As always, Some News from National.

EAA AirVenture Safety Protocols Last updated May 10, 2021.

• EAA members now have the option to receive admissions credentials including wristbands in advance through our Express Arrival program. This is offered at no extra charge when you purchase your tickets online and eliminates the need to go to an admissions building. • Masks will be strongly recommended if you are unable to social distance (roughly 6 feet or 2 meters). • Proof of COVID vaccine will not be required to attend. • International visitation is dependent on current international travel regulations and mandates in the U.S. and individual countries of residence. • Increased physical distancing will be encouraged in all areas. • EAA is adding significant numbers of sanitizing facilities and working with industry-leading companies for continual disinfection throughout the grounds. • Theater in the Woods, forums pavilions, and other outdoor venues will operate with reduced seating capacity, with social distancing opportunities on the open grounds at that location. • There will be fewer exhibitors in each indoor exhibit building, creating more walkways and separation between exhibitors. Additional venues on the grounds are being re-purposed to accommodate indoor exhibitors that are moved this year. • Wherever possible, ventilation will be increased in tents and indoor facilities. • Several annual events where physical distancing is not possible will not be held this year, including the Monday night concert; the EAA Lifetime Member Dinner, International Visitors Dinner, and Young Eagles Volunteer Award Dinner; the Runway 5K run/walk; the WomenVenture social; the Seaplane Base's Watermelon social, and large corporate events and receptions. • High-demand forums and presentations will be scheduled more than once to accommodate demand while allowing for distancing.

We Value Your Feedback As always, we invite your ideas and input at [email protected]. We will see you on the Oshkosh flight line this summer!

One of the exasperating elements of COVID guidance for everyone, whether it pertains to a large public events or individual actions, is the continuing uncertainty and lack of specific dates for a return to normalcy. With that said, all guidelines are established for circumstances at the specific moment. As those circumstances evolve, so will the guidelines to reflect the current situation. We hope, naturally, that it will continue to be in a positive direction. That information will be updated as necessary at EAA.org/COVID.

Be sure to go to EAA.org for all the latest news. You will find news of the different air show performers that will be at Airventure 2021.

How are places such as shower buildings and restrooms being handled? Those areas are among the highest priority sites for our extra disinfecting procedures and will receive attention on a more frequent schedule, either by EAA personnel or contracted professional crews. Please be patient if you find those areas temporarily closed during the day for such cleaning, as the measures are taken for your safety.

VIRUS Alert: Know before you go. Before attending or traveling to any destination or event listed, be sure and email or call ahead to see if the event or destination is open and/or available. Be safe and healthy.

IAC Announces National Aerobatics Day

March 11, 2021 – The skill, beauty, and excitement of aerobatic flight will be celebrated on Saturday, June 26, during the inaugural National Aerobatics Day, as announced by Jim Bourke, President of the International Aerobatics Club (IAC).

"National Aerobatics Day is the perfect day to host an aerobatic camp, a BBQ, a practice session, or to share videos of aerobatic activity online," Bourke said. "With over 40 chapters nationwide and two international chapters, IAC members will be organizing these types of activities and others to engage the public and general aviation pilots in aerobatics."

IAC has established National Aerobatics Day as the fourth Saturday in June each year. It will highlight the dedicated pilots who fly these precision maneuvers as well as the ground support teams that make it possible.

Greg Principato, President and CEO of the National Aeronautic Association, enthusiastically stated: "Aerobatics thrill. They also inspire. And there is no telling to what heights that inspiration will take someone!" Originally developed as evasive maneuvers during World War I, aerobatics is a proven discipline that builds confidence and improves pilot proficiency. The loops, rolls, hammerheads, and lomcevaks are examples of precision flying at its finest, and most fun! "There are few things in life and nothing else in aviation that are as joyful and liberating as flying aerobatics," said John Cudahy, President of the International Council of Air Shows. "And the idea of devoting one day each year to celebrating aerobatics is brilliant."

The IAC exists to promote the safety and enjoyment of this great sport — what better way to celebrate than to set aside a special day to recognize the aerobatic community, and engage in sharing a passion that too few get to experience?

More information is available at IAC.org — including IAC chapters throughout the country and IAC contest and events calendars for aerobatic activity on June 26 and year-round!

2020 threw us all for a loop but THUNDER OVER will come roaring back this summer! We are excited to announce our first ever Drive-In Airshow! The event will feature a morning show and an afternoon show each day. And to add to the excitement we just received a commitment from one of America's Top Airshow Demo Teams, the USAF Thunderbirds! With four shows, there is an option for everyone. Choose between the USAF F35 Demo Team, USAF Thunderbirds (or both!), with a once in a lifetime event: World’s largest gathering of Mitchell B 25 Bombers.

Planning the Fun! Prepared for Your Safety. Although Willow Run Airport has an expansive amount of space, we are limiting the capacity to ensure you have a safe and incredible experience. Tickets for 2021 are sold as "Drive-In Car Passes." When purchasing, you can choose the morning or afternoon show in addition to the day (one pass required per show). Each Car Pass admits entry for all vehicle occupants and there are no additional parking or admission tickets to buy. Tickets are expected to sell out and will not be available for purchase at the gate. Buy in advance and make sure you do not miss out on Thunder Over Michigan! The new format will allow you to watch the show in a safe and responsible setting with even more conveniences! You will have the option to either stay inside your own vehicle or directly outside (passenger side only). The Air Show audio will be broadcast over a radio station giving everyone an up-close feel. You can learn more about all of the preparation we're taking in 2021 at Thunder Over Michigan ›

Things are starting to awaken from a long hibernation...

June Chapter Gathering - The June meeting, June 8, 7pm, will ditch the electronic venue for an outdoor gathering. We will fire up the grill, bring a little something to put on it. We will likely have outdoor chapter gatherings in July and August too.

Young Eagles Rally - Mark your calendar for Saturday, August 14th (time TBD). We are aiming to give 30 rides at this event. If you are a pilot and meet the requirements put forth by the EAA including the youth protection program (link here), please consider contacting Mark Powell, who serves as the chapter's Young Eagles coordinator, and pledging your availability. Also consider giving a youth a Young Eagle flight anytime the opportunity presents itself. The necessary materials, including the all-important waiver, are available in plastic file drawers in the clubhouse on State Street.

Pancake Breakfast - A variety of factors has led to the decision to reschedule the pancake breakfast for Sunday, October 3 which is a syrupy way to stack the date neatly between football Saturdays.

From the Light at the End of the Tunnel Category - Now that we are starting up a Saturday morning coffee and donuts routine, I like to see these morph into a mini-flyout to other EAA chapters as the opportunity arises.

KAZO When you visit the Air Zoo's aircraft collection, you are entering the land of giants.

You will see a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. Gaze up at an awesome F-18. You will get up close and personal with an overpowering F-14 Tomcat, the star of Top Gun. And you will stand face-to-face with the SR-71B Blackbird spy plane, still unmatched in speed and altitude.

Fly in and park right at the Air Zoo East Campus. Visit this Website: http://www.airzoo.org/

KIMS Historic Madison Indiana - Largest Historic District in Indiana, Madison, IN Madison, Indiana is a bustling, tightly knit community that is home to 12,083 est. people. We are known for our abundance of festivals and events throughout the year, as well as our historic downtown area that is filled with rich history and unique businesses and shops. While many communities boast of a historic downtown, our historic district is composed of 133 city blocks, which is one of the largest national historic landmark districts in the United States. Fly in and see what our beautiful town has to offer!

International Women's Air & Space Museum The team at the International Women’s Air & Space Museum has been working behind the scenes to revamp our programs and offerings, to ensure that we continue to inform, educate, and inspire. This process includes planning for all scenarios to eventually welcome people back for in-person events, and plan for our continued collections preservation projects. Beginning the week of March 15, the museum will reopen to visitors. We believe it is our responsibility to do so in a measured and responsible way. All visitors to the Burke Lakefront Airport are required at all times to wear masks that cover both their nose and mouth. If you do not have a mask, the museum has some for purchase both in the online, and at the instore gift shop. Hand sanitizing stations are regularly supplied and available throughout the building. The museum staff regularly disinfects high touch surfaces throughout the day, such as interactive exhibit elements. We are limiting the total number of individuals to enter the gift shop at any given time, and we are following all new information provided by the CDC and State of Ohio Department of Health. If you plan to visit the museum, please continue to self-monitor and if you feel ill, please stay home, and visit us at another time. At this time, the museum will not host in-person events. However, we welcome all to participate in our upcoming virtual programs.

For questions, please call 216.623.1111 or email us at [email protected].

Stay safe. Stay healthy. Mask up. We are in this together! If you are in need of a mask, we are selling some! With a big thanks to museum advisor, Teresa, we have three different patterns to choose from. Pictured is our Rosie print. Hot air balloons and planes also available. Quantities are limited.

CVX This harbor town in NW lower Michigan is about as nice as they come! The airport staff is very welcoming, and the walk into town is less than a mile and flat. Once there you will find a sweet town nestled between Lake Michgan and Round Lake the harbor connected by a short channel. Nice shops in town with many good food options. Go across the drawbridge to the Weathervane restaurant for our favorite. You can walk out to Lake Michigan along the channel or in the park along Round Lake. This is second only to Mackinac Island for must-see flying destinations in Michigan, only this is closer and involves less walking.

Tucker’s 'Oracle Challenger III' arrives at Smithsonian

Airshow performer Sean D. Tucker carefully coaxed the iconic Oracle Challenger III biplane out of a truck and into a Smithsonian National Air and Space restoration hangar May 3 where it will be reassembled to act as a welcoming centerpiece when the "Thomas W. Haas We All Fly" general aviation exhibit opens in 2022.

The familiar red aircraft made its final journey in preparation for hanging inverted above guests entering the museum’s first GA-specific exhibit in more than 40 years.

Powered by a 400-horsepower Lycoming AEIO-540 engine and maneuvered with eight ailerons, the biplane with Tucker at the controls delighted scores of airshow spectators during countless snap rolls, half-Cubans, and hammerheads. “It’s the most sophisticated aerobatic airplane out there,” Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Aeronautics Curator Dorothy Cochrane told The Washington Post. “No other plane has eight ailerons that I’m aware of.” The aircraft will act as a beacon for other GA achievements in the facility’s new exhibit space.

The display will celebrate GA and highlight sport, private, business, humanitarian, and utility flight. Plans also call for a Cessna 180 flown around the world by Geraldine "Jerrie" Mock in 1964, the oldest Gates Learjet, and a Cirrus SR22. The exhibition will include engaging videos along with interactive technology that will “explore the valuable impact of general aviation on society and encourage the public to join in,” the facility announced.

Tucker’s airplane was originally announced as the exhibit centerpiece in 2019 with intentions for it to be on display in 2021, but the coronavirus pandemic and other factors delayed the grand entrance. Social distancing measures that eliminated airshows, along with an economic slowdown, severely curtailed Tucker’s livelihood in the midst of his preparations for a new multi-ship airshow routine. The financial pressure on Tucker and his team led to an offer from fellow aerobatic pilot, Skydance Media founder, film producer, and friend David Ellison, who purchased the biplane and donated it to the museum on Tucker’s behalf. “When you see those kids go into that National Mall during spring break, it is just like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ They’re so alive and vibrant and excited and in awe,” Tucker told the newspaper. “And to have that plane there welcoming them. … I am not just some guy who wants to talk about the past. I want to talk about the future.” Tucker has a soft spot in his heart for youth and cofounded the Bob Hoover Academy in his Salinas, California, hometown to provide opportunity for at-risk teens to explore science, technology, engineering, and math concepts through aviation.

Udvar-Hazy wing reopens; World War II aviation exhibit announced

Udvar-Hazy Center reopens

After months of inactivity, the Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, reopened on May 5, in time to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of Alan Shepard becoming the first American in space. The Freedom 7 capsule from that historic mission is on display along with a Blue Angels Boeing F–18. An X–wing prop from the film Star Wars: Episode IX—The Rise of Skywalker is in the restoration hangar being prepped for display in the Washington, D.C., facility in 2022.

Attendees are asked to practice social distancing when inside the building, and there is a limit to the number of visitors each day. Free, timed entry passes are required in advance. Face coverings for those over the age of 2 are also required, museum staff said. Though the museum store is open, other amenities including the restaurant, IMAX theater, observation tower, and flight simulators are closed as a safety precaution until further notice.

World War II aviation exhibition planned.

In February, a $10 million donation from the Kislak Family Foundation supported the creation of a new “World War II in the Air” exhibition. An additional $3 million donation from the Daniels Fund in honor of Bill Daniels will support construction of the gallery, which is scheduled to open in 2022. The World War II aviation exhibit will examine how the revolution in warfare “redefined the promise and peril of military aviation,” the museum announced. The exhibit will also explore the “dramatic changes to flight and culture that continue to reverberate through society today.” The exhibition will feature rare fighter aircraft such as the North American P–51D Mustang, the Eastern Aircraft (Grumman) FM–1 Wildcat, and the Messerschmitt Bf 109 G.

The renovation and expansion are part of the museum’s ongoing transformation of all its galleries at the flagship building in Washington, D.C. To date, more than 350 million people have visited the popular air and space exhibits. The museum effort began in 2018 and will feature the Nemesis air racer, the Turner RT– 14 Meteor, and other artifacts in the “Nation of Speed” exhibit.

Aviation is a fun, exciting, and thought-provoking subject, making the EAA Aviation Museum an ideal environment for learning, especially for youth. The museum’s collection is filled with exciting stories and key historical lessons.

EAA’s education team and staff of professional educators provide hands-on activities that are essential to introduce the basic fundamentals of flight for school groups of all ages. Merit, aerospace, and engineering badges can be earned by attending one of EAA’s education programs geared toward scout groups.

Family Flight Fest, Space Day, and Girls in Aviation Day all bring youth and families alike to the EAA Aviation Museum to participate in education programming focused on sharing the passion of flight to the next generation of aviators and enthusiasts.

Your ongoing support enables EAA to provide valuable and essential skills through its youth education programs. Thank you!

This newsletter goes out to all EAA Chapters in Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Michigan. It also goes to a lot of the FBO’s in those states also.

So, if you are planning to host an event and would like to get it out there, this is a place to do so.

If you are a Chapter that would like an article published in the Ohio Region Chapter Newsletter, please feel free to submit an article to me. Also, if you are a manager of an airport / FBO we would like your articles also. Tell us about an event that is going to take place at your airport, a great restaurant that is on the airfield for those pilots that like those $100 hamburgers.

A great place to visit that is close to the airport where you have a courtesy car or that they are willing to pick up visitors and take them to the location. If you are a local chapter and are willing to transport visitors of your airport to a local event that is great. Let us know and we can post it here. Afterall, EAA is known for its hospitality.

If someone from your Chapter has a plane, parts, or tools for sale we can include it here.

If you do not want to write an article and would like for me to visit your website / Facebook page and gather my own ‘intel’ for an article, let me know.

Be sure to let me know if you have a different person that will be sending articles or to receive the newsletter to distribute to your Chapter members.

Please share this with your aviator friends.

I will be starting a comment section so please send your comments as to what you would like to see from Chapters and FBO’s.

Thanks to all who sent me an article! Also, even if you do not have an event to talk about or an upcoming event to let us know about, a human-interest article with pics is also welcome. We love to hear about your members. Also please start thinking about the July1 newsletter. I would like the articles for it by June 19th. Send those articles or stories to me at [email protected]

Thanks again - Darlene Ford
