We, the community of Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women, are animated by the charism of Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy and by our motto: Via, Veritas et Vita (I am the Way, the Truth and the Life). The school, opened in 1928, remains a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Mercy.

We are a sixth through twelfth grade all women’s college preparatory school. We are guided by the values of our Catholic identity while respecting and welcoming students of diverse backgrounds.

We empower young women to unleash their potential through a vigorous pursuit of knowledge, service to others, a global perspective, and leadership opportunities. This pursuit is guided by a commitment to the virtues of hospitality, compassion, integrity, and respect for the inherent dignity of all.

Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women encourages students to be pioneers of change in the twenty-first century. Our mission is to provide an enriching balance of learning, serving, and loving that creates a community of care and sisterhood.

unior Melanie Pitcher ’19 will be the first to tell you, quite excitedly, that she loves being a Mercy Girl. Melanie Jalways felt like she was a part of the family – her mother, aunts, and cousin all called Mercy home. In fact, her desire to come to Mercy was so strong, Melanie transferred out of her previous school for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of Mercy’s first 6th grade class in 2012. It was a decision that changed her life.

Starting on her first day – and every day since – Melanie has experienced the welcoming culture at Mercy. Her confidence soared. Naturally athletic and effervescent, Melanie immersed herself in a multitude of sports and activities including volleyball, basketball, softball, and cheerleading. She was not fond of running, but joined the run club anyway thanks to the encouragement of her coach. The two of them ran Melanie’s first 5K together. During the run, Melanie shouted, “I’m doing this!” She sat on Student Council and participated in DECA, as well as represented Mercy at the HOBY Leadership Camp and the Teen Police Academy.

“None of what I’ve experience or accomplished would have happened if it wasn’t for the teachers and my friends at Mercy,” Melanie said. “Every day is a great day because I am part of this amazing sisterhood.”

he first moments of inspiration for Heather Hanson Goodbody ’87 were drawn from her parents – both thriving business people – who taught THeather at a young age that she could achieve anything she wanted out of life. Heather’s mom attended an all-girls school and experienced the life-long benefit of that environment. Wanting to give their daughter the same educational advantage, the family chose Mercy for Heather. It proved to be a great decision.

At Mercy, Heather pushed herself to excel in academics, clubs, and theatrical productions. She interacted with wonderfully forward-thinking teachers who echoed the inspirational beliefs of her parents. The diverse culture at Mercy served as a catalyst which solidified Heather’s confidence and drove her to be a better human being. It set the stage for Heather’s success as a Private Wealth Advisor at Merrill Lynch.

From her corner office, Heather looks back at her years in school and reflects on how the environment at Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women helped teach her how to be a stronger leader. She is thankful for the countless opportunities available to each and every student. “As Mercy Girls, we got to be the boss – in clubs, athletics, and so many other activities,” Heather said. “We were able to take charge and be in charge… making leaders out of all of us.
