Asian countries are large producers of natural products and many of the products that we use today have their roots in the herbal traditional medicine. People are looking to save money, be environmentally conscious, use healthier and safer products. It goes without saying that the chemical antibacterial products are creating more resistant bacteria day by day, on the other hand herbal antioxidant agents have been proven to show less side effects. Therefore, it is logically and economically advised that countries, with enrich natural sources, start to formulate more natural products. The first studies on the therapeutic properties of the fruits and leaves extracts obtained from Diospyros wallichii King& Gamble in Malaysia are reported. In the present research the hexane, chloroform and ethanol extracts of Diospyros wallichii (fruits and leaves) are screened for antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. The study provides data to highlight the medicinal values of D. wallichii. Antibacterial activity was determined against Bacillus cereus ATCC10876, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC11632, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC10145 and Escherichia coli ATCC10536 using the disk diffusion method. Results show that the hexane extract of fruits was active against both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. -

Fraga ABSTRACT: We present an annotated catalogue of the vascular flora of the upper Santa Ana River watershed, in the southern San Bernardino Mountains, in southern California. The catalogue is based on a floristic study, undertaken from 2008 to 2010. Approximately 65 team days were spent in the field and over 5,000 collections were made over the course of the study. The study area is ca. 155 km2 in area (40,000 ac) and ranges in elevation from 1402 m to 3033 m. The study area is botanically diverse with more than 750 taxa documented, including 56 taxa of conservation concern and 81 non-native taxa. Vegetation and habitat types in the area include chaparral, evergreen oak forest and woodland, riparian forest, coniferous forest, montane meadow, and pebble plain habitats. -

Leaves Leaflet blades about 4.5-11 x 1.5-5.5 cm, with hairs on both the upper and lower surfaces. Leaflet stalk of the terminal leaflet much longer than those on the lateral leaflets. Midrib slightly raised on the upper surface of the leaflet blades. Terminal bud densely clothed in pale, +/- prostrate hairs. Female flowers. CC-BY J.L. Dowe Flowers Anthers usually red. Disk thick, 4-lobed. Stamens inserted between the lobes under the outer margin of the disk. Fruit Fruiting carpels about 6-8 x 5-6 mm. Hypocotyl hairy. First pair of leaves trifoliolate, margins ciliate, lateral leaflets shorter than the middle leaflet. At the tenth leaf stage: leaves compound with three, five or seven leaflets. Margin serrate, crenate or smooth, both the upper and lower surfaces hairy. Terminal buds and stem clothed in golden hairs. Seed germination time 130 to 312 days. -
