As always, Some News from National.

July 30, 2019 -

Comment from EAA CEO and Chairman of the Board Jack J. Pelton:

 “What I’m most proud of this year is how our volunteers, staff, and the community joined to overcome the challenges resulting from the massive storms that hit the airport and campground just prior to opening day. It took a true team effort to meet the additional demands on time and resources to provide services to our members and visitors.”]

Attendance: Approximately 642,000 — 6.8 percent above 2018’s record total. Comment from Jack:

 “EAA members and aviation enthusiasts attended in large numbers, and stayed throughout the week. On July 22, we thanked Oshkosh residents for 50 years of support with free opening-day tickets, and more than 8,700 of them attended, which equates to 13 percent of the city’s population. Throughout the rest of the week, our efforts to create unique attractions and aviation highlights across the grounds were incredibly successful in creating only-in-Oshkosh moments.”

Total aircraft: More than 10,000 aircraft arrived at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh and other airports in east-central Wisconsin. At Wittman alone, there were 16,807 aircraft operations in the 11- day period from July 19-29,which is an average of approximately 127 takeoffs/landings per hour. Total showplanes: 2,758 including 1,057 homebuilt aircraft (including a record 592 homebuilt aircraft campsites), 939 vintage airplanes, 400 warbirds (6 percent increase), 188 ultralights and light-sport aircraft, 105 seaplanes (40 percent increase), 62 aerobatic aircraft, and 7 in other categories.

Camping: More than 12,300 sites in aircraft and drive-in camping accounted for an estimated 40,000 visitors.

Volunteers: More than 5,500 contributing in excess of 250,000 hours.

Guests registered at International Visitors Tent: A record 2,772 visitors registered from 93 nations, also a record total (actual counts are higher since international visitor registration is voluntary). Top countries represented by registered visitors: Canada (561 visitors), Australia (386), and South Africa (177).

The Gathering shines: The EAA Aviation Foundation’s annual event to support its aviation education programs attracted some 1,400 people and raised more than $2.8 million that will be focused on EAA’s mission of growing participation in aviation.

Media: 851 media representatives on-site, from six continents.

Economic impact*: $170 million for the five counties in the Oshkosh region (Winnebago, Outagamie, Fond du Lac, Calumet, and Brown). *Based on 2017 University of Wisconsin Oshkosh economic impact study.

What’s ahead for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2020 (July 20-26, 2020)? Comment from Jack:

 “Planning is well underway for next year’s event, including discussions during AirVenture 2019 about possible features and attractions for 2020. In the next few months, we will be finalizing highlights in all areas to make the 68th annual EAA fly-in convention the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration.”

A World War II B-25D Mitchell Bomber “Yankee Warrior” will take Air Show fans on a sentimental journey when it takes to the skies. The B-25 has a distinctive shape with a low rumbling engine and is a living, flying embodiment of the Greatest Generation’s winning spirit. The B-25 Mitchell was one of the

EAA Chapter 859 Steubenville, OH Hello everyone, I hope everyone is surviving the heat wave, hoping for a break in temp soon. On Aug 16 & 17 the chapter is going to hold a fund raising event in the chapter hanger. It’s going to be an old fashion garage sale. For starters St. Joesph’s Church in Weirton donated what they had left over from their big garage sale. (10) truck loads. Word has spread out to some chapter members which in turn have brought out some of their items to add to the ever growing items. Stuff like bench tools, a couple of computer exercise bikes, a nice treadmill, tons of glassware, baby toys, a couple nice pieces of furniture, two nice book shelf units, three golf club bags complete with clubs, and for you old guys lots of cassettes. Yes even some aircraft parts donated over the years. All are put on their own tables to make it easier to keep track of.

Now here is your chance to get rid of some of the stuff you have collecting dust or haven’t used in the last 5 years, now is your chance to get rid of it and for a good cause.

As this thing is growing, we have use up all the Chapter’s tables. If you would happen to have some tables we can sure use them, just mark your name on them.

Now if you never did a garage sale, it’s a lot of fun. You just sit back and collect the money. But in this case being around aviation, it’s a chance to inter act with the general public that most likely never seen or let alone to be around a small airport or with airplanes that they only seen from the ground looking up. Explaining about the airplanes that we fly and especially the VP-1 project, I am sure you’ll get some strange looks. This is your chance to have a little fun.

Thanks all.

rpm. Haven't stalled it yet. –Ron

Jeff Paden’s Titan T-51 Mustang

First flight was conducted by Bill Koleno on June 30 at Medina Airport. Jeff took a partially-completed project from Florida and rebuilt many components of the plane and replaced the engine with a larger engine. Walt Halloran painted the T-51 in the dark-green configuration of Bud Anderson’s Old Crow from World War II. This is Jeff’s third aircraft completion! Great job, Congratulations

EAA Chapter 234 was formed by a small group at Acme Skyport in 1965 with the primary interest in promoting aviation safety, education and fellowship.

There is a mix of activities by the Chapter. Usually a breakfast fly-in is hosted at Torchport Airport. The Chapter has also hosted Young Eagle events at NMC Aviation Department ramp. Of course, there is the annual Christmas party with all the coveted awards.

Bob Witkop has formed a notorious group of Saturday morning flyers that post a regular year round schedule of places to meet for breakfast. Appropriately named Bob’s Breakfast Bunch.

Meetings are normally held the second Thursday of each month @ 7PM either at the NMC Aviation building on Aeropark Drive or Giving Wings Hangar on Airport Access.

The Chapter always welcomes visitors at our meeting and social activities and hope they will consider joining our Chapter. EAA 5

Summer Camp - Based on the feedback from kids and parents, our summer camp experience for middle school students was about as successful as an event can get. First off, the level of planning and attention to detail by Sherry and Tim was unprecedented for a a chapter event. Big thanks also go out to the members who staffed the event all week and the instructors who gave each student their first hour of instruction. The masthead picture was taken by the drone operator that did a demo at the camp. EAA 5 First Fly-in of Summer - Once again we had great weather for this event! Fly-in traffic was a little light but we sold plenty of pancakes and gave 50 YE rides. The folks to young for YE rides got fly the Christian Eagle pedal plane while Sherry sold raffle tickets on the GB-R2 pedal plane that is now complete and on display. Remember that tickets are available at the airport from Ric, Tim, or Sherry. Again, BIG THANKS to those chapter members that worked to make this event happen. Summer Solstice fly-out - After several delays for different reasons, we finally got this event off about 4 days after the solstice but we still enjoyed hotdogs and ice cream at Meadville, and got back before dark. Six aircraft and a dozen members made the event.

B-17 Tour Stop - Save-the-dates - We will host the EAA B-17 the weekend of September 5-8 at Lost Nation Airport. Please schedule at least one day to assist with this event. Chapter members will have the opportunity to work with the B-17 crew to give rides and ground tours of the aircraft. 2018 Schedule August Business Meeting 12-Aug Program Meeting 18-Aug Ice Cream Social at Rob's VMC/IMC Meeting 22-Aug September Additional Activity 5/8-Sep B-17 Tour Stop @ LNN Business Meeting 9-Sep Program Meeting 21-Sep Last Fly-in of Summer October Business Meeting 14-Oct Program Meeting 21-Oct FAA safety meeting - Owner Maintenence - Steve Steele VMC/IMC Meeting 24-Oct November Business Meeting 11-Nov Program Meeting 18-Nov Annual Meeting December Program Meeting 07-Dec Xmas party Business Meeting 09-Dec

Darlene, Had a great time at Oshkosh with the grand kids, just have to share!

AirVenture Oshkosh 2019!

Here’s what happens when you turn a certified grandpa loose at Oshkosh with just the grand kids. We get to camp in a tent, stay up late and watch movies on a really big screen, live on junk food and pizza, even take a shower or two. Then we get to see lots and lots of cool airplanes and meet lots and lots of interesting people. From the people you are camped next to, to the people on the tram, the people in the various lines you wait in, to the presenters on stage at the forums, lectures, and signings. There are no dull people in aviation. We all have our own interesting and fascinating aviation stories….every one of us.

The kids especially loved KidVenture and flying the virtual F-22 Raptor in the authentic cockpit seat, controls, and stick. Then the virtual reality goggles make it exceptionally Real. My 11-year-old granddaughter rolled it very nicely three different times. Many thanks to the Air National Guard for the sponsorship and hostess Major Emily (?) who is a PIC of a KC-135 tanker. The B-25 full sized mock up was the next big hit. It requires a crew of four to “fly the mission”; one pilot, co-pilot, a nose gunner-bombardier, and a top turret gunner. Each has their own video screen to control and monitor the status of the mission. My 13-year-old grandson brought them all home safely and even did an excellent landing of a B-25. But there was also Gemini and Mercury space capsules to fly and rivets to rivet, radios to radio, ribs and propellers to build and lots and lots more.

Then on Plaza was the 787 Dreamliner, a B-29 named “Doc”, a B-17 “”, F-22 Raptor, and various other helicopters, jets and planes, but by now it was noisy. It was very noisy because planes were now flying the afternoon air show and a low flying F-35 on after-burners will vibrate you contact lenses loose. From P-51’s to the powered parachutes, they were all a thrill to watch. But one thing you do not want to miss is the night time air show with fireworks. The fireworks absolutely rivaled Boston’s on the Fourth of July, specially the Grand Finale of shooting sky rockets up through a large exploding ball of gasoline fire.

Unquestionably, there was no other place they would have rather been, including Disney World. Thanks, Oshkosh, for some really special time with some really special grandkids. Can’t wait to do it again.

See the pictures on the next page.

This is one of those feel good stories.

Chapter 907 Youth Workshop Work continues on the Hummel H5 project fuselage and fabricating small parts for the Stabilizer and Elevator. Lots of time has been spent forming the longerons around the cockpit to get the curve correct and still meet the firewall former. Fabricating of the Stabilizer spar was started but hit a snag as we had to remake one half of the main star due to an incorrect bend. We have all the parts ready now and will start to layout and drill for the rivets.

August 30, 2019 - Corks in the Concourse

Join us on August 30 from 7 to 10 p.m. for our annual fundraiser Corks in the Concourse. For this year's theme we will be turning the museum into a tropical island, so grab your floral shirt and sunglasses and come on down! Held the Friday night before the Cleveland National Air Show, it's a great way to kick off the holiday weekend. The event will feature eight different wineries including Grand River, South River, Debonne, Cherry Road, Firelands, and more, as well as lots of food, a silent auction and raffle, appearances by air show performers, and music by DJ Tony Slim.

Tickets will be $65 for non-members and $60 for members, and include a wine glass and wine samples. A "designated driver" ticket is available for $45, but does not include the wine glass and samples. Tickets may be purchased by calling the office or buying through the webstore. We are currently looking for donations for the silent auction, so please call the office if you have anything to donate. This is the museum's biggest fundraiser of the year, and allows us to keep our educational and community outreach programs going. We appreciate your support.

Themed dress encouraged but not required.

September 28, 2019 - Into the Breeches

IWASM is partnering with the Cleveland Play House for a special night of the production "Into The Breeches," by George Brant, at the Allen Theater.

Tickets will be $30, for the September 28, 2019, 7:30 p.m. performance, with a portion going directly to IWASM.

"We Can Do It!" So said Rosie the Riveter, and so say the women of Cleveland, Ohio, in this vibrant new comedy! It's 1942, and the leading men of the Oberon Play House are fighting overseas. With "The Show Must Go On!" as their battle cry, a band of passionate, yet inexperienced, performers rally together to produce the Oberon's season opener, an all-female version of Shakespeare's ambitious Henry IV and Henry V. Will their production be a victory on the home front or a target for rotten tomatoes? A hilarious and moving story about what happens when we're all in it together.

 HELLO GOODFOLKS!! Strap on a leather helmet and goggles and relive the past. The 1920s-30s were the golden age of aviation and barnstormer pilots traveled the country and introduced the masses to the skies above. Goodfolk & O'Tymes Biplane Rides is your opportunity to experience that unique feeling from the early years of aviation. We are the only commercial biplane ride company in the Dayton, Columbus, and Cincinnati area. This past year we were able to add another beautiful biplane to our fleet. We still have the most popular 1929 Travel Air 4000 that can carry up to two passengers, but including a 1930 D- 25 new Standard that can carry up to four passengers has really made Goodfolk and O'Tymes Biplane Rides on of the most popular barnstorming businesses East of the Mississippi. You can take your pick to ride in one or both of our beautiful biplanes. Both aircraft will give you a piece of history to take home with you.   Have you ever dreamed about flying like a bird? Well, experience that dream with Goodfolk & O'Tymes Biplane Rides. The low and slow flight characteristics of these flying machines will allow you to step back in time and enjoy the pleasures of flying like a bird. Let the wind blow through your hair and the smells from the countryside give you the magical feeling of the early barnstorming years. Whether this is something to mark off your bucket list, a unique idea for a romantic date, surprise your spouse for an anniversary present, a wedding proposal, birthday, Father's day, or just a joy ride, Goodfolk & O'Tymes Biplane Rides is here for that occasion. We are here to make some of the most memorable dreams come true.
