The Intimacy of Distance: South Korean Cinema and the Conditions of Capitalist Individuation By Jisung Catherine Kim A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Media in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Kristen Whissel, Chair Professor Mark Sandberg Professor Elaine Kim Fall 2013 The Intimacy of Distance: South Korean Cinema and the Conditions of Capitalist Individuation © 2013 by Jisung Catherine Kim Abstract The Intimacy of Distance: South Korean Cinema and the Conditions of Capitalist Individuation by Jisung Catherine Kim Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Media University of California, Berkeley Professor Kristen Whissel, Chair In The Intimacy of Distance, I reconceive the historical experience of capitalism’s globalization through the vantage point of South Korean cinema. According to world leaders’ discursive construction of South Korea, South Korea is a site of “progress” that proves the superiority of the free market capitalist system for “developing” the so-called “Third World.” Challenging this contention, my dissertation demonstrates how recent South Korean cinema made between 1998 and the first decade of the twenty-first century rearticulates South Korea as a site of economic disaster, ongoing historical trauma and what I call impassible “transmodernity” (compulsory capitalist restructuring alongside, and in conflict with, deep-seated tradition). Made during the first years after the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the films under consideration here visualize the various dystopian social and economic changes attendant upon epidemic capitalist restructuring: social alienation, familial fragmentation, and widening economic division.

Discuss this article at Journaltalk: http://journaltalk.net/articles/5903 ECON JOURNAL WATCH 13(1) January 2016: 100–128 Liberalism in Korea Young Back Choi1 and Yong J. Yoon2 LINK TO ABSTRACT Liberalism in Korea came from the West, and all political outlooks some- times called ‘liberalism’ are present there. Some of those outlooks are more pater- nalistic or communitarian, and those are construed as compatible with some traditional political views in Korea. But classical liberalism, which, hereafter, is what we signify in using the term liberalism, is without antecedent in Korea before the turn of the 20th century.3 Today, liberals there are relatively small in number and are mostly, but not exclusively, economists. Yet they do seem to have attained a critical mass in recent years. The aim of the essay is to trace the evolution of liberalism in Korea. Before we discuss its recent development, we provide a brief historical discussion. Korea’s history illustrates the difficulties of liberalism in the face of totalitarian threats of all varieties. Pre-modern Korea (before 1850) The dominant political views in pre-modern Korea reflected monarchical absolutism and rigid social stratification. The last dynasty of Korea, Chosun (which spanned the years from 1392 to 1910), adopted Confucianism as the state ideology in order to combat the previous era’s rampant superstition and corruption. Since 206 BCE, Confucianism had been the ruling ideology of various dynasties in China, including the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). Acting in the name of Confucianism, the 1. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reappropriating Desires in Neoliberal Societies through KPop A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in Asian American Studies By Daisy Kim 2012 © Copyright by Daisy Kim 2012 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Reappropriating Desires in Neoliberal Societies through KPop By Daisy Kim Master of Arts in Asian American Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor Victor Bascara, Chair ABSTRACT: This project analyzes contemporary KPop as a commercial cultural production and as a business model that emerged as the South Korean state’s U.S-aligned neoliberal project, and its functions as an ideological, political, and economic apparatus to effectively affect the production and reproduction of desires in the emergence of various sub-cultures at disparate sites across the globe. Legacies of colonialism, neocolonialism, and (late) capitalist developments that sanctioned the conditions for this particular form of mass and popular culture, KPop as a commercial commodity is also a contesting subject of appropriation and reappropriation by those in power and those in the margins. By examining the institutionalized and systematic new media platforms and internet technologies which enables new forms of globalized interactions with mass culture in general and KPop in particular, the thesis locates how resistant and alternative (sub) cultures emerge in variable conditions. Through newly found mediums online, emerging cultural formations challenge and negotiate the conditions of commercial and dominant systems, to allow various and localized subaltern (secondary) cultural identities to decenter, disrupt, and instigate KPop and its neoliberal governance, to reorient and reappropriate itself in the process as well.
