100,000 so I didn’t want some clown with a car transport company having a test drive...... I would have !! The car was packed and shipped in a container and arrived safely in Adelaide

Once the car arrived , I set about getting it back to the original 1986 specification which fortunately consisted of a few bolt on bits . The wheels were the real hard part to get but that worked out OK. The car also came with an extensive spares package which was comforting. Being one of the last ones built, a number of spares were “ requisitioned” from Ford. So the only departure from the original delivered spec was a works lamp pod and the speedline rally wheels which I thought just had to be on the car. There is another RS200E in Melbourne but for some reason it has been modified with Motec, gutted the dash and various other mods.. I personally find this a terrible thing to do. I am pretty proud we have the original Motronic “Ford Rally “ computer. Sure Motec may make it faster and not such a pig to drive, but it’s a bit like putting a new Ford engine in a classic rare Shelby Mustang..... you just don’t do it.

The RS200E’s were delivered standard with around 515 hp. This gave them the world record for around 12 years as the quickest production car on the planet with a 0 – 100km/hr time of 3.02 seconds. It was eventually knocked off by the Bugatti Veyron. Our car had the Ford “ rally “ engine upgrade which saw it dealer delivered with 650 hp and accordingly faster acceleration. The delivered new price was £70,000 in 1986

The great thing about these cars is that the guys who developed, built and sold them are all alive and contactable. I have formed some friendships with mechanics who worked for 10 years at WRC level with Vatanen, Moutton and Rohrl. It makes getting set up information easy and their stories are stuff legends are made of.

I have kept all the original seats , trim and steering wheel so it can be taken back to delivered condition if need be, but as I intend to use the car in “ light” competition, the carpets were removed, new seats made up and a few reversible rally frills were undertaken. The car is road registered as a dedicated rally car which proved to be quite straight forward . After all, there were minimal modifications from the manufacturer. We retained the original UK registration. I figured having “ RS200” as a plate was a bit wanky .. having said that we do have a” Perana” plate......

We recently took the car down to Rally Tasmania for an initial shakedown. Being in the " Thoroughbred" section it meant that we could take things easy...... only if we had to of course ..

Pre event I took both Lyn Wilson and John Hadden ( the owner of IYK 000 works BDA escort) for a short run . They were fairly silent after the first run. We really needed a closed road to have a real crack.

So we started the event, kangaroo hopped out of the staging area and battled the car through the traffic to the start of the first stage. The car was an absolute pig to drive slowly. No power steering, poor turning circle, very noisy and hot. It had virtually no torque below 4000 rpm and with a triple plate clutch from 1986 , you need a left leg like Schwarzenegger . The turning circle is terrible and I was quite apprehensive as we had new pads fitted and not bedded, new unscrubbed tyres and no experience at speed in this thing. We sat there and watched the works BDA tear off from the line and we moved up to our start position. The first stage was " Fernglade" .' a twisty uphill section with the first corner about 150 metres away.

Normally in the Perana we would give it about 1/3rd throttle to ease it off the line and then pull second straight away to minimise wheelspin. As we were in a 4wd car I just gave it around 4000rpm and let it go. It lauched off the line and we quickly pulled second gear. This car was meant to do 0 to 100km/hh in 2.8 seconds. It was every bit of that and I slammed the unbedded brakes on for the first corner with the words " holy F$%K resounding over the intercom. When it came onto boost in 2nd gear the car translated sideways about a metre on the road as the 4 new tyres scrambled for grip on the tarmac. We made it to the end of the stage and I didn’t want to tell Lyn that I wasn’t listening to the notes. I was too busy crapping myself. This was the fastest car I had ever been in.

Perhaps the biggest challenge was the gearbox. It has a works X-trac in it and in the RS200's they are difficult to down change, mostly because I don’t know what I am doing and partially because of the low driving position and relatively high centre console I find it hard to get the gates right. Still, if I stuffed it up i would just stop and start again... which I did a number of times. Being 3 years since our last Tarmac event and using a dog box I was a bit rusty to say the least.

On the third stage it all starting coming together. The brakes had faded and come back again and the tyres were scrubbed in . The BDA launched off again in front of us and we lined up for our start. Things went well. The harder you drove this thing, the better it worked. It was like a rocket powered go cart. The acceleration in the higher gears was unbelievable for a 4 cylinder engine. The car blitzed all the way to 9000 rpm in top gear which was around 240 km/hr . The speed arriving into the corners was hard to judge because it all happened so quickly, but a few times I thought I was stuffed and it just turned in ...like a go cart. The tight corners ( 4 or less ) were a real handful and physically I needed a fair bit of upper body effort to get it round.... but who cared....this thing pulled harder than a bus load of schoolboys.

Within 6 km we had caught the BDA and just sat behind him effortlessly. The BDA had lowered gravel spec suspension so was rolling a bit. John was driving it very well, but with more than double the power, we just cruised behind waiting for a gap. The RS darted from left to right easily and as much as I had the desire to go deep into a corner and pass, I thought of how I would be tortured by the motorsport community f I clipped his car and sent two of the most iconic Fords spinning off the road. .. so we stayed put and settled for a smart arse look by pulling up next to at the finish control at the same time and receiving the wonderful compliment from the BDA driver of ... " You Bastard.. how long were you there ? “

Things were going well. A few teething problems were becoming evident , not unexpected as the car was 15 years old and hadn’t be run hard for many years. The engine could probably use a freshen up but that could wait for now. Then something happened which was very, very, bad.

Sitting just out of the control , I smelt fuel and looked to see the right hand fuel tank ( it has 2 of them) leaking fuel at a fair rate onto the ground. Given the hot turbo was about half a metre from this, the split second decision was made to get the hell out of there. The surrounding cars moved very quickly and we withdrew from the event and drove off back to Burnie. While the car was moving it was OK but the thought of sitting in a pool of fuel with fumes was not a good idea.

Back at the workshop, we phoned UK as it was early morning. The car had a 50 mm split along the seam of the tank and getting the tank out did not look easy . The Ex WRC guys then told us that split tanks were a common problem and really for rallying we should make up something else. They forgot to mention this of course previously.

When asked how easy it was to get the tank out , the laconic response came back over the phone in an very English accent .... “ I would rather have wasps shoved up my arse than change a tank on an RS200” . That pretty well retired us to the scotch bottle for the evening.

So it was a short lived event but a worthwhile one. We are fabricating some new tanks and hopefully will have the car circulating around and I can practice down changing the gears without crying every time.
