4 Literary Letters, Manuscripts and Portraits collection. – 1784 – 1974. – 0.9 m of textual records and graphic materials.

Custodial history: The material has accumulated through the years through gifts and purchases. Information on provenance is available on request.

Scope and content: The Osborne Collection is home to a number of letters, manuscripts and portraits pertaining to literary figures of the 18th to the 20th centuries and the education of children. Letters range from single brief notes to correspondence over several years. Some have been tipped into copies of books. The collection contains manuscript material, including legal documents, a list of books from a 19th century school-room, and receipts for the sale of copyright. A collection of images including etchings, lithographs and photographs of literary figures, is also included.

The collection has been arranged by the archivist into three series:

Series One: Letters Dates of creation: 1784-1974

Physical description: 0.7 m of textual records

Scope and content: Series contains cards and letters written by literary figures important in the world of children’s literature. In two cases, Marshall Saunders and Charles Welsh, letters have been written to these authors. The letters range widely in length and significance but in most cases they illuminate something about the personality or career of the writer. Material sent as enclosures have been left with the letters. In a number of cases both writer and recipient are important figures ( to , to , to George Routledge, and others).

The series has been arranged by the archivist in an alphabetical sequence by author.

Lang, Leonora Mrs. Both- 10 letters, beginning shortly September 2, 2 Blanche, Hendriksen after Andrew Lang’s death, 1912 to October (Mrs. Andrew on folded sheets edged in 6, 1913 Lang) black, including one letter written on Mrs. Lang’s behalf by her housekeeper. The letters, to an American collector, concern a number of books that the collector is sending to Mrs. Lang as they are not present in her own collection. Linder, Leslie Mildred L. File of – letters, beginning 1956 – 1974 2 Batchelder, with a carbon copy of Ms. librarian Batchelder’s initial letter to Mr. Linder, one further copy of a letter to him and 22 letters from Linder. Also included is a photocopy of a letter from Linder to Susan Carr Hirshman of Macmillan. The correspondence with Ms. Batchelder began when she was Executive Secretary of the American Library Association. The final 2 letters in the file were written to her by Enid Linder, Leslie’s sister, after her brother’s death. Little Folks, Helena Letter to Miss Helena Gordon January 25, 2 editor Gordon from the editor of Little Folks 1886 (periodical), informing her that she had won the “Prize Story Competition”. The winner apparently won a bronze medal and ribbon, which is present with the letter, and a copy of Milton’s Paradise Lost.
