Even though I attempted to do some good to help the car run better, I wasn’t doing everything I should have been doing. I wasn’t really receiving the full benefits of the oil change. When I think of that old Rambler and its stubborn oil filter, I always think of the Sacrament of Confession or Reconciliation. As Catholics we be- lieve that we receive special graces by coming to Mass, receiving Holy Communion, or receiving the other Sacraments such as Confirmation, or Holy Matrimony. Thoughts for Today’s Readings

To the Point: The magi arrive in Bethlehem intent upon finding the “newborn king of the Jews” who has been revealed to them by the light of the star. Upon encountering him with his mother, Mary, they are not content to only fall down in worship; they also desire to offer something tangible to the child. From their treasures they present him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. In our own unique ways, we too have encountered the child of Bethlehem. We find him in the faces of those we hold dear, within the bread and wine of the Eucharist, and within our very hearts. In what ways might we respond, both in homage and through gifts, to the revelation of Christ within our midst?

Connecting the Gospel to Experience: While we find within the gospel and the epistle historical events in which Jews and Gentiles (signifying all the people of the world) are brought together by the light of Christ, we are still waiting for the fullness of Isaiah’s prophecy to take place in which the radiance of God’s peace will eradicate the darkness of violence, war, and blood- shed. As we wait for the fullness of God’s kingdom, we are invited to work for the peace and unity that God dreams for the world.

1. In all three of today’s readings we hear of different nations and different faiths coming together. How does your faith com- munity reach out to those of different religions and different nationalities?

2. It was challenging for the early church to navigate the inclusion of both Gentile and Jewish followers of Christ. In your own parish, what groups have difficulty interacting with each other? How might they enjoy greater unity?

3. The newborn king of the Jews is not found in the palace in Jerusalem but in a humble home in Bethlehem. How do you rec- ognize Jesus in the poor and the vulnerable?

4. Upon encountering Jesus, the magi respond by offering him gifts from amongst their “treasures.” What treasures (either material or spiritual) are you being called to place at the service of Christ?

After Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, the Holy Family was visited by three Magi from the east. They came to worship Christ and bring him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The Feast of the Epiphany is celebrated on the 12th Day of Christmas, January 6th, but in the United States it is moved to the Sunday between January 2nd-8th.

On Epiphany, it is traditional for families to bless their homes, remembering the hospitality of the Holy Family to the Wise Men and asking for protection and blessing on the home and all who enter.

The home blessing is done by writing on the door or door frame or a plaque with chalk the symbols 20+C+M+B+21. The 20 and 21 represent the current year. The + reminds us of the cross on which our Savior died. The C, M, and B stand for the traditional names of the Wise Men, Caspar, Mel- choir, and Balthasar, as well as an abbreviation for the Latin phrase “Christus mansionem bene- dicat” which means “Christ bless this house.” Writing on the door also brings to mind the Passover of the Jews during the final plague in Exodus, when the blood of the lamb protected the inhabit- ants within.

Supplies: Scripture for Epiphany (choose one): Chalk Isaiah 60:1-6 Bible Psalm 72 Ephesians 3:2-6 Matthew 2:1-12 Revelation 21:22-26

How to Bless Your Home • Make the Sign of the Cross

• Read an Epiphany Scripture passage

• Pray: “Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

• Chalk the door, door frame, or plaque with 20+C+M+B+21

• Pray the Our Father

• Make the Sign of the Cross
