A group of adolescent girls, all of them roller hockey players, confront their day-to-day challenges through the sport. Their team may lose on ADOLESCENCEthe court, but· ANGER will be winners in life.· PAIN · STRUGGLE “Roller Girls” is a series that addresses the subject of female adoles- cence in an honest way, with the occasional daring touch. It directly and unapologetically deals with topics such as monthly periods, friend- CONCEPT ship, toxic relationships, same-gender sex, teenage pregnancy, misun- derstandings, frustrations, dreams, struggles and pain. This sport, and the club to which the girls belong, are elements that link them and serve as the setting for the different stories that play out. Youth, and young people’s view of life, has its effect on everyone, including adults, parents and coaches. The action unfolds in a small- town environment where our protagonists must struggle to shape their own identity, setting aside rumors and expectations. Music and the social networks play a significant role in each episode. They are an integral part of the characters’ lives, adding an innovative and inclusive edge to the series. With its realistic tone, the conflicts that arise are treated as they would be in everyday life: straightforward, alive, filled with emotion and truth. Following Polseres Vermelles (Red Band Society) and Merlí (Merlin), TV3- Televisió de Catalunya now takes on a very female-focused and emotionally-charged subject with the force associated with large pro- ductions. CHARACTERS 25 years old ANNA RICOU Anna is Emma’s sister and the team coach. She is polite and can gracefully handle any so- cial situation with which she’s faced. Having trained as a hockey player for so many years, he has a bit of a complex about her strong and muscular body, so she’s always dated ath- letic types in order not to feel too “masculine” in their presence. Be that as it may, everyone in the town has always considered her the perfect girl. She was always head of the class, the best female hockey player and a friend to all. When she decided to go to Alcalá de Henares to do a Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Júlia Terrats arranged for her to be able to join the women’s hockey team there, and now she has a year of playing professional hockey under her belt. She’s feeling very lost and isn’t sure who she is or what she wants to do. Having returned home after 5 years, Anna and has told everyone that it’s because she’s been offered a job in a prestigious laboratory in the region. But in fact she has come back because she was removed from the team because of positive results on doping tests and after a few months could no longer continue living off of her savings. Once back in her home town, Anna feels like all of the ghosts of the past have found their way back into her life: the distant and strained relationship with her sister Emma; her de- pendence on her former coach and “sports mother” (Júlia Terrats); the unresolved sexual tension with Germán, and more. But, at the same time, facing the new challenge of coach- ing a girls’ hockey team has provided her with a goal and renewed her hopes and energy. When all is said and done, hockey is what has always kept her moving forward. 40 years old JÚLIA TERRATS Júlia Terrats is a tough, competitive woman and very dedicated to hockey. She coached the girl’s hockey team in its peak period, when Anna was one of its great players. She is like a member of Anna’s family, having been best friends with Santi since they first met through the Club as youngsters, and was the first to warmly welcome his partner Núria when she moved to the village out of love for Santi. Now she’s the coach of the senior men’s team that Oscar plays on, and which has been the subject of certain controversy: a woman coaching a first division male team? But nothing can stop her. Júlia wants to have a child. She feels like it’s time, and her biological clock is telling her that it’s now or never, but so far hasn’t had any success with In Vitro Fertilization. She doesn’t have a partner and has had to pay for the expensive IVF procedures herself, though they have all ended in miscarriages. The only ones who know anything about this are her niece Berta, Anna, and her best friend, Santi, who begins to get a little uncomfortable with all of this personal information. Finally, it is Anna who helps her see that maybe she isn’t really so interested in having a child after all, and that perhaps all she wants is to compete against herself or biology. Júlia decides to put her name forward as a candidate for Club president, in competition with Enric for the position. She promises the girls that if she wins, the women’s section will regain its strong standing. CHARACTERS BERTA 18 years old Berta is the goalie and the captain of the team. Though slightly on the chubby side, she has never felt ill at ease with her body; quite the con- trary. She wants to go into Medicine and so takes her secondary school studies very seriously, steadily getting good grades. She worries more about others than herself, and is generous, understanding and kind. The girls on the team consider her a special friend in whom they can confide, because she always listens and offers good advice. Nonetheless, she can sometimes be slightly controlling and pushy when they don’t want to share something with her. She lives with her mother and her aunt, Júlia Terrats. Her mother travels a lot for her work and spends extended periods of time away from home. As a result, the person she truly lives with is Júlia. She and her boyfriend, Lluc, have been together for seven months and have a good relationship, although people can’t quite understand what they are doing together; she is very responsible and he is a featherbrained ne’er-do-well. Berta finds out she’s pregnant. LORENA 17 years old Lorena lives for hockey. Like her brother Oscar, who plays on the senior boy’s team, the two of them have shared a passion for the sport since they were little. The family had nothing to do with that; they just went for it. Both of them also like climbing and head out to the mountains whenev- er they can. Lorena is an enthusiastic, open person with a great sense of humor. Her mother Silvia runs the bar at the sports pavilion. The two of them are very close and can talk about everything. Her father is called “Pela” and he and Silvia have been separated for years, but he shows up on the home front frequently, coming in and out when he feels like it; though he’s not a typical father, they love him as he is, and have a good relation- ship with him. But you can’t count on him when you need him, and they know that. Lorena doesn’t know what she wants to study, but she’s clear about leav- ing the village. She has always admired Anna and wants to follow in her footsteps and go to Alcalá de Henares.
