Riess in 1995 Copyright 1997 by The Regents of the University of California Since 1954 the Regional Oral History Office has been interviewing leading participants in or well-placed witnesses to major events in the development of Northern California, the West, and the Nation. Oral history is a method of collecting historical information through tape-recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge of historically significant events and a well- informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. The tape recording is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. The corrected manuscript is indexed, bound with photographs and illustrative materials, and placed in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and in other research collections for scholarly use. Because it is primary material, oral history is not intended to present the final, verified, or complete narrative of events. It is a spoken account, offered by the interviewee in response to questioning, and as such it is reflective, partisan, deeply involved, and irreplaceable. All uses of this manuscript are covered by a legal agreement between The Regents of the University of California and Evelyn Danzig Haas dated March 6, 1995. The manuscript is thereby made available for research purposes. While the squares have been in the network of relations with the political, social and religious structure of the soci- ety since the early days of history, today, they have been associated with the cars, speed and technology in the process formed with the modernization movement. In some squares, there are tramways, public transportation routes and stops, and there are also motor vehicles. The squares have turned into places where there is a continuous flow with fast traffic except for waiting at the bus stops and railway station. With this change, our needs also changed, and with the introduction of motor vehicles in our lives, the squares remained as neglected urban spaces in an effort to create a transportation network. The use of the squares belongs to the period in which people have habit of being together, but now squares use belongs to a period in which we are not together even if we are side by side. Within the scope of this study, nowadays, approaches and practices for the squares that is an urban space in the world have been investigated. According to the results of sections, the criteria for evaluat- ing the completeness of the city-square relationship in today’s conditions are set out in a table. -

More than a thousand festivals of international interest exist on the continent, and their creative concepts are also increasingly important. Only events with a program including unique elements of international interest can stand out from the crowd. In addition to the creative concept, determinant factors include accommodation options, accessibility, price level, and country/city image. The organizational background of these events is also important: programming, marketing, sponsorships, technological/technical and fi nancial divisions all play an important role in the international character of a festival. What is more, internationalism also needs to appear in the corporate structure. The authors address this topic not only through an analysis of international literature, but also through a case study based on an in- depth interview research performed with the management of the Sziget Festival. The aim of the study is to show music festival organisers and future festival organizers how to build and operate an international festival and enrich the relevant literature, creating a solid theoretical base. Marking the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt’s death, this new exhibition at Louvre Abu Dhabi is the largest showing to date in the Gulf Region of works by Dutch 17th-Century masters. This exhibition is the result of a remarkable collaboration of Louvre Abu Dhabi, The Leiden Collection, The Musée du Louvre and Agence France-Museums who have worked very closely to showcase this extraordinary assemblage of 95 paintings, drawings and objects. Also a rare opportunity to see 16 remarkable paintings by Rembrandt van Rijn, along with rare pieces by Johannes Vermeer, Jan Lievens or Carel Fabritius. Not familiar with The Dutch Golden Age? It was a brief period during the 17th century when the Dutch Republic, newly independent from the Spanish Crown, established itself as a world leader in trade, science and the arts, and was regarded as the most prosperous state in Europe. During this period, Rembrandt and Vermeer established themselves at the forefront of a new artistic movement characterized by a deep interest in humanity and daily life. This exhibition is drawn primarily from The Leiden Collection, one of the largest and most significant private collections of artworks from the Dutch Golden Age. -

Pitsudski, Tadeusz Kosciuszko, Janusz Korczak, Pope John Paul II, and Lech Walesa;other heroes discussed are Raoul Wallenberg, the 1956 Hungarian Freedom Fighters, and the Solidarity Workers. Teaching methods for the unit include lectureand discussion, a slide presentation on heroic sites, selected readings, poetry, group activities, and an essay accompanied by an oralpresentation on heroes in society and heroes in each individual's life. It argues from a social constructionist stance that the reading of these texts gives us insights about the prevailing norms and values related to death. It posits that the issue of death brings to the surface general cultural values as well. Its aim is to see how these norms and values have changed as the political and social structure changed in Hungary. The paper also analyses how obituaries are activities of social memory through the construction of biographies of the deceased.
