Polo de Bernabé Reader: Donald Reid © 2007 Corina Dueñas ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT CORINA DUEÑAS: De la douleur à l’ivresse: Visions of War and Resistance (Under the direction of Dominique Fisher) This dissertation explores the notion of gendered resistance acts and writing through close readings of the personal narratives of three French women who experienced life in France during the Second World War. The works of Claire Chevrillon (Code Name Christiane Clouet: A Woman in the French Resistance), Marguerite Duras (La Douleur), and Lucie Aubrac (Ils partiront dans l’ivresse) challenge traditional definitions of resistance, as well as the notion that war, resistance and the writing of such can be systematically categorized according to the male/female dichotomy. These authors depict the day-to-day struggle of ordinary people caught in war, their daily resistance, and their ordinary as well as extraordinary heroism. In doing so, they debunk the stereotypes of war, resistance and heroism that are based on traditional military models of masculinity. Their narratives offer a more comprehensive view of wartime France than was previously depicted by Charles de Gaulle and post-war historians, thereby adding to the present debate of what constitutes history and historiography.

In contrast to scholars who situate popular genres outside of political thinking, or conversely read the “messages” of popular and especially children’s literatures homogeneously as ideology, I argue that BD adventures, including Westerns, engaged openly and variously with contemporary geopolitical conflicts. Chapter 1 relates the early popularity of wilderness and desert stories in both the United States and France to shared histories and myths of territorial expansion, colonization, and settlement.

Tel Aviv University, 2005 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Virginia July, 2016 © 2016 Nir Avissar Abstract The aim of this dissertation is to provide a critical history of French reportage photography in the decades following the Second World War, beginning with the Liberation in 1944 and ending in May ’68. During the Trente Glorieuses, reportage photography became an integral part of the media, which operated as the central platform for engaging the public in political discourse. My research explores how, during this era of mass communication, the photographic medium participated in the nation’s political life in concrete historical circumstances. In the course of this investigation, I inspect both the material, thematic, and formal strategies photographers employed to produce images in different political contexts, and the publication history of their works (who published their images, in what format, and for what purposes). The dissertation thus examines the role reportage photography played in promoting political discourse in France by visually engaging the most critical historical processes the nation was undergoing: modernization, democratization, and decolonization. At the same time, it also analyzes the reciprocal impact that changing political climate had on reportage photography. Specifically, it provides an historical account of the multiple causes that effected during the 1960s the displacement of humanist photography by photojournalism as the medium’s prominent current.

    LE PRÉFET DE NANCY DEVANT L'ANNEXION DE LA MOSELLE Le préfet Jean Schmidt Quand les unités de la Wehrmacht parviennent place Stanislas le 18 juin 1940, venant de Saint-Mihiel et ayant franchi la Moselle en aval de Toul, elles trouvent à son poste le préfet Léon Bosney. L'Etat français met à la retraite en septembre cet homme de l'« ancien régime », mais dans la « zone interdite » définie par l'armistice à l'Est de Saint-Dizier, il ne peut envoyer de nouveau représentant. Il désigne donc comme préfet de Meurthe-et-Moselle un fonctionnaire présent sur place, le sous-préfet Jean Schmidt, qui s'est replié sur le chef-lieu pendant les opérations mili­ tairesCll. Celui-ci possède une personnalité affirmée. Né à Clermont en 1894, de souche alsacienne ou lorraine, il est passé à Saint Cyr dans la fameuse promotion La Croix du Drapeau. Blessé grièvement dans les combats du Grand Couronné et amputé d'une jambe, il est passé dans l'administra­ tion préfectorale où il a fait une carrière assez lente. S'il dispose mainte­ nant par l'effet des circonstances d'une large liberté d'action, il doit faire face à des difficultés exceptionnelles. Il a l'avantage de parler couram­ ment allemand et il cherche à développer ce qu'il appelle « des rapports utiles avec les autorités occupantes » : il est heureux de rendre compte que le maréchal von Witzleben (un antinazi, il l'ignore) l'a reçu à son quartier général et salué comme un « camarade soldat ». Doté de carac­ tère, marquant son autorité, il est bientôt noté comme « brillant, dyna­ mique (parfois se contente de solutions faciles) »(2).

    The 1941 Miners Strike in Northern France From a dispute over soap to armed resistance Steve Cushion In Northern France in 1941, while under German military occupation, 100,000 miners went on strike from the 27th May to the 9th June. This strike not only cost the German war machine half a million tonnes of coal, but also had long-term consequences for the development of the Resistance in the area. Starting from a dispute with their employers over working conditions, the reality of living under Nazi occupation soon gave the struggle a political dimension, convincing the miners that their social aspirations were inextricably linked to the outcome of the war, thereby preparing the ground for what was to arguably become the most active underground resistance movement in wartime France. In the process of organising and leading the miners' struggles during this period, the local leadership of the Communist Party also realised the untenable nature of their central party line and were well placed to respond to the German invasion of Russia that was to follow a few weeks later. The strike gives valuable insights into the process whereby workers in struggle under repressive regimes move from industrial action to the armed struggle and parallels miners' actions in the Ludlow and Harlan County strikes in the USA, the Asturian Miners in 1934 and the Bolivian miners in the 1950s.1 La Zone Interdite The German invasion of 1940 was not the first that the Nord - Pas-de-Calais, a border area, had suffered, as German soldiers had previously occupied it in 1870 - 71 during the Franco-Prussian War and again in the 1914 - 18 war.

I LA DIASPORA DUNKERQUOISE Les Dunkerquois ressentirent avec une intensité particulière la joie que répandit dans toute la France, le 6 juin 1944, l'annonce du débarquement des forces alliées en Normandie. C'est qu'à la dif- férence des gens dont le cadre de vie n'avait pas été touché par la guerre, les « enfants de Jean Bart » vivaient, les uns, dans le sinistre décor des ruines de la « ville martyre » et, les autres, en exil, dans l'attente de retrouver, sinon leur foyer — s'il était détruit — au moins la terre natale. Et le débarquement apportait l'espoir d'un retour à une vie normale. C'est en grand nombre que les Dunkerquois avaient quitté par vagues successives leur ville. Aux premiers mois de la guerre, et surtout au début de l'offensive allemande contre la Belgique, la Hollande et le Luxembourg (10 mai 1940), des habitants gagnèrent des lieux jugés moins exposés aux attaques ennemies que les ins- tallations portuaires, industrielles et militaires concentrées à Dunkerque. Ils trouvèrent refuge dans la campagne proche ou au loin, tels des cadres des maisons maritimes ayant obtenu un chan- gement de poste et des navigateurs trouvant à embarquer en d'autres ports du pays.
