HILD 14: FILM AND HISTORY IN LATIN AMERICA Wednesday, 17:00-19:50, PCYNH 122 Professor Benjamin Cowan ([email protected]) Office Hours: Wednesday, 13:00-15:00 This class closely examines a series of films made in or about Latin America, in order to better understand the history of the region and the way that history has been imagined and interpreted. Students will watch films in class, respond to lecture material about the histories in question, and discuss readings in their section meetings each week. The class will prepare students to understand and respond to different types of sources, to write cogently about historical topics, and to research primary and secondary sources. Students will also gain an introductory understanding of certain basic themes and events within Latin America’s general history. REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING: 1. Readings and Discussion (45%): Students are expected to attend all class meetings. Students must come to each class having read the assigned material corresponding to that particular date and must be prepared to participate actively in discussion sections. Learning to read and respond to such material in a timely fashion is one of the objectives of this course; students who find it difficult to complete readings on time should feel free to visit me or their section instructor during office hours for additional assistance. All hard-copy readings will be available in the bookstore and on reserve at the library; electronic readings will be available by library e-reserve (denoted by “Reserves”) or via access to online publications. We will watch the primary films in class; optional films are available on reserve. -

Massood Marc Dolan THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK iii ABSTRACT Manifest Density: Decentering the Global Western Film by Michael D. Phillips Advisor: Jerry W. Carlson The Western is often seen as a uniquely American narrative form, one so deeply ingrained as to constitute a national myth. This perception persists despite its inherent shortcomings, among them its inapplicability to the many instances of filmmakers outside the United States appropriating the genre and thus undercutting this view of generic exceptionalism. -

A Collaborative Teaching Proposal to Understand the Novel Os Sertões In
2021-4161-AJE – 26 MAR 2021 1 Images and signs: a collaborative teaching proposal to 2 understand the novel Os Sertões in the Brazilian Sign 3 Language (LIBRAS) 4 5 6 This article reports a collaborative teaching experience of Portuguese for 7 the deaf through a dialogue on Os sertões, by Euclides da Cunha, between 8 deaf student, Libras / Portuguese translator / interpreter and the Portuguese 9 language teacher. The purpose of the proposal was to encourage the 10 creation of specific vocabulary in Libras. The teaching experience took 11 place using the Digital Dialogical Notebook tool. For now, aspects of fauna, 12 flora, hydrography and relief of the northeastern hinterland stand out from 13 Os sertões. For this, the iconographic, geographic, anthropological and 14 linguistic aspects of this pre-modernist novel were studied. After analyzing 15 these indicators, photographs and images were perceived, linking all these 16 factors to a visual literacy that allowed a greater understanding of the work. 17 Recordings and video editions were made with the search of historical 18 record of these creations. It was found that, due to the direct and indirect 19 interactions between the professionals (translator / interpreter and teacher) 20 and the native speaker of Libras, it was possible to create linguistic material 21 of great social and educational value, since the Deaf People do not have 22 access to most literary works written in Portuguese. 23 24 Keywords: Libras, Os Sertões, Collaborative Teaching 25 26 27 Introduction 28 29 The present work is an experience report of the stages of creation of 30 vocabulary/lexicon in the Brazilian Sign Language of the species of fauna and 31 flora and the relief of the sertão, reported in the novel Os Sertões, by Euclides 32 da Cunha.
