Received 18 January, 2017, Accepted 8 March, 2017 The two target cactus species in this study, Micranthocereus flaviflorus subsp. densiflorus (Buining and Brederoo) P.J.Braun and Esteves and Micranthocereus. polyanthus subsp. alvinii M. Machado and Hofacker, are endemic to the state of Bahia and have ornamental value. Therefore, this work proposed to establish M. flaviflorus in vitro, as well as to micropropagate both species. The temperature regimes 25°C and 30°C and the alternating temperatures of 15 to 25°C were tested for in vitro germination of M. flaviflorus seeds, which achieved higher germination rates at 25°C. Regarding nutrient media, the lower water potentials of MS and MS/2 media, when compared to agar, allowed the germination of M. flaviflorus seeds. Furthermore, the test of plant growth regulators for in vitro multiplication consisted of regulator concentrations in a factorial arrangement (2x4): Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) (0 and 1.34 μmol L-1) and Kinetin (KIN) (0, 6.74, 20.22 and 40.44 μmol L-1) in MS/2 media. -

With the aim of assessing the extent of geographical rarity of Mexican Cactaceae, we calculated the distribution size (area of occupancy) of 142 species from the Chihuahuan Desert. In addition, using 2 variables (number of localities and range size), we preliminarily assessed their conservation status using the current IUCN Red List criteria. The results showed enormous variation in the areas of occupancy, although from the biogeographic and conservation perspective the most exceptional group comprises the extremely narrow endemics (42 species), whose range is restricted to areas smaller than 10 km2. Our results reinforce the reputation of this plant family as exceptionally rare geographically. We suggest that geographical rarity of Cactaceae in the Chihuahuan Desert is a natural phenomenon; however, we propose that the range of several species has been infl uenced by human activities. Regarding the conservation status of the species, 75 of them are categorized as Least concern. The remaining 67 species (47.2%) fall in 1 of the 3 categories of threat (27 Vulnerable, 11 Endangered, and 29 Critically endangered). These fi gures confi rm the critical conservation status of Mexican Cactaceae. -

Read Full License Page 1/21 Abstract A mass micropropagation method was developed for Mammillaria vetula ssp. gracilis cv. Arizonica Snowcap, a cactus species with high ornamental value. A culture media based in MS medium (Murashige − 1 − 1 − 1 − 1 and Skoog, 1962) supplemented with 0.1 mg l NAA + 0.3 mg l KIN + 5.0 mg l GA3 + 30 g l sucrose (MSM-1), was developed specically for the establishment and multiplication of Mammillaria vetula cv. Snowcap offshoots, let us to produce a proliferation rate of 34.9 ± 5.9 new offshoots per explant. The non-rooted offshoots were rooted in MSM-2, consisting in MS salts supplemented with 0.1 mg l− 1 NAA + 0.3 mg l− 1 KIN plus 5 mg l− 1 ancymidol and a lower dose (10 g l− 1) of sucrose, with a rooting rate of 100%. The rate of acclimatization of the rooted offshoots was 100%. -

Congress conclusions _____________________________________________________________________________________ CONGRESS CONCLUSIONS The scientific programme addressed 8 themes and consisted of 13 plenary addresses 27 parallel sessions, of which 12 were organised symposia on special topics 136 talks 3 panel discussions Feedback from each session was provided, and these were divided into three main themes: Strategies and targets Conservation action Engaging with society Strategies and targets The Congress has provided an opportunity to gauge the success of the International Agenda and the GSPC in providing a framework for action by botanic gardens.The GSPC has provided a clear framework – all targets are being addressed. No matter how many targets botanic gardens are working on, they are making valuable contributions to the GSPC. 2010 has provided a clear goal and accelerated progress. For example, Target 1 has been particularly successful. However, the long-term sustainability of deliverables must also be considered. The enhanced dissemination and impact of the GSPC outcomes will depend on a closer collaboration between science, conservation and education practitioners within the botanic garden. As well as the GSPC, botanic gardens need to engage with other key global policies and strategies – such as the UNFCCC, Millennium Development Goals, World Heritage Convention and the Access and Benefit Sharing provisions of the CBD. We need to develop wider partnerships beyond the BG community. Botanic gardens need to continue sharing information and resources and develop informal and formal partnerships, promoting their successes and the benefits of working together.
