Due acknowledgement must always be made of the use of any material contained in, or derived from, this thesis. i ii Systematic Conservation Planning in Thailand Daraporn Chairat Abstract Thailand supports a variety of tropical ecosystems and biodiversity. The country has approximately 12,050 species of plants, which account for 8% of estimated plant species found globally. However, the forest cover of Thailand is under threats: habitat degradation, illegal logging, shifting cultivation and human settlement are the main causes of the reduction in forest area. As a result, rates of biodiversity loss have been high for some decades. The most effective tool to conserve biodiversity is the designation of protected areas (PA). The effective and most scientifically robust approach for designing networks of reserve systems is systematic conservation planning, which is designed to identify conservation priorities on the basis of analysing spatial patterns in species distributions and associated threats. The designation of PAs of Thailand were initially based on expert consultations selecting the areas that are suitable for conserving forest resources, not systematically selected. Consequently, the PA management was based on individual management plans for each PA. The previous work has also identified that no previous attempt has been made to apply the principles and methods of systematic conservation planning. Additionally, tree species have been neglected in previous analyses of the coverage of PAs in Thailand. -

The medicinal uses, botany, chemical constituents and pharmacological activities are now reviewed. Various compounds are tabulated according to their classes their structures are given. Traditionally Canarium L. species have been used to treat a broad array of illnesses. Pharmacological actions for Canarium L. as discussed in this review include antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective and antitumor activity. One Ecosystem 2: e13708. https://doi.org/10.3897/oneeco.2.e13708 Abstract Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, the oldest forest reserve in Malaysia established in 1900, lies in the center of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city. Over time it has been reduced from 17.5 ha to 9.37 ha but still retains important biodiversity. Its lowland equatorial rain forest has never been logged and tall emergent species to 35 m tall and 124 cm diameter persist. Since 1900, 499 plant species (2 lycophytes, 25 ferns, 39 monocots and 433 dicots) have been recorded. This year-long survey refound 425 species, including the rare Tarenna rudis (Rubiaceae), a local endemic found only in Selangor state. The multi-layered structure of lowland dipterocarp forest (16 Diperocarpaceae species were recorded) is intact. However, with diminishing size, the edge effect is more pronounced with secondary forest species, from trees to herbs, becoming established. In 2009, declared as the KL Forest Eco Park, it is important for its biodiversity, history, accessibility to the public for recreation (forest walks), scientific study, education (natural history, bird-watching, etc), as well as serving as a green lung in the bustling city. -

The aqueous, methanol and acetone extracts at 12.5 μg/ml, 25 μg/ml and 50 μg/ml, were screened for their in vitro antioxidant activity using FRAP assay with reference to ascorbic acid. Phytoconstituent screening test was conducted using the standard reagents. All the leaf extracts from Canarium odontophyllum were found to exhibit dose-dependent antioxidant potential but acetone extract displayed the highest antioxidant capacity of 89.49 3.64μM FeSO4.7H2O, 181.46 5.54 μM FeSO4.7H2O and 355.26 16.62 μM FeSO4.7H2O at 12.5 μg/ml, 25 μg/ml and 50 μg/ml, respectively whereas aqueous extract has the lowest antioxidant power of 33.87 0.97 μM FeSO4.7H2O (12.5 μg/ml), 73.60 2.78 μM FeSO4.7H2O (25 μg/ml) and 140.29 0.28 μM FeSO4.7H2O (50 μg/ml). Methanol extract, on the other hand, exhibited moderate antioxidant activity which was significantly higher (p< 0.05) compared to aqueous extract but no significant difference to that of acetone extract. -

This once vast island of tropical rainforest, in the space of only 50 years, has been reduced to isolated remnants including those centred on the three nominated sites. The Leuser Ecosystem, including the Gunung Leuser National Park, is by far the largest and most significant forest remnant remaining in Sumatra. All three parks would undoubtedly have been important climatic refugia for species over evolutionary time and have now become critically important refugia for future evolutionary processes. Criterion (iii): The parks that comprise the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra are all located on the prominent main spine of the Bukit Barisan Mountains, known as the ‘Andes of Sumatra’. Outstanding scenic landscapes abound at all scales. The mountains of each site present prominent mountainous backdrops to the settled and developed lowlands of Sumatra. The combination of the spectacularly beautiful Lake Gunung Tujuh (the highest lake in southeast Asia), the magnificence of the giant Mount Kerinci volcano, numerous small volcanic, coastal and glacial lakes in natural forested settings, fumaroles belching smoke from forested mountains and numerous waterfalls and cave systems in lush rainforest settings, emphasise the outstanding beauty of the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra. -

All stems with a diameter at breast height (dbh) ≥ 5cm enumerated, identified and their height weremeasured. The mean stem density was 659 (stems ha-1), and a total of 45 families, 102 genera, 181 species, 3319 individuals were presented in the five 1-ha plot; this comprises 6.3% species, 19.2% genera and 42% families of the total tree taxa found in Peninsular Malaysia. Based on IVI, Vatica maingayi,Xanthophyllum affine,Vatica pauciflorawere the most dominant tree species. The families of Dipterocarpaceae, Polygalaceae,Guttiferae and Myrtaceae were among the most important families with high FIV. Based on dbh class, nearly 50% of the trees were distributed in the lower diameter class(5-15cm). According to heightlife-form categories, 53% of stems were belonged to small trees (7-15m). Pakadang**) *) Program Studi Farmasi Fakultas Farmasi Universitas Indonesia Timur Makassar **) Jurusan Farmasi Poltekkes Kemenkes RI Makassar Email : [email protected] ABSTRAK Telah dilakukan penelitian tentang Aktivitas Antibakteri dari Ekstrak Daun Kenari (Canarium indicum L.) terhadap Staphylococcus epidermidis dan Propionibacterium acnes dengan tujuan penelitian yaitu untuk mengetahui aktivitas antibakteri dari ekstrak daun kenari (Canarium indicum L.) terhadap Staphylococcus epidermidis dan Propionibacterium acnes. Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode difusi agar menggunakan media Muller Hilton Agar. Klindamisin sebagai kontrol positif dan Na.CMC 1% sebagai kontrol negatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak daun Kenari (Canarium indicum L.) memiliki aktivitas antibakteri terhadap Staphylococcus epidermidis dan Propionibacterium acnes. Aktivitas antibakteri daun Kenari (Canarium indicum L.) dengan konsentrasi 2%, 4% dan 6% memberikan zona hambat masing-masing sebesar 19 mm, 19,64 mm, dan 23,44 mm terhadap Staphylococcus epidermidis. Aktivitas antibakteri daun Kenari (Canarium indicum L.) dengan konsentrasi 2%, 4% dan 6% memberikan zona hambat masing-masing sebesar 17,36 mm, 20,41 mm, dan 23,30 mm terhadap Propionibacterium acnes. CHEW, SAIFUDDIN SURAN AND ALI IBRAHIM Singapore Botanic Gardens, 1 Ouny Road, Singapore 259569 Abstract This vascular plant checklist of the Nature Reserves of Singapore is a compilation of historical records (herbarium specimens, published and unpublished checklists) as well as recent field observations and studies. A total of 1634 species of vascular plants have been recorded in the Nature Reserves since the last century, of which 443 (or 29% of the indigenous species) have not been seen during the last 10 years. Introduction The current Nature Reserves of Singapore consist of the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (BTNR) and the Central Catchment Nature Reserve (CCNR). Floristic inventory and research in the past were mostly concentrated at BTNR, the Bukit Timah Reserve as it was formerly known. It was one of the first Forest Reserves to be established in Singapore in 1883. In 1951, the Nature Reserves Ordinance was enacted and the Central Catchment Area, now known as the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, was included as one of the five Forest Reserves. In 1990, the newly gazetted National Parks Act established a National Parks Board, which acts as a trustee for the current Nature Reserves. , The objectives of the Nature Reserves are, as stated in Part II of the National Parks Act 1990: (a) the propagation, protection and preservation of the plants (flora) and animals (fauna) of Singapore; (b) the study, research and preservation of objects and places of aesthetic, historical or scientific interest; (c) the study, research and dissemination of knowledge in botany, · horticulture, biotechnology and natural and local history; 162 Card. -
