TVRFU Weekly Newsletter (2nd September 2020)

COLLEGE RUGBY College Rugby was at its best over the weekend with a total of 8 matches taking place around the region, and a lot of high scoring affairs taking place. In the U15s, I was fortunate to watch a good standard of rugby between Paeroa College and College White, with RDO Marcus Howie taking the whistle. The game started with a hiss and a roar, as Paeroa College’s superior size making a huge difference and shooting out to a quick 12-0 lead in not a lot of time. Hauraki Plains coach Herman must of given his boys a bit of a pep talk, as Hauraki Plains got themselves back into the match with a try to squeeze it up at 12-7. Unfortunately for them, this was the end of Hauraki Plains run as Paeroa College turned on the after burners and showed a lot of skill and crunching defence to run away with the match 74-7. Openside flanker Karl Smith and winger Quinn Hirama had strong games for Paeroa College. This will give them a lot of confidence going into their top of the table match this week against Area School. In other matches, College had a strong 41-12 win over Hauraki Plains College Black. College annihilated 76-12 and Mercury Bay Area School proved what a quality team they are, punishing Whangamata Area School 114-0 in a huge victory. The Hauraki Plains College 1st XV successfully defended the Graham Watton Trophy from 2019 beating Paeroa College 39-17 in a high quality game of 1st XV Rugby. Hauraki Plains College started out of the gates quickly with two quick tries to get a 12-0 lead, however Paeroa then gathered themselves and got back into the game with a try to themselves. Eventually, the more structured Hauraki Plains College 1st XV were the better team, running out to a comfortable win with strong physicality on defence and allusive attack. Openside flanker Connor Woolston & Second Five Anthony Makiha were outstanding for Hauraki Plains College 1st XV with high work rate around the pitch. In other results, Whangamata completed their strong round robin performance with a strong 54-7 win over Hauraki Plains College 2nd XV with Whangamata Area School loose forward Dominic Chaplin (pictured with ball in hand) having a huge defensive game and also running some great attacking lines. Finally, Mercury Bay Area School continued to hit their straps with a clinical 33-0 win over to secure them 4th spot and a Semi Finals berth. In the Girls 1st XV Competition, Mercury Bay Area School defeated Hauraki Plains College 37-14. RDO’S COACH OF THE WEEK This weeks RDO Coach of the Week goes to Hauraki Plains College 1st XV and Thames Valley U23s coach Daniel Mead. Dan has had a successful 2020 season, firstly attending the Level 3 High Performance coaching course in Hamilton back in March. The way his teams are structured and patterned shows the detail that goes into his coaching, and this was evident on Saturday when his team defeated Paeroa College 1st XV. I also had the pleasure of witnessing Dan’s attention to detail last night at the Thames Valley U23’s around the tackle/ breakdown, which he takes great pride in—he loves a bit of physicality. Dan also helped with the Thames Valley Women's Vixens earlier in the year and was influential in the great culture that the programme gained. Good luck for the rest of 2020 Dan. RDO’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK Anthony Makiha was at his very best on Saturday showing his skill, pace and power in a strong individual performance against Paeroa College. His ability to take the ball to the line and create space, as well as distributing was outstanding and it caused big headaches for opposites. His obvious touch exploits have helped him a long way in the skill department, but his work on defence should also be applauded as he and the backline stayed very connected as well as making a lot of dominant tackles. Anthony was a key member of the Thames Valley U16s in 2019 and was invited to attend the Chiefs U17 Development Camp where he was rated highly, and following this he was announced in the NZ U19s Touch Team. Well done Anthony on a strong performance. We look forward to watching you again this year. OTHER NEWS

Great to see 39 players at the first U23 Trial Training last night. There has been a lot of interest in this team, and it was great to see players making the effort to get down to the Paeroa Domain at 6.30pm.

There was a great standard of footy and high intensity, so get down tomorrow night & Sunday 1.00pm (trial game) to put your bid in for a representative jersey in 2o2o.
