Individual plates from these collections (Topologia do Encontro, Acima/Abaixo, Insetos, Semente, Xingu: Lost Worlds, and Sob a Abódoboda: Under the Canopy) will be displayed and the artist will come to campus to speak at the opening of the exhibit and to teach a class to Connecticut College students. Nugent became interested in the Amazonian rainforest and its people in 1984 and has traveled repeatedly to South America where he has studied the natural history of the region.     Essays of Robert Louis Stevenson By Robert Louis Stevenson 1 PREFACE The text of the following essays is taken from the Thistle Edition of Stevenson's Works, published by Charles Scribner's Sons, in New York. I have refrained from selecting any of Stevenson's formal essays in literary criticism, and have chosen only those that, while ranking among his masterpieces in style, reveal his personality, character, opinions, philosophy, and faith. In the Introduction, I have endeavoured to be as brief as possible, merely giving a sketch of his life, and indicating some of the more notable sides of his literary achievement; pointing out also the literary school to which these Essays belong. Here at Honey & Wax, we get a lot of unsolicited book offers, some exciting, most less so, a few frankly deranged.     RANDOLPH CALDECOTT MEDAL COMMITTEE MANUAL June 2009 Randolph Caldecott Medal Committee Manual – Formatted August 2012 1 FOREWORD Randolph Caldecott The Caldecott Medal is named for Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886), a British illustrator best known for his nursery storybooks, including The Babes in the Wood, The Hey Diddle Diddle Picture Book, Sing a Song of Sixpence. Many of the scenes illustrated in these works depict the English Countryside and the people who lived there. Although Caldecott began sketching as a child, his parents saw no future for him in art and sent him to work at a bank in the city. He still found time to sketch, though, and in addition to the farmlands of his youth, Caldecott began to draw urban scenes and people, including caricatures of some bank customers. When his drawings were accepted for publication in the Illustrated London News and other papers, Caldecott quit his bank job to become a freelance illustrator. In his thirties, shortly after gaining recognition as a book illustrator, Caldecott began working with Edmund Evans, an engraver and printer who experimented with color. Together they created the nursery storybooks for which Caldecott became famous. It is believed by some that Caldecott’s illustrations were the reason many nursery stories became popular. Caldecott traveled to the United States in December, 1885, with his wife, but the stormy sea voyage to New York and long train ride to Florida sapped his already frail health. He died in February, 1886 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in St. Augustine, Florida. His gravesite is maintained by the Randolph Caldecott Society of North America.

    2. The Golden Age of Children's Literature “The Golden Age of Children’s Literature” refers to the last half of the nineteenth century, a period when the perception of children and childhood underwent a radical reconfiguration. The Augustan view, which focused on children who had to be instructed to grown-up social responsibility, gave way to the Romantic view—the remnants of which are still very much with us. The idea of childhood as a time of innocence, imagination, play, and pleasure was created in part by the Romantic poets, especially Wordsworth, who also associated children with the idea of an uncorrupted natural world. Part 1: Pictures of Innocence [2 weeks] In order to set the image of the Romantic innocent child, begin with Wordsworth’s “Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood” (1807), set in the context of pictures. Trace the descriptions of characteristics Wordsworth ascribes to the child in the visual depictions of children by Golden Age illustrations. Assign full texts (excerpts are available in NACL) from Kate Greenaway, Randolph Caldecott, and Walter Crane, possibly set against some eighteenth-century images of children (several appear throughout NACL). They had been Baxter apprentices and are here printing entirely from the wood (apart from letterpress features). Their business did not last long, being incorporated in 1850 into the firm of George Leighton, one of Evans's chief competitors.
