With her are the mortal remains of her mother, who passed away in Berlin. Awaiting the bright and inquisitive girl are her father Ebbo, an eccentric scientist with a dubious interest in racial breeding; her aunt Milla, who flees reality through music and affairs; and other members of her aristocratic German family, who are clinging to their privileges in a world on the brink of disaster. Upon finding a wounded Estonian anarchist on the estate, the passionate, impulsive Oda fearlessly hides him and secretly nurses him back to health, aware that her deed could trigger a chain reaction of un - controllable violence. The Poll Diaries hauntingly evokes the end-of-days atmosphere of a doomed society at the crossroads of the German and Russian Empires in the early years of the 20th century. This year’s representative from Germany is Philip Koch with his new project The End of Childhood, which he describes as “a tale of guilt, told through the eyes of the innocent, until the boundaries finally blur.” Autumn, 1932. The eve of the Third Reich. In a village in upper Bavaria three children steal them- selves away from their boy scout squad to a lonely spot in the woods. One has a knife. Hans, Josef and Wolfi – all aged ten – press their hands together, in excitement, and become blood brothers, sealing their friendship forever. But after a long winter their world changes: Flags are replaced, as are their teacher, the mayor of the village and, shockingly: the boy scouts become forbidden by the new government. The blood brothers are forced to migrate to the “Deutsches Jungvolk”, the youngest branch of the Hitler Youth. Though Hans, originating from a liberal family, remains skeptical of the Nazis, his two friends fall for the activities and paradigms with which the Nazis begin to seduce the children: nice uniforms, songs at the camp fire, exciting games and sports. Slowly though, the three undergo the agonizing transformation from innocent children into over-committed Nazi-followers, racists and anti-Semites.

  • From Home Chronicle of a Vision
HOME FROM HOME CHRONICLE OF A VISION A FILM BY EDGAR REITZ Set in a dreary, unforgiving mid-19th century German village in Hunsrück, Home From Home captures the plight of hundreds of thousands of Europeans who emigrated to faraway South America to escape the famine, poverty and despotism that ruled at home. Their motto was: “Any fate is better than death”. Edgar Reitz’s film is a heart-wrenching drama and love story set against the backdrop of this forgotten tragedy. It encompasses a time of tribulation and illuminates the revolutionary and intellectual spirit present in the souls who are center of this tale. Jakob, our protagonist, tries to immerse himself in literature and learning, as the rest of his family toils to fend off starvation. He dreams about leaving his village, Schabbach, for a new life in Brazil and the freedom of the wild South American jungle. Jakob’s brother, Gustav, returns from military service and his appearance is destined to shatter Jakob’s world and his love for Henriette, as it symbolizes the necessary rift that will set into motion the unraveling of the regimented family structure. 2013 | Germany | 230 min | German w/English Subtitles | B&W | Historical Fiction CORINTH FILMS PRESENTS AN ERF EDGAR REITZ FILMPRODUCTION MUNICH IN CO-PRODUCTION WITH LES FILMS DU LOSANGE PARIS AND ARD DEGETO BR WDR ARTE WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF CENTRE NATIONAL DE CINEMA ET DE L’IMAGE ANIMEE ARTE FRANCE CINE+ STARRING JAN DIETER SCHNEIDER ANTONIA BILL MAXIMILIAN SCHEIDT MARITA BREUER RÜDIGER KRIESE PHILINE LEMBECK AND MÉLANIE FOUCHÉ PRODUCED BY CHRISTIAN REITZ CO-PRODUCED BY MARGARET MENEGOZ SCREENWRITERS EDGAR REITZ GERT HEIDENREICH CINEMATOGRAPHY GERNOT ROLL PRODUCTION DESIGN TONI GERG† HUCKY HORBERGER COSTUME DESIGN ESTHER AMUSER MAKE UP ARTIST NICOLE STOEWESAND SOUND DESIGNER MARC PARISOTTO PHILIPPE WELSH EDITOR UWE KLIMMECK ORIGINAL MUSIC BY MICHAEL RIESSLER DIRECTED BY EDGAR REITZ German filmmaker, author and producer, Edgar Reitz grew up in the Hunsrück region, studied German language and literature, journalism and dramatics in Munich.

FLM302: READING GERMAN FILM 3: CONTEMPORARY GERMAN CINEMA Course Outline, 2019-2020 Semester A 15 credits Course Organiser Dr Alasdair King [email protected] Arts 1: 2.08 Office hours: Wednesday 11-1 Timetable Screenings: Tuesday 10-12, Arts 1 G.34 Lectures: Tuesday 1-2, Bancroft G.07 Seminars: Thursday 2-3, Arts 2 3.17 Course Description This module will allow students to analyse various aspects of German film culture in the new millennium. It explores developments in recent German filmmaking in the context of the increasing globalisation of media industries and images and in the context of contemporary cinema’s relationship to other media forms. Stu- dents will explore the dynamics of recent German cinema, including its successes at major award ceremonies and at film festivals, its relationship to Hollywood and to other international cinemas, its distinct approach to questions of the audience, of auteurism and of production, and to transnational images, particularly con- cerning the emergence of Turkish-German filmmaking. Students will also address the representation of politics, terrorism, history, heritage and the national past, the engagement with issues of performance, gender and sexuality, the use of genre and popular commercial film styles, and the re-emergence of a ‘counter cinema’ in the work of the ‘Berlin School’ and after. Seminar work on current trends will allow students to work independently to research an individual case study of a chosen film and its significance to contemporary German cinema.
