University of Sofia, Bulgaria (2001) POLITICAL MANDATES 2004 President of the Swiss Confederation 2003-2006 Minister of the Economy 1999-2002 Minister of Foreign Affairs In these capacities, Joseph Deiss accumulated a vast experience in international and multilateral affairs: He headed Switzerland’s accession campaign to the UN and chaired the UNECE Prepcom for the Johannesburg 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development to which he was Switzerland’s Head of Delegation. He was presidential Head of Delegation to the UN General Assembly, and ministerial Head of Delegation to the Human Rights Commission, the International Conference on Financing for Development in Monterrey, the Council of Europe, the OECD, the OSCE and the Stability Pact, as well as the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council. Joseph Deiss chaired the 2002 Ministerial Conference of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie. At the WTO, he headed the Swiss delegation in many Green Room negotiations, and was Chairman of the G10 Group.
